I'm not even sure what BM is, but it seems positive. Why be so ugly and derogatory?

Because every single burner that I have ever met has been shitty to me because I have not traversed the playa. Even when I was intending to go, they were all eliteist twatwaffles towards me. I reserve my right to be a bitch based upon all my past dealings with Burners.

One of my favorite things about BM is acting so outside of the societal norms... it's amazing, you can just sit down with a total stranger and start chatting and then discover that you have some fundamental things in common... eat SO MUCH bacon... biking topless... sigh... :D :D :D

Mmm playa bacon. I heard its good. I'm hoping to make this a memorable experience. Not to be "cool" or to be better than anyone else. Just to be around people with an open mind that stretches for miles.

Cool, I've never added anyone to my ignore list before! Now I know how. :)

Closer to the actual burn we should figure out where we're camping and all try to make attempts to go visit each other... if you aren't yet, you might want to consider becoming a member of tribe.net, which is kind of like a MySpace but with a more hippie/burner sort of twist.

According to the website, the man burns in 89 days. Yaaaaay!

You have a right to be a beyotch because you met some burners you didnt like, AmArtica? 60,000 people went to Burning Man last year. But if you are the way you are representing yourself (judgemental, sterotyping, holier-than-thou) I wouldn't be nice to you either!

Stripperfest Burning Man...?

:D
Did we talk about this when you were here?!?!?
E and I plan on going next year. It's too close to the wedding this year, and we already have a lot of finances tied up in our home and other vacations. I totally think next year we should have an SW camp. The whole thing works just giving to those in need. I've heard even bartering is discouraged, but happens. I can't wait to go next year.
Like others say, get a tutor if you're concerned. Otherwise take books and try to get some studying in (yeah right :P)

Oh, geez, people, Amarticia is sharing her thoughts about the event. Frankly, I have a similar concerns. I don't hate hippies or anyone else, but what she is saying about "trustifarians" just may very well be true.

My former roommate/business partner is a yearly burner, as are all of her friends. She admits that there is a very palpable attitude of elitism and exclusivity amongst some burners--her camp especially. We were talking about me going and I said, "Eh, I don't think I'd fit in with your group. They'd think they were cooler than little midwestern me." She was like, "Yeah, they probably would, but fuck 'em. You're cooler than them." I don't need to be anywhere near that kind of vibe. I always told her the only way I'd go is if I could establish a "Fuck Art" camp right next to hers, pass out celebrity magazines, and blast pop music out of a Hummer.

Also, last year was the first year that all of the old guard started saying it's too big, the vibe has changed, too many weekend warriors and curiosity seekers, it's all gone to shit, etc. And people are threatening to split off and form new events. Once it gets to that stage it just feels like drama.

I think Burning Man is a brilliant, beautiful concept and I would have LOVED to attend 10 or so years ago.

Yeah, that's true. My sister used to go to BM every year. Until the year they banned guns. (97?) Now she goes to a yearly festival in Northern California (near where BM first started) that has a cap of 300 people. She's probably right in your boat Dottie, except that she finds ways to contribute to the collective experience without the strictures of BM itself.

Last year wasn't 'the first year'. It's every year. :)

I guess there are trustafarians. But personally I applied for a half price ticket and qualified and I'm saving $20 every week so that I can have a great time. There are 60,000 people in one area and, as I think we all know as people who have worked in a stigmatized profession, stereotypes are lame. There might be 10,000 douches there but a 1/6 douche:cool person ratio is better than the average night at a club. :D :D

I mean... you CAN make a Fuck Art camp . You can bring your Hummer. You can show pictures of celebrities. Those are all things that are contributing and valid. If you ever choose to do so, that would be really neat.

It's what you make of it. Or decide mentally what it is and construct. Any/either way. :)

Last year wasn't 'the first year'. It's every year. :)

Nah, nah...I didn't mean "It all went to shit last year!" Haha! It's just that HER group started saying that last year and they're the people I'd be going with and...eh. I just don't need that.

I'm sure there are plenty of people saying "It ain't been Burning Man since back in '94"...:D

Oh, and I actually devised quite a brilliant concept for my Fuck Art camp. If I ever go it will be really cool. The irony, of course, that I can't escape is that it is art. Fuck that! Guess I'll never be able to make my mark. Haha!

I'm going!! I bought my ticket the day they went on sale.
It's my first year back since 2005 so I'm really excited. If you guys that are going do decide to have a meet up let me know!

Does anyone know where you'll be camping yet? I usually end up around 7 or 7:30 for some reason.

Only one month and a few days away!!

I can't afford to go this year. Dammit.

why isn't burning man free ? why can't everyone just pitch in all bring stuff out there to make it work.... that would seem to go along with the whole artistic ideal

anomar

Well keira, they have to have law enforcement so shit like this does not happen.

Quote:
“It’s not what we represent,” he said. “We represent free love. We’re out here showing people you can live with a group of people and share life without the complication of money and bills.”

Burning Man also have to actually *get the land legally* from the state of Nevada. That's a very expensive permit. The impact of 50,000 people suddenly showing up in the desert, while leaving no ecological trace, has to be negated by people um... being responsible for it.

Stevie06
07-23-2008, 01:56 PM
Its not even the ticket price thats keeping me from going, I think the tickets are reasonable because you have law enforcement, medical help, port-a-potties for the week, not to mention the art installations they fund. The event would be impossible to do for free.
Since my ex took all our camping stuff with him when we broke up, I would have to buy all that stuff. And the gas to get down there would probably be more than I can afford right now too.
I want to go, but the idea of trying to get the money and stuff I need together at this point is too stressful for me.

that's a good point. I've seen that article, I've also seen the one about RF throwing sticks and rocks at officers... really made me feel sad because everyone is going to judge the group based on the actions of a small percentage of people.

Yeah, the art is astonishing and massive.

Sorry that the idea is stressful, and sounds like it's tied up in a lot of other things in your life... so hopefully when you do make it out again it will be part of a lot of good stuff going on for you. :)

FYI, I got my ticket back in March for $150, they have them available @ that price point from Feb-May I think... better than the $180 I spent for 2 days at Sasquatch! Oooof.

I hear you about it costing a fucking small fortune to actually get there and buy all your supplies. I'm only 4 hours away but we're renting a cargo van so I'm sure gas will be at least 150+ each way....and all the supplies ughhh....My ex has all my supplies too.
I bought most of the stuff but he's in the UK so I have no way to get anything (doubt he brought any of it over with him anyway), which means we have to buy all new stuff.

So far we have a really good tent and a really good air mattress but I still have a very very long list of shit I need to get. Not to mention all the money it costs for food. I'm stocking up this year. Last time I was there I ate nuts and supplement bars the whole time and I was so hungry by the time we left that we had to stop at a casino in Reno so I could eat everything in sight at the buffet. Food tastes soooo good after not having a real meal for a week.

I'm buying a grill this time around so we call make grilled cheese sandwiches and veggie burgers. I want to be as comfortable as possible.

I just hope the weather is cooperative this year and there's not a lot of dust storms or worst of all, rain!!

This is my 3rd time going and I have a feeling it's going to be even better than ever this year! Lots of people I know are going and lots of SW'ers too!

Stevie06
07-23-2008, 02:33 PM
Yeah, I just need to plan better so I can make it out there next year. The past few years I bought my ticket early and got a cheap one, but at this point they are $300.
I also know that the group of people I go with don't have a plan for a shade structure this year. I went without one my first year and daytime was pretty miserable.

Yeah I hear you on that. I will never ever go without a shade structure again either! I hate the heat. At least it's dry heat though.
I'm really pale too so I tend to burn easily. I will be slathering on the sunblock every 45 minutes, that's for sure. I got a nasty sunburn my first year because I decided it would be a great idea to sunbathe topless on top of someones RV.
That was a very very bad idea. I was in pain for days and bright red.

A good idea for food are those vacuum-sealed indian foods, basically all of those 'camping foods' from Trader Joes. 3 minutes in hot water from a camp stove and you have a feast!

So excited! I'm with a camp, I'll msg y'all when I find out what our address is. :)

What kind foods do you think you will bring this year Magdalena? I'm thinking dehydrated foods. A grill sounds like a great idea. I'll be stopping by for my grilled cheese sandwich. ;)

You guys are making me scared of the heat. I don't want sunburn. I'm scared I won't bring enough clothes or too many or not enough stuff or something will break.

Well you don't sweat that much because it's so extreme that sweat just evaporates as soon as it hits the air... um, that's not reassuring... :P Start drinking water now (you need to drink about a gallon a day once you get there, but most people's bodies have a hard time absorbing that much if they aren't used to constant hydration) and maybe get a camelbak, or at least a nalgene. Oh, and a sippy cup -- there are lots of random little bars everywhere and you need yr own cup, and you want a spillproof one too.

SO EXCITED! eeeee.

^Omg that's alot of water. I barely get down my 1.5 liters a day. I'm gonna have to wear a diaper I'll be pissing so much. lol Adult sippy cup I'm sure to keep the dust out.

Not sure that I might not be doing the RV or not this year. Ahh I'm going no matter what but I wanted to go in comfort. Still up in the air though.

Let's see......I'm bringing lots of mango's cause they hold up pretty well compared to most other fruits. And there is nothing better than eating fruit on the playa in the warm sun. Trust me.
Also, I'm going to be bringing lots of tortilla wraps and rice and beans and veggies to make burritos and stuff like that. Plus chips and salsa and Hummus and pita bread.

And I'll have lots and lots of candy cause I have a huge sweet tooth. You're more than welcome to share some with me too;)

Yes, totally come by for grilled cheese sandwiches and candy and mango's. It's gonna be sooo much fun!!

I've been buying a few supplies online today. I ordered a whole bunch of fans to keep myself cool and a shower too.
I still have about 75 more things on my list to scratch off though.

Are you going to be going with a camp TM?

Dude my first year I had to go to the ER tent have an IV put in and have saline put into me because I got SO dehydrated. But I was barely drinking any water at all and probably partying a bit too much.
It's now a habit of mine to drink a ton of water everyday because of BM lol.

It's strange but you really don't have to pee that much. Probably because you're losing water from the heat and sweat and stuff. But just in case I'm actually bringing with a portable toilet so I don't have to run to the porta potties at 4 am. It's soooo cold at night so the last thing you want to do is crawl out of your tent and go roaming around to use the bathroom.

Oh, bring TONS and I mean tons of baby wipes.

anomar- thanks for the tip about Trader Joes. I have one really close to me so I'll def. be going there to stock up on the Indian meals.

I have a pee funnel...

This one, though it seems this one

is more popular.

Whizz in a gallon jug and empty it periodically. It's so weird and fascinating to see exactly how much you're peeing!

I'm drinking a big glass of water right now. Yee fuckin' haw. :D

I'm going with a group of people, half virgins & half veterans and camping w/ a larger group...

Magdalena_666

I saw those pee funnels at the store a few months ago. I'm gonna get some of those too. It will make using my portable toilet a lot easier.

TigersMilk
07-24-2008, 09:03 PM
Anomar thanks for posting that. The first one: have you ever accidentally peed on yourself using it? I think I'm gonna get one of those for my drunk moments.

Madaglena I'll be a good virgin burner and drink my water. I don't want to go to the ER tent.

You have to practice with the travelmate to get a seal... the other one looks a lot easier to use, but less compact. You can wait and try to get one from Pee Funnel Camp (there every year!), but theirs are not very hardy.

Amazing news, I get to go after all! The past few days I made quite a bit of money and also found 2 people to go in my car to split gas cost...and even found a tent to borrow. Maybe it was this thread that got me started figuring it out, anyway, I'm going but I have no idea where I'll be cuz I think we are camping in the free area this year.

Whoa, Stevie, we totally manifested your making bank in the midst of this recession b/c you're spiritually destined to be there w/ us! :P :P :P

Naw, for reals, yay and congratulations! I remember seeing you for about four minutes out on the playa ummm in 06, over at a dome. :D It'll be awesome to get to go on your own, w/o your ex, too. Probably a very different experience.

Gotta find a new ride.

What has everyone done so far for preparations?

anomar
07-31-2008, 02:04 PM
Oh noes!

Last year I found a ride off of CL searching for 'burning man'. He posted like 2 weeks before hand in strictly platonic looking for someone to ride with him, and we met in advance to figure out details, decide exactly how much $$ I would contribute, and make sure neither of us is a total weirdo. Worked out great! If CL isn't working out, eplaya (the official BM forum) and tribe.net are great resources.

Not too much, but I have a pretty good idea of what I'm bringing based on previous years. I'm meeting up w/ my campmates next week to outline it some more.

I am considering going to BM this year, but I might have to drive there cross country all by myself. I will know a few people there, but won't be going with them. Is this a dumb idea, to go it essentially solo? I'm into survival and "radical self-reliance," I'm just wondering how easy it is to meet new people and make friends and have fun.

As I've heard from my burner friends people are SUPER friendly there. Its a helping and caring environment. If you need a hand someone is there. If you need a drink of water someone is there. If you're good at very hot and very cold unpredictable desert survival then I think you would be ok.

It's cool going solo -- though depending on the city you live in you can probably find lots of like minded people -- you might have a much better time finding someone who needs a ride who will chip in on gas and help you prep!

You'll want to have the things that are essential -- while people are generous, it is scary to be dependent on other people's water. (That sentence even makes me nervous!)

It is SUPER easy to make friends! I found that it was amazing, for the first time, to be so comfortable just sitting with someone and talking until I found a great connection. That happened over and over again. In real life I'm far too standoffish to actively seek those connections . I'm such a different person on the playa and I love it.

I found the survival guide - at least the 'what to bring' part

BrodieLux

Thx for the advice, Tiger and Anomar. I have a nice sized SUV so I know I will have plenty of room to stock gallons of water, and though I don't have desert survival training under my belt (yet), I am fine with very hot heat.

So, the things that are essential are: water, food, something to shit in (and some way to dispose of it), baby wipes, and shade from the sun, clothing in case it gets super cold, and a first aid kit. Anything else?

I wish I had found this post a bit sooner. $300 a ticket now? Yikes. I only have $200 in fun spending money. 2-3 weeks to save up at least $200 in extra money... I wonder if it's possible?

I just got my ticket off craigslist for $225. People who can't go will be selling them right about now.
anomar, you should pm me where you are camping so I can find you and we can hang out. I am finding my people off the board when I get there so I have no idea where I will be, except it will be in the free camping area.
Oh, I am so excited. I have a feeling this is going to be a personal-journey-awesome time for me. No ex, and he is not going AT ALL this year which just makes me all tingly inside.
