Damn, where'd you hear that?
I got the December issue of Bust today, and they were interviewing some riot grrrrl fat-feminist/fat-positive/fat-pride girlies (not talking about the one on the cover but still) and there's all these blogs dedicated to that. I'm sorry. I'm about accepting who you are and being comfortable in your own skin, but to be so proud and in-your-face, and angry with "dumbasses who think you need to diet" is just a cop-out, a way to act like you have an identity, and not address the problem. And it IS a problem.
THANK YOU! The worst offender is that black woman Monique, I think her name is? With her "death to skinny people" bullshit. How does that make you any better than the "fat hate" you claim to be combating? I call BULLSHIT on that, hardcore!!!

What?!
Have you seriously thought about what you said? ;D
Life does work that way.
Countries can run however they see fit as a general rule of thumb.
Can you imagine how over run and run down NZ would be if they wernt allowed to choose who moved there? The whole of Britain would be moving over this side of the world and that would be the end of our countries!
Besides, Im pretty sure I couldnt just move to the US legally. Im assuming the US picks and chooses who it wants to come in, doesnt every country?
Health checks and the various other checks are in place as a way to ensure that people moveing to Australia and NZ will be good citizens and not drain our resorces and in turn the idea is that they will enjoy and benefit from living here too. There has to be a way to stem the flow of immagration, obviously AU & NZ have decided thats one way how they want to do it.
We like our health care systems for the most part (although NZs leaves a fair bit to be desired from what I could work out when I was there.) The last thing I think anyone would want would be the system/s you have in place in the US.
Whatever. If they don't want to take care of their public's health, they shouldn't provide public healthcare. You shouldn't be able to pick and choose your 'public'. Fuck that. LIFE DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY!!!!

I wish that were the case. We are now at record level immigration numbers (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/29/us/29immig.html?_r=1&oref=slogin) since the 1920's.
Besides, unhealthy overweight people is a huge strain on their own health and others lives. Sadly, people keep making money off of the unhealthy in the US. There is no acceptance of overweight people...there shouldn't be ever. We don't accept alcoholics or drug abusers in society. Acceptance in obesity is to accept to be unhealthy and die or do something about it.
Oh yea forgot to mention, that we are also giving out more Rx than ever. Its like skittles now.

This is insane.....I'm all for immigration control but this goes over the edge. ESP> since the chick isnt really fat. Shes overweight but it isnt like she is obese.
They are both clinically obese. Obesity is defined as more than 20% over ideal. I am 5'6" and 135. I'm at the top end of ideal for my height (140 is the max.) So, if I were 162 pounds, I'd be clinically obese (that would be a size 14-16).
Americans are so accustomed to seeing morbid obesity (100 pounds or more overweight) that someone who is just "clinically" obese is considered a little chunky.
As a side note, at least NZ allows immigration. The main problem in the US with all the undocumented immigrants is that it is roughly a 20 year wait (out of country) to become a US citizen.

Perhaps youre thinking of Morbidly Obese?
From http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=4607
>>
A person has traditionally been considered to be obese (http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=11760) if they are more than 20 percent over their ideal weight. That ideal weight must take into account the person's height, age, sex, and build.
Obesity has been more precisely defined by the National Institutes of Health (the NIH) as a BMI of 30 and above. (A BMI of 30 is about 30 pounds overweight.)<<
And from http://ww2.khou.com/Global/story.asp?S=2125612
>>
Obesity is a condition describing excess body weight in the form of fat. Morbid obesity is defined as being about 100 lbs. overweight or having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of around 40 or above. Obesity is associated with many illnesses and is directly related to increased mortality and lower life expectancy. <<
Sorry. That's what I get for not reading the responses before posting my own:-X.

to quote her doctor and laugh "He said not every overweight person is unhealthy or unfit." bwhahahahah i hope she snot so stupid to believe that too? ever seen a *healthy* mobidly obese person? ever seen a *fit* obese person? lol
as for why she was denied, i can get that. she failed a physical exam. im sure other people have failed for other reasons too before, she just happened to make a bit rightous deal cos she was denied on her weight. it she had some exotic deiseas, or had some form of handicap that prevented her from working and supporting herself, shed also be denied. weight shouldnt be any different. hasnt it been proven that obese people are a burden on ehalcare, and are unable to work as much due to health conditions?
whats a bit controdictory tho, is that nz allows thosands of samoans, and other pacific islanders in, and they are massivly big too, with loads of health problems, but i guess when they immigrate they dont have t get a visa 9same as going from nz to aussie for me)

THANK YOU for distinguishing that, Cameron.
Let's try that again: "He said not every overweight person is unhealthy or unfit."
Reading is fundamental, kids.

It was actually the HUSBAND's doctor who made that statement...which is kind of ridiculous actually, that he would say that to a man who was considered "extremely obese" with BMI of 42.
Yeah not all ''overweight people" are unhealthy slobs, but to make that statement to an extremely obese patient is akin to enabling IMO.

I think, as long as they are enforcing the rules across the board, that its perfectly reasonable. We're in a health care crisis in this country because of the obesity epidemic. One of the reasons it is implausible for us to have socialized medicine is because of the terrible health and lifestyles of our citizens.
It'd be a good idea to stay in shape now, because by the time most of us would be eligible for social security and medical benefits it will all be gone because of the people who are using it up now. The better health you are in the less help you'll need from the government.
It is truly a sad state of affairs, especially for those who have health problems that AREN'T of their own doing.
