What subjects do you cover in first year law in the US? I've read a couple of books (both written in the 1970s) about the first year experience at Harvard, and I think it's safe to say that it's a very different story in Australia. For one thing, at Harvard in the 1970s, property, contracts, torts and civil procedure formed part of the first year curriculum. Here you don't touch that stuff until second and third year, nor do we use the socratic method. First year covers basics- criminal law, constitutional law, legal methods, etc. I'm wondering if it's the same now in the US as it was 30 years ago, or if you guys have eased off on your first year students a little since then.
Nope, they haven't let up...we still cover torts, contracts, property, civil procedure, plus a writing and "lawyering skills" class and criminal law.
But the nice thing is, after that, we get to pick whatever classes we want as long as we meet the credit requirement :)

i have HARDCORE senioritis. im practically done my internship hours but i cant stop going since i still have a month left (we need 120 and i have i think 111 right now. i go at least 13 hours a week >:( ) i said i had a dr appt thursday so i could get out of going. i really DO, its just not going to take all day and its kind of after my internship would be over. oops. oh well, sometimes you just need the day.
when i wake up in the morning, i'm always like "damn, i want to stay in bed" but i can't skip classes since i missed stuff because of court. only 6 weeks left..
and then the guilt sets in because i don't want to get a real job, not one bit. my parents are going crazy over the idea of me dancing and i feel so bad, but it makes the most sense to me right now. its scary though, dancing was always supposed to be something i did while i was in school, and now it isn't in my plans at all to stop in the near future. i dont want to get a "real" job, i dont want to wake up early in the morning and answer to someone else and make less money than i'm used to. but then what was the point of school at all?
i always had some sort of plan, whether it was to teach, or for a while go to law school. but now neither of those things is even a thought in my head.

oh no, far from "eased off." ABA won't even allow you to work your first year. it's like their way to weed out the "weak" ones or something. who knows.

^^Law school sounds frightening!
So, I might actually get to take the grad seminar I wanted. I met with the prof today and I have to wait until all the grad students are squared away. I don't have the exact undergrad background they want, but she was impressed I had glutted myself on language classes, though more latin would help. Cross your fingers for me!
Also, I can't go anywhere this winter break. No traveling and dancing. I need to get some stupid math course out of the way, because the internet based one doesn't count. I either have to take it, or get the book and do it alone and pass the placement test. :( I'm already behind by 9 credits to graduate on time, so I need to get this DONE apparently.
January, month of algebra. And possibly Latin. Damn.

Yeah, second and third year were like that in the 1970s also.
The US is so different.

Who or what is ABA? Sorry, I'm Australian, I don't know this stuff.

It's full on (even here, where it's much more staggered than in the US, though all the same areas of law are covered over the duration of the course) but fun in its own way.
Mathematics is what frightens me.

The American Bar Association. After law school you take the bar exam and that determines whether you'll be a lawyer or not (in the given state you take it in.)
I'm really proud of the women I've messaged on here and vice versa who manage to do law school while stripping. Honestly, that's a real ballsy move. I've been thinking about doing it myself, but I'm FREAKED OUT about any professors finding out.
Anyway, so is anyone else prepping their papers for finals now? Am I the only nerd alert who is doing this?

I feel for you. I HATE math. my mom thinks I'm an idiot savant, though. my stats mid term took me 5 hours. I ACTUALLY CRIED in the middle of it. I figured I'd bombed it, because 5 hours is a long time to have to take an exam and the fact I cried in the middle of it was a dead ringer that I sucked. I landed up with a 95% on it, though. blew my mind, because I didn't know anything I was doing.
hopefully, like me, you just think you sucked, but really you land up doing eally well! I'll send good vibes your way! when do you get your test back?

Do you have to take a lot of math with law? One of my friends is taking all sorts of logic and ethics and it frightens me. :D

Nope, I haven't touched maths since year 10 or 11 in high school.

Ah. Here after you finish the law course you do a year of what's called articles before you can be admitted as a lawyer. Basically you work as a lawyer's apprentice and get practical training.
What is on the bar exam?
I'm in the middle of my end-of-year exams at the moment, though I've just completed two of them. I have another on the 19th.

I'm still waiting on the decision for the seminar I want to take (I have to wait until all the grad students are scheduled), but otherwise I am all scheduled for next semester! No language classes. YAAAAAAY. 3 history classes, 1 stupid algebra, 2 art history. Hopefully I'll just test out of algebra. If I get into the seminar, obviosly I'll drop one of the classes. I don't want to take 7! I love planning future semesters. So much better than the actual class. :)

I'm so sad an disappointed at myself. I'm going to have to drop 2 classes this quarter. My managerial acct, and my calc class. I am beyond pissed off.

Well, my appeal to drop geography was denied (surprise, surprise::)) and they hadn't even received my doctor's note. Wtf? I told them in the letter I would bring it in as soon as possible, and I couldn't get it yesterday because I had a test. *le sigh* Looks like I will be reappealing. I'm really wondering if I should just start over somewhere else. Like Austin. Lots of hot chickees there....

Does your school have an Ombsbudsman office? They are usually mediators between the students and faculty. Talk with them. Hopefully they can offer you some insight. :)
