I love this thread. I'm always fascinated by religions similar to Paganism/Wiccan. R is a Buddhist, and for now I'm just spiritual, but very interested in Wicca.

One of my customers was the person who gave me my very first tarot reading. It was amazing! The cards he had were originally his grandmothers. After meeting me he decided to actually give them a try! He had a gift...

Very good books to help you get familiar, and many people who have gatherings around the country.

I don't get involved with many others who are Wiccan, due to different beliefs. I don't do Goddess. Only God. And there are others out there who will believe what you may as well. It's good. The people are good. They LOVE nature, amoung others.

This thread makes me want to dig up all my old books. Other girls were reading Seventeen and Teen and I was reading books on different gods/goddess and rituals for the different moon phases. One of my moms good friends had a shitload of books that she gave to me. I wonder where they are...and my tarot cards :(.

The label I have come to accept for my path (tho' really it is so fluid it has no label) is

Solitary Eclectic Pagan Neo-Witchcraft

I've got a bit of Rosicrucianism, Wicca (as it was my foundation where I started), Shamanism in it. Also a bit Jungian as it appeals to my inner atheist. I pray to a God, Goddess and Great Spirit.

God and Goddess deals with us humans. Great Spirit deals with everything else. They are energy to me not actual beings. I see them as archetypes.. hence the Carl Jung (Jungian) influence in my beliefs.

Witchcraft as it is a lifestyle more than a belief system to me (the craft of the witch / the lifestyle of the witch). Neo-Witchcraft as I do not pretend anything of my beliefs are eons old. It's new hence "neo".

PAGANISM (including modern day paganism)
A category of religious and non-religious paths that are mostly earth-centered or nature-based including, but not restricted to, Witchcraft (Neo and Traditional), Wicca, Shamanism, Druidism, Asatru, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Goddess-worship, or any follower thereof. An unmbrella term for most nature based religions. Most (not all) forms of Pagan spirituality are modern (aka "Neo") and based upon ancient beliefs.

NEO-WITCHCRAFT (modern witchcraft)
A scientific and magickal way of life/style or craft.
It can be practiced by anyone and you need not belong to any coven or group and/or initiated to be a practionior of Neo-Witchcraft. A practionior of Neo-Witchcraft may incorporate other religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Satanism, Paganism, Wicca, etc.
- Scientific: a system based on hypotheses that can be tested under controlled conditions. In other words, Witchcraft involves experiments.
- Magickal: spells and any such magick is usually worked on an elemental level using the powers of fire, earth, air and water, power words and prayer. It can also involve the use of Folk Magick amongst other magickal systems.
- Life/style or Craft: something that is studied, and learned, and applied to use in life.

OLD WITCHCRAFT (traditional witchcraft)
Members of an Old Witchcraft coven take oaths and the knowledge within is kept to the coven and never allowed to be seen by the public and non-family. The coven, usually, is comprised of family members (including those who marry into the family). The type of Witchcraft practiced could be religious or craft (not religious). Old Witchcraft does still exist however is, usually, kept private or away from the public and non-family. Whether there exists an unbroken line of Old Witchcraft is disputable - be cautious around those who proclaim to be part of an ages old family coven.

WICCA
A religion which involves a belief in divinity (generally a dual divinity as in God/masculine and Goddess/feminine), Wiccan Rede and Law of Three. A modern religion based upon many systems of belief (including Old Witchcraft) and generally believed to have been popularised by Gerald Gardner (foremost), Charles Godfrey Leland, Dr. Margaret Murray, Doreen Valiente, Alex Sanders, Janet and Stewart Farrar and others. There are two branches within Wicca currently: Traditional and Liberal. Traditional Wicca is an Initiatory Mystical/Mystery religion (which can only be learned within a coven setting) whilst Liberal Wicca is generally practiced by those who are solitary and/or eclectic.

witchcraft (with a small w): the use of sorcery, magick or the occult arts. Unlike "Neo-Witchcraft", it is not a lifestyle choice.. just a practice (whether used frequently or not is irrelevant).

whatcha think of these definitions? I used to moderate and be heavily involved in an online magickal/pagan forum many years ago thus I researched and came to these definitions so newbies could be given them. To help them out. Ultimately it's undefinable however in order to communicate esp. online we need to define ourselves.

^^They're good definitions though I think the Wiccans might argue about only 2 branches of Wicca, unless they all started getting along when I wasn't looking.

This thread is amazing! I just got my first tarot deck about 3 months ago. It's a cheapy one from B. Dalton. I was a tad skeptical at first, but it has definetly forwarned me of many things, and also opened my eyes up a bit. I'm trying to get more spiritual It's just so hard sometimes with all the crazy things we all have going on in our lives. :D Also to add my great grandma practiced hoodoo (SP?) my dad knows some things also, but I think hes waiting to really show me when I'm ready, and have my spirituality in line. anyhoo this threads amazing, you ladies always amaze me!;D

No, it is in the same vein as in Christianity and most other 'religions'

There is the traditional/conservative side which for Wicca involves learning within a coven setting and then there is the more liberal side which for Wicca involves solitary and eclectic practice/beliefs... and those are the two extremes with people (just like Christianity and most other religions) fitting somewhere in between...

Or so has been my observation over the many many years since I actively became Pagan in one variety or another back in Litha (Southern Hemisphere) 1995.

I do and so does my family. All except for the 2 atheists in our family. What my family practices and has tried to push me towards isn't exactly my cup of tea (Wicca). So I practice another form most don't have a nice opinion about, but it suits me.

im quite good at tarot readings, if anyone ever wants one.

as far as spells i used to do them quite often, the big thing though is making a spell that is unique to you. you can just make them up, its all in the mental energy you put into it. you can use book spells as guidlines and put your own spin on them.

Well... there is an Idiot's Guide to Wicca... http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-Guide-Wicca-Witchcraft/dp/1592575331/ref=pd_cp_b_0?pf_rd_p=413864201&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0028639456&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0DBFHC6D3G1FE32GEG28

And there is a "For Dummies" version too... http://www.amazon.com/Wicca-Witchcraft-Dummies-Diane-Smith/dp/0764578340/ref=pd_sim_b_3

Personally, neither is really my cup of tea. I started out with this book http://www.amazon.com/Green-Witchcraft-Magic-Fairy-Craft/dp/1567186904/ref=pd_sim_b_1

And later purchased http://www.amazon.com/Stir-Magick-Cauldron-Casting-Conjuring/dp/1567184243/ref=pd_sim_b_26

Both these books are pretty heavy on the spiritual/religious aspects of Wicca. In retrospect, they are only OKAY. :-\

If you're more interested in spells (rather than finding a new religion) I highly recommend Supermarket Sorceress by Lexa Rosean.
It fucking works.
http://www.amazon.com/Supermarket-Sorceress-Spells-Enchantments-Ingredients/dp/0312957688

and I happen to have this book too... it's thorough but a little more complicated. http://www.amazon.com/Element-Encyclopedia-5000-Spells-Reference/dp/0007164653/ref=pd_sim_b_72

Oh. First thing you must learn is the difference between Wicca and Witchcraft.

Whilst the majority of Wiccans will practice witchcraft .. not all Witches are wiccan.

I'm a witch. I'm NOT Wiccan. You don't 'have' to be Wiccan to be a witch.

You can be of any creed (religious tradition) and be a witch.

witchcraft is the "craft" of the witch which translates into the "lifestyle" of the witch. plus what i love about it (for me) is the fact that it also suits atheists ... as witchcraft and science can easily go hand in hand.

Wicca is also more religious. Plus you have to decide if you want to follow "traditional" Wicca or "Liberal" Wicca...

If traditional, you need to find yourself a well respected and established coven and work thru that coven's tradition. As traditional Wicca can only be learnt thru a 'coven' setting (as such).

If "liberal", usually books, websites and the like are ok. A lot of solitary eclectic Wiccans are liberal.

Start with www.witchvox.com and go from there!

You don't require books in this day and age...

^^^ if you use them a lot, you'l soon discover that the symbolism of the tarot card images will begin to make 'automatic connections'.

I have tried using many different tarot decks over the years, but far and away I have found that the IBIS tarot produces the most vivid symbolism and the most accurate readings ... for me at least.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/ibis/

The origin of this deck is supposedly linked to the Comte De St.Germain

That is a beautiful deck Mel!

This is my deck from 1978.

http://www.learntarot.com/gddesc.htm

It's the OTO/HOGD deck first used and created by the founder's wife. It is also said that Crowley had some influence with it's creation as well, but I am unsure when he was removed from the HOGD and when they came to be.

Indie pagan/chaos magick practitioner here.

I'd have to say a *great* beginners' book is True Magick, by Amber K.

It's reasonably non-denominational witchy stuff from the very simple on up.

I have been looking at wicca and witchcraft lately. I wanted to start somewhere with the uses of herbs for physical and spiritual well being. I stated reading the same book Sophia mentioned ( Green Witchcraft) and it seemed to talk a lot about the history of Wicca and some spells. I will definitely check out some of the web sites mentioned here. You ladies rock!!:D

Question: For anyone who has found their nitch between witchcraft and wiccan or both, do you feel that it has given you a sense of direction spiritually? I feel that there is something more powerful than anything I will ever be able to explain that is responsible for this crazy experiment we call life and I would like to find some connection. I think it could help settle my soul and help me grow as a person.

Oh hell yeah! I am ever so glad I found it (or it found me, depends on how you look at it ;) ) !!

It just works. Works on so many levels for me personally and always will whether I'm "active" with it or just "living it" because no matter WHAT I do in my life... I will always feel connected to my spirituality.

I don't always do spells these days as I have moved past that in a sense. Developed myself in that respect that I don't require the "dressings" of spells.. just the core basics.. and it always works ;)

What I also love about it is how (for me) I'm not stuck in a "tradition".. I morph, change and adapt as I morph, change and adapt in life.. learn my lessons... be grateful/thankful for all the blessings I have had, have that day and continue to have.. and everything.

It permeates every part of my life even when it isn't obvious to others.

It is my spiritual home.

I used to practise Traditional Craft, far removed from Wicca, for about...............10 years I guess. I was very very happy then I seem to remember. Last 2 years the cynic and sceptic in me has won out and Iv left the theatrics alone. I do very much beleive in the LOA though. Not sure if Im as much at peace though.....hmmmm....

I adore Crowleys tarot deck and will use that rarely as I just think its like dream interpretation with cardboard.

Cant say I believe in Ouija boards though, LOL. I do have one and its stunning!! But I dont believe ghosties make it move :)

My personal form of spirituality is a mix of Wicca, Voodoo, and eastern religions like Taoism and Buddhism. How's that for eclectic? Lol. I worship a Celtic, pagan pantheon, but use pagan gods/goddesses and lwa in rituals. I integrate meditation and such into my life as well. It's something that works for me, and I find myself at peace with it. That's what I look for in spirituality rather than dogma or "salvation."

I've been studying Green witchcraft, hoodoo, Voudou, Yoruba (Ifa), and the Kemetic path for a couple of years now, along with Buddhism.

I lean more towards the Kemetic path, and the green craft now. Honoring the ancestors and learning about African Traditional Religions works for me for the most part.

I'm jewish but am also 4th gen hermetic golden dawn. I stepped away from these teachings when i was younger but have recently come back to it. Its very strange to see it's suddenly on the internet in such numbers.

I still occasionally perform rituals but its not always been good to me (i have problems with getting into repetitive habits) so only if I really need to find some focus.

My parents are still practising and my siblings too. I look forward to teaching my own kids one day

The club is a great environment for Witches. We can do so much with a crowd in one night!! it's the perfect profession for a witch. not only can you enchant the custies, you can also sell tarot readings to them, or potions and other spell work for the dancers. I LOVE bringing my Rider Waite into the club..

at one place i was KNOWN for giving readings.. all the girls confided in me in private, i knew their secrets but I would NEVER tell, thats the quickest way of LOOSING respect as a tarot reader/counselor. The girls loved my readings and they always came back for more.

I also had customers who started coming in just for tarot readings. Its a great icebreaker and it passes the time so quickly whilst making 20$ a pop for a good 3-song reading.. that is, if the mgmt lets you get away with it. The thing is to be discreet, and to make sure that the customers really enjoy their time, and that you keep the other dancers happy too so no one complains. its a strip club for crissakes but some people want to bring their religion through the door and condemn things like witchery and cards as 'evil' or whatevs.

Ive been in clubs where they didn't allow it, and at other clubs, they LOVED it, it was a break from the norm, and it was so much fun. I just got back into dancing after being on a 2yr break, and im bringing my cards in tonight, because I love reading them at the club, and im looking for a good icebreaker and conversational tool, inbetween selling dances. I get over my shyness when i can displace it onto the cards and into my witchy mystique -

its like role playing except I AM A WITCH - been practicing since I was 13 and now i'm 32...and im about to publish a book on witchcraft that ive been working on for over a year now...but behind the scenes there's thousands of us witches in the club so watch who you cross..she just might be your worst nightmare and you'd never even know =^.^= meowww

I used to be very heavily into the ceremonial aspects of Wicca - observation of esabats and every holiday, as well as the recognition of herbal, astrological, and about seven other different correspondences for each day...and now I just don't have time!!!

I would like to get back into doing a little more work, but more than anything, I have become a kitchen-witch. I don't feel the need for ceremonies and specific "sacred" items - I feel that they are very useful tools to help you direct your energy and mental focus, but after you have learned to do this, you do not necessarily need them any more. I do feel that I have got out of the habit, but in the same way that I have got out of the habit of going to the gym...its a time thing.

In my mind I am very much a pagan, and I love the idea of "councillism" as brought up here - that is basically how I feel..I have faith in all pantheons, although the Egyptian is my main focus. To me, spell work is a direction of energy, as is prayer, and positive thinking. Being "in-tune" with nature is about being fully present....I pray, I do kitchen works, and I control my mind and energy appropriately, but I find labels so limiting these days.

Sometimes I wonder if I am a witch, or a follower of quantum physics!!!

I was drawn to Wicca at a very early age. I was brought up a Bapist-Christian, but I never really connected with it. I do have visions, feel things, can see auras, and that kind of thing. I think I get it from my Great-grandma because she and I were really close and I just felt a peace with her.

I do have a tarot deck, but I haven't used it lately. I also have a Quija board, but I have never used it.

I have several Wicca books that I like and I always, always feel at home in a metaphysical store. it just feels right to me.

Wiccan interested at an early age too.
I'd often try spells out, but they didn't really seem to work.
Probably cos I was young back then and didn't do it right.

About to do a psychic course soon, to brush up on my intuition and how to better read cards in fortune tellings etc.. I'm kinda excited.

I love learning about these things. You can call me a spiritualist.

I started out practicing as a solitary Wiccan, but have been doing some research into Green Witchcraft and elements of the Celtic pagan practices.
I agree that the club can be a good atmosphere for a Goddess-worshipper. I know this probably sounds kind of corny, but I on the nights when I can remind myself that my sexuality is sacred and beautiful (and express that on stage), I do really well.

I suppose that I'd call myself a practitioner, I don't really agree with a lot of Wiccan ideals... The people that I practice with don't really subscribe to the concept of karma, so yeah, we do do a fair amount of cursing and necromancy as well as the "lighter" stuff. Very much a concept that you're only bound by your own guilt, and by ridding oneself of guilt, you don't incur the wroth of karma.

I come from a family tradition (think hundreds of years) of necromancy and clairvoyance, so it's something that has been passed down from generation to generation. It's pretty cool stuff!

So yeah, spirit work, spells, divination, summoning and the like. I don't consider it my religion, in fact I don't really consider myself religious in the slightest. It's a part of my life, but not what I focus my day to day doings around. I believe in higher beings, different planes and the like, but I certainly do not bend on knee to worship any of them. I'll summon who I might need to complete a working, and work WITH them, but would never devote myself to them.

I dabble with Greek/Roman gods, as well as Celtic, Hoodoo, Voodoo and a lot of the spirits described in the mediaeval grimoires. Anywho, that's my lot!
