why is is impossible for me to begin any real studying before 10 o'clock at night? Does this happen to anyone else? >:(
YES!!!! I don't get it!! It's like I just can't get anything done unless I burn through the night. No matter what. It's the weirdest fucking thing! Even when I manage to get myself on a somewhat normal schedule...this is still true!
And, can I just take this opportunity to say how much I hate my "History of Modern Western Philosophy" class? Hate it! Vehemently!
I'm a science major. I just don't think like a philosopher. These "proofs" of God's existence just seem like such an incredible waste of time to even think about. It's just so much pointless mental masturbation. So far, Hume is the only one I can stomach at all.
Thanks for letting me vent.

I couldn't STAND philosophy, so I dropped it. I thought it would be about good and evil, or why we exist and stuff like that. Oh no, weeks of how people prove that some Catholic version of god exists. :weeping:

Not art school, but I am a film major, and it's my last semester so it's one upper division film class- blaxsploitation, and the rest are just for fun!
Nice! I'd so fail Aerobics as a class though! ;D
Woo-I got into the 4 classes I wanted:
Ancient Greece
Roman Civ (I may trade this out for an Anthro class, not sure if I want a classic minor. And I hate Romans)
Islamic Art
Ancient Near East Religion
Plus the Seminar, if I get approved.

Anyhoo, I'm currently writing a paper examining the sexual double standards in modern Western society. My assertion is that the rigid control of sexual relationships [due to the madonna-whore dichotomy] is diminishing due in part to advances in reproductive technology and shifting gender roles. Kapeesh? SW girls could rock this topic.
Cool. Look up papers by Roy F. Baumeister. He writes really interesting things on the repression of female sexuality and "sexual economics."

Black Writer's in the U.S.
Shakespeare's Tragedies and Romances
Irish Revival Literature
Loooots of reading and writing.
Oh wait, that's what I do.

I've ocmpletely cut myself off socially. It's so bad that I own a fucking neopet now,y'all.

I agree with the ladies up there ^^^ who are bitching about philosophy.
I'm good at it because I'm a good bullshit artist, but it stops there. Philosophy was designed for the ego-stroking of haughty academic types and stoners. There, I said it! It's what we were all thinking anyway... }:D
So true. Philosophy only really goes well with cheetos and viewings of Dark side of the Oz. ;D
I'm so happy I didn't have to take my exam this morning because I got an A on the first one. Yay! Now I have to go take the math one. Oh, my head hurts already....

I'm taking a nutrition course, and they want me to find someone with a "typical Canadian diet, ie. high fat, low fiber", and interview them about their food choices. WTF??? "Um, hi, can I study your shitty diet? No judgement, of course!". Retarded. I'm gonna make it up. >:(

Aerobics
Modern Dance
Blaxsploitation
Acting for Film and Television
Adobe Photoshop
Digital Photography
Your course load sounds like my dream schedule.
After I get done with this formal education bullshit, I'm headed to art school!
I'm obsessed with photography/digital editing...

We had peer critiques in class and no one fucking understood my thesis. "lulz but cheating isn't ok regardless of gender. zomg what do you mean sexual double standard? are you talking about school, religion, etc?"
NO YOU MORONS IM TALKING ABOUT WESTERN CULTURE
I hate peer critiques! I wish we could just have teacher critiques instead.
^^^ Oh and sorry for talking shit about Phil-to the-osophy! It's got it's pluses, but it's a prelude to science and I think scientific thinkers have difficulty dealing with or appreciating the value of the abstract
Ugh. I hate people who are willfully ignorant.

I want to be in an English classes a few levels up so I can get more peer interaction. I hate standing out to this extent and I feel like a bit of a know-it-all sideshow if I go all out in class discussions. Reminds me of middle school... :(
^I can commiserate. But I've had the same problem in level 400 classes. Sometimes it seems my school is just a housing for the kids who couldn't get into RU. :(

^^^ Same. I tend to overanalyze myself though and I wouldn't be surprised if you do as well. I gotta keep myself in check sometimes; listening thoroughly to other people is sometimes hard for me because I get so excited about what I'm going to say. I try to calm myself down but I'm paranoid I'm getting too big for my britches, so to speak, and it's too early to already be cultivating that kind of rep
I'm really worried about this too. I interrupt people in class and lately I've been oh so chock full of advice in the threads.
I think I need to learn how to sit back and watch.

Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
I have to take summer classes, all because my transfer school FORGOT to updated their transfer requirements. Now, if I don't take summer school, I can't graduated for an extra year (and it's already gonna be at least two.) Bah.
I haven't registered yet, but here's my summer schedule:
Business Stats
Business Law
Gay and Lesbian Literature
And the death that I'll hopefully get into for fall is:
Spanish 3020-conversation and literature
Business Stats II
Information Systems (I don't even know wtf that is)
Marketing
Death. Death to school.

I'm tempted to have my bf's gpa review my madonna-whore dichotomy paper but he's a tad of a misogynist and it's all about sexuality and liberation blah blah so I'm still ehh about it. Though he IS a published author soo... hmm
Your paper sounds really interesting! Cool, what kinda books has your bf published, if you don't mind me asking? One of my life goals is to become published!

I got in! Classes start June 16. I have to order a bunch of supplies, a couple books, and get a Mac (probably going for the Mini). At least my job will pay for the tuition, books and supplies, and I can also get a discount on the Mac as well.

Nice! Yeah, it's one of my goals, too. Someday... :)
It's my boyfriend's grandpa actually, but he recently published a fiction book with massive engineering themes. He loves exploring remote islands and he used to work as an engineer for NASA, and he LOVES storytelling so just imagine the 3 put together somehow. :)
Toka Nantos is the book.
That's groovy! I'm more of a non-fiction type myself, but I really honor the creativity of fiction writers. I was originally going to be an English professor but then I took a writing class and almost killed myself :bitelip: from all of the stress! I'm already a perfectionist and honestly that's hard if you're trying to be a professional writer. I drive myself insane doing that so phil-to the-osophy it is! LOL }:D

I'm a creative writer. I'm also a control freak. It's a difficult and stressful path to traverse.
I'm just getting into non-fiction writing (also a newer genre called creative non-fiction) and I dig it. But the question is... what do you consider philosophy writing? Fiction or Non? ;)

From my experience with writers who are biased - don't do it! If he's set in his ways (I'm not saying he is, he just might be) he may allow his disinterest/distaste in the subject affect how he critiques your work.

Creative non-fiction!? That sounds like something I'd love. Philosophy itself is considered Non-fiction, but whether or not you consider a philosopher's work as fiction is relative I'm sure.

I checked my Writer's Reference. It doesn't say anything about quoting a quote. Just cite the article you're quoting. :)

^ in CBE you'd do (M 2000, citing X 1999). I think there's probably an MLA equiv, but it's been too long since my English days, I don't know offhand ;). Definitely should note that it's a secondary source citation though.

Can I just say how much I LOVE Google? Google Books has become my saviour. Instead of spending time swearing at my article search at my libraries website and getting NOWHERE, I can look up tons and tons of books online. You can even read alot of them online (ha-I sound like an advert!). At very least you can search the index and table of contents of the book before you order it from the library or trek around finding it and finding out it's all wrong. (and they have cool old books, too)
I'm still working out Google Scholar, but damn. Amazing stuff. This is the kind of thing that makes me want one of those phone/web/keyboard phones. If they make one with a book reader capabilities, I will buy one and climb into google-land.

^ I have that too, for my nutrition class. Luckily, it's literally the easiest class I've had since like 9th grade.
I took a nutrition and a health class about a year ago for GE units. Ridiculously easy. I think I got 100% on every quiz, midterm, and final. It was an informative class though.
I guess early midterms give me like 6 weeks to study for finals though.
