Good idea! I like to leave things up to chance anyway.
I'm sorry to be a bother, but how do you find tickets on craigslist? I typed in 'burning man' and nothing came up. I must be doing something wrong... I'm fairly new to this whole craigslist thing.
Okay, nevermind, I think I figured it out. But phew, no deals here...

You can also try eplaya... since it is a burningman focused forum, the rules on buying and selling tickets are very clearly laid out and it's easy to follow. :) People are not allowed to jack up the price on there.

I'm meeting with my camp-mates tonight to discuss what we're packing and when we're leaving (3 are virgins, 3 are 3x-ers). I'll post that list later tonight for y'all to see!

So I can't go this year - I shouldn't spend money when I'm about to move, and I definitely shouldn't miss biology class. Science is not my thing.
I'm for sure going next year, but I have some questions...
1. Those giant things that people build, do they build them year round and bring them to show off, or do they build it there? Or both?
2. The costumes, premade or somehow created out there?
3. Which airport would you fly into, if flying?
4. And oof, if you're flying... could you rent a car? I wonder if extreme desert exposure has any fees... With gas prices probably going higher next year, driving just doesn't seem like an option. Can you rent RV's?
5. If you play music, how do you play it? Boom boxes don't seem very effective.
6. The bathing thing.. how do you do that?
Sorry, just very curious about how this works, and want to do it right next year.

I can only answer a few of your questions since most of the stuff I've learned are from my burner friends.
2. The costumes, premade or somehow created out there?
*You make them beforehand and you can trade once you get out there if you want to.
4. And oof, if you're flying... could you rent a car? I wonder if extreme desert exposure has any fees... With gas prices probably going higher next year, driving just doesn't seem like an option. Can you rent RV's?
*Yes you can rent RV's. You can also rent a car but don't tell them that your are taking it to burning man.
5. If you play music, how do you play it? Boom boxes don't seem very effective.
*You get a stereo system and run it off a generator.
Are you sure sure you can't go? CL or Tribe is good for getting last minute tickets people are giving up for cheap.
6. The bathing thing.. how do you do that?
*Baby wipes. Lots of them. More than you think you'll ever need.
Here is a funny burning man video my FOF made:

Thanks for the info! I think I've got everything figured out now.
I want to go so bad... this whole event fits my personality perfectly. I'm a techno/hippie person. And I love beautiful sunsets and fire dancers so much... But right now's just not the time to be doing crazy, expensive things unfortunately.
Next year for sure though. Time to start working on some insane costumes! (Gah, quick, run away before you make any irrational decisions, Michelle!)

Do you really need GOGGLES? What for? And what kind of things do you bring as gifts?
TigersMilk

^^Dust storms. To protect your eyes during a dust storm. They are fierce out there.
BrodieLux
08-10-2008, 05:24 PM
What kind of goggles then? Like science lab goggles or swimming pool goggles?
MichelleJade
08-10-2008, 08:51 PM
This is all a guess of course, since I just heard of this event recently...
I think any goggles you can see out of will do. I don't think you have to order them from a science website or anything like that, just something to keep the sand out of your eyes from time to time.
Also, for gifts, the first thing I thought of was like handmade bead bracelets. I'm not sure why, but I vaguely remember this in the rave culture. It was like a way to remember the other person, something like that. So along those lines...

Meeting with my camp mates to do a dry run of our dome today! I'm super stoked. In 11 days I'm heading OUT!
The only thing I'm remotely worried about is my boyfriend... he's not coming and he's a bit stressed/jealous about me going off to the Burn, just not being there. I'm communicating to him that I love him and I'm going to be exploring lots of other aspects of myself, but does anyone have any ideas about other things we can do for each other? We are going to go out to an AMAZING restaurant the night before I leave and he's making me a little care package and we have promised to write letters to each other every day, but I'd love to find more ways to help him feel loved while I'm out being decadent in the desert without him...
I just pm'ed BrodieLux, TigersMilk, Stevie06 and Madgalenda_666... is anyone else on SW going? :)

Awesome! See you there! :) I recommend posting in the rideshare area of eplaya (google it), which is a great way to find someone to split w/ you.

YES! You must have goggles. You don't want your eyeballs bleeding from all the sand.

^^Yup!!! Look at the pics I uploaded in this thread:
In the first picture, I'm wearing goggles and covered in dust. that's not simply sand -- it's alkalai dust. You do NOT want that in your eyes!!!

Dude, it's all about ELECTROLYTES! When I get up in the morning and crawl out of my tent, the first thing is a big cup of gatorade. oR haterade. Or emergen-c.
Then orgy!

Anomar, I am having the same boyfriend thing. He is really not into going (and in truth he would be a pain in my ass) and he is nervous because I'm going with a couple I had a threesome with there last year...so...yeah. But I know I will not cheat. As long as I don't do E. :)
I have no idea where I'm camping, actually I have to find my camp on the board this year when I get there, so I will attempt to find you at some point.
anomar
08-15-2008, 06:02 PM
That's the fun... you can just reinvent yourself over and over again and the interactions you had with people last year can just restart this year. Yay!
Luckily for my boyfriend, that means knowing to myself that I'm a different person now then I was a year ago, so I'm focusing this year on all sorts of other aspects of myself. Of course, everyone still gets to see my naked ass, but that'll never change!
Oh god. Our camp expects us (our little cell) to make food for 100 people. Aaaack!

I found a roadtrip buddy on CraigsList, met him, he's nice but a 21 year old socially awkward dork who will definitely annoy me. I'm 50/50 on whether to just do it alone. But it's a l-o-n-g drive from NJ.

I am having trouble finding a decent shade structure...because I have no experience tying knots or knowing how to secure a tarp against 75mph winds. WHat should I do?
TigersMilk
08-19-2008, 01:13 PM
^^I'm not sure there are people I'm camping with that have that taken care of.
I recommend joining Tribe because they have burning man groups or joining eplaya and looking there.

The main thing is getting stakes big enough! I use 15" long nails (from the hardware store). I've used flimsy shade structures; just nail them down.
And eplaya and tribe are both great.

Aaaah I'm leaving on Sunday morning!
I'm so excited. I'm 90% packed. I had a wonderful dream about being on the playa... when I bicycled to work this morning at 9:30, it was still cold outside, even though it was really sunny . You can't imagine (unless you can) how excited that got me, thinking about that period when the sun has come up but it's still so so cold... :D :D :D

just got to reno, going up tomorrow, yeeha!
One thing I would reccomend that hasnt been mentioned is getting a rubber particle mask from a loews, the kind that covers your nose and mouth and has the charcoal inserts, typically used for vapor, painting cars and such. Regular dust masks are ok, but the playa dust gets in there and after an hour or so you might as well not be wearing it. The vapor mask is definitely overkill for general conditions, but it is an absolute life saver when the big white outs roll through the city. My first few years there I always cursed the dust, then last year I got one of those masks and it was the most amazing thing ever for when the shit gets really thick. They are usually about $30 at a loews. Yeah, you look a little silly wearing it, but life isnt really fun when you cant breathe. Id also reccomend long sleeve linen shirts, that seems to keep making my list year after year.
Im working on a big photo project while Im there (Im a photographer), if anyone would like to have their portrait taken during the burn, drop me a pm and I'll give you my camp address.

D'oh! My camp was pretty massive, in any case...
I had a great time! I think I actually had a better time last year b/c I was looking to get more out of it. Last year I was much lonelier, about to go to Guam, more exuberant. This year, I left my boyfriend at home and it was much more of a vacation from work.
And the white outs were INSANE! We had to set up camp & our domes without being able to see 2 feet ahead... jeez... also, my bike was so useless! Ended up walking to the trash fence 2x! I saw 3 sunrises...
I still got a lot of out of it, though . Such a magical city, and who I am is so different too. :) I'm still readjusting to the default world.
If it was anyone's first time... I highly recommend going a second time! The first year is so much about survival and learning how to just exist in that environment... you need to return and be luxurious and decadent in a world that can't support normal life... :)

Anomar I went to your camp looking for you on Tues but a guy setting up said you weren't there yet:(. I left a message for you though and told him to tell you Magdalena from SW came by and told him where I was camped at. He said there were 2 people with your name camped there so not sure if he got the message to you or not.
I was camped pretty close to you. I was at 3:45 and fairlane. I kept meaning to go back but we were all over the place so I never got the chance. You know how it is there. But we will def. connect next year!
I did get to spend a lot of time hanging with the wonderful Tigersmilk and her camp which was so much fun. AMAZING people. I'm almost tempted to move to San Diego. Had a lot of good times with them and I'm still recovering lol.
I had such a wonderful time this year and can say this was my favorite year yet. They already announced next years theme which is 'Evolution'.
I want to be back now though! I miss the playa already. Aside from the dust and heat that is.
That fucking dust storm on Sat. was horrible. We were at the temple when it hit and it tore down our shade structure. What a mess.
Otherwise, it was everything I hoped for and more.
My only regret is that I didn't get to meet more SW'ers.
Glad everyone else had such good experiences as well.
Anomar- Your camp was HUGE. How many people were in it? When did you end up arriving?
anomar
09-03-2008, 04:27 PM
Oh man! Miscommunication! there were 170 people in my camp though it seemed like the majority of them were in RVs, hmph... I got there on Monday (set up in the dust storm)!!!
Evolution is SUCH a great theme . I'm excited!!! :) :) :)
I'll post pictures soon.. unfortunately, this year finally killed my camera, I think... oh well!
(BTW, a tip... you can get very cheap tickets if you prepare... this year, the low income tickets were $145 -- just pay by May 31st... and the scholarship tickets were $95 -- payable AT THE GATE!)

Woohoo, that festival changed my life! Now who's going to Earthdance?
anomar
09-10-2008, 10:46 AM
I went to Earthdance last year (Oregon) and it was lame... the cops shut down the sound during the time that the earthdance song was supposed to be played... and it was just damp and terrible. :P
If there are any decompressions in your area, definitely check them out! :)
Glad to hear you had such a positive experience... I'm really excited for next year!

For a list of festivals you could try Jambase.com. Since I am east coast, I think I'm going to Leaf in black mountain in a couple weeks.
Brodie&Anomar, my cousin and a few fellow burners were telling me how great Reggae on the River fest is in Cali. I also heard Lightning in a Bottle is cool too. You guys should check em out next summer!

Yeah, I wanted to go to LiB this year but it did not pan out, sadly enough... I went to Kinetic this year, which was amazing... a party in the Pacific Science Center (a kid's science museum in Seattle)... four stages among the dinosaurs!

Ooooo Dinos and disco, that sounds fun! I am totally taking an RV next year (luckily this couple at our camp let me use theirs) so if you want to escape a sandstorm or the heat in some AC, you guys are more than welcome to come party/nap/whatevers with me.
My friend handled all this camp shit this past time and we were somewhat unprepared shade structure wise. but also i have a camp question-- Like, I know we camped with the tuna guys, but if you do not have a specific space, do they give you one or do you have to find a camp to camp at?

I'm actually feeling depressed right now because I wish I could live in Black Rock City all the time and instead nothing comes close. I'm currently in Portland and heading to Seattle tomorrow. Portland seems to embrace the freaks in a good way but in general people seem to be kind of depressed and stuck in a funk.

You're in PDX? Wish I'd known that sooner, as I'm a resident!
Aside from the intense survival skills you learn out there, having the opportunity to change yourself for a while and immerse in Black Rock is just a life-changing experience.
Kalligirl -- if you do not camp with a specific camp, then you just find an empty patch when you get there and settle down. :)
