I would also add an observation that the popularity of classical concepts converted to children's story based 'fantasy' films has always been inversely related to people's contentment in real life ... thus the Wizard of Oz in the 1930's, Star Wars during the Carter Years, etc. However, the recent progression of children's story based 'fantasy' films i.e. LOTR, Narnia, Harry Potter etc. is unprecedented. The production of Golden Compass only serves to verify that the inverse relationship exists, and leads to the conclusion that people's contentment in real life is falling to historic lows as the number of these 'fantasy' films rises to historic highs.

The HBO mini-series of ASOIAF wil knock everything else out of the box.

I certainly hope so. At least it has some supposed basis in reality i.e. the War of the Roses and actual history of mideival Europe. Also, the plotline isn't limited to a reluctant hero winning an unwinnable battle against a corrupt establishment with the help of quirky but memorable 'allies' - as all of the other children's story lines are !
