Belladonna, the unique and popular porn performer whom I profiled earlier this year ("AVN Adult Entertainment Expo: Day 4), shocked fans last week when she blogged that she would no longer be performing. Her announcement came after she returned home from the set of a movie and discovered an enormous rash on her ass. Her doctor told her it was probably a herpes outbreak, but he'd test it to be sure. Belladonna knew she had herpes; she had contracted it five years ago while working in porn. For her, it was the tipping point: Until now, she had only experienced outbreaks on her labia, but what if the herpes spread to her ass, her mouth, and other parts of her body? On the one hand, she's not alone: Some insiders think that nearly every performer has herpes. But in another sense, she's all alone. Her post shined a light on one thing no one wants to talk about in porn: STDs.

Herpes risk and all, I would probably still hit it

I read that when she posted it on her mySpace. Most of the comments to her were positive and supportive except for a few ppl calling her a dirty whore and telling her she should die.

Why would anyone be suprised that herpes is so prevalant in the industry? 90% of the population is susceptible to oral herpes. The virus is contagious before sores are visible, and there is no way to protect against it. Condoms don't help because it doesn't always manifest itself on the shaft of the penis, right inside the labia, etc. I can strike anywhere relatively close to a mucous membrane.

No suprise there, just a risk you take. So she went back to porn?

Frankly, I don't see how any of us that are sexually active with multiple partners could avoid possible exposure; I hardly think herpes is the province of just pros and porn stars.

yeah, she's about as "retired" as Brett Favre. i'll believe it when she turns down "Planet of the Gapes vol 56". what kills me about the whole announcement is that she acts as if she is ignorant about porn's dirty little secret.

I actually heard it turned out not to be herpes, but moluscom (sp?) contagiosum, a different kind of skin rash.

Yes, 1/4 people have genital herpes.
It isn't surprising considering 80% of those 1/4 don't know they have it. So when people claim to be STD free they are probably not considering STD testing doesn't include herpes/hpv testing usually.

Still a contagious STD that lives in your body forever.
