So. I met with the councilor yesterday. Here's the deal.
These classes are an A and a B. I still have 4 F's (from not attending previous classes) and my GPA will still be crap so Ill STILL be on academic probation BUT I was able to get them to let me take 13 units in the fall (I was only allowed 6 previously).
I cannot get aid yet so I have to charge my classes & books for the fall. ($1,000ish) which sucks.
BUT after I finish the fall semester 2 more Fs will be replaced with whatever grades I get so I should be off academic probation for the spring.
They also said for the 2 classes I have no desire to re-do to remove the Fs I can file something and get them stricken from my record but I think I may just do them in the spring. Then all my Fs will be gone and I will have a brand new transcript.
And (once Im off academic probation) I can get unsibsidized loans because they aren't based on need (income) so thats good. Probably around $2,000 a year which is all I want - enough to cover classes and books. Just sucks that I have to charge a grand for this semester.
So, good news and bad news.

^^That's mostly good though!
My fin aid is all messed up for next semester. They didn't apply any to my term bill, so I had to call everyone yesterday and harass them. They have to process my fin aid 'manually' apparently (how ELSE do you use a computer? Brings up strange visuals.) and I got an extension to pay the bill. Otherwise I owed 5700 by next Tuesday. Yeah, I've got THAT lying around after new car and new apt getting. ::)
I need to start my thesis research. Pronto.

Ew... booklist is going to hurt this semester. With 4 out of 6 classes reporting it's already up to $700.
How in the hell is that legal to do to students!?

-Philosophy (Ethics and Values)
-Black Music
-American Street Dance
It's gonna be a fun semester!
Those sound super fun - especially dance! The other two... not so much! ;D
I wish I could take more credits and I would take yoga or some other exercise type class.... guess it'll have to wait until the spring.
I did my last speech today. Term paper due Thursday and I have finals Thursday and I'll be done.... I already know my grades tho. Theres no way I can't get an A in public speaking and most likely a B in history - maybe maybe maybe an A...

I just finished my fafsa... Im excited to see how much the gov will give me... its like xmas. :-) lol.
I have a scholarship that pays for tuition(I was a good student in highschool) until I get my bachelor's degree. so any grants I get goes straight in my pocket.
I start school back up aug. 24th... really not looking forward to that.

I can't believe yall actually buy books. I've never bought them except for one that the teacher said i HAD to have so I got it for 20 bucks off amazon...and then I never even used it. I make A's too...maybe it's just my school or the fact that a lot of college kids actually want to learn (I just want the paper), but there are ways around spending a bunch on books...
I still haven't signed up for classes or done my housing exemption things....bleh.

yeaaa. I hate spending so much on books... but for most of my classes its necessary.
The professors do lectures and provide notes but alot of times they also assign hw from these books(esp. math homework) so theres no way around it sometimes.

yeah my first two semesters i bought my books at the bookstore, until my friend told me she uses amazon. i've saved so much money doing that. then, i re-sell them on amazon to get most my money back. hmm, which reminds me, i need to post my used books online now.

Wow, I can't imagine not buying books. Most of my classes now are like small seminars where we are required to do the readings and then alternate leading/guiding discussions with the other students.
None of my books are ever cheaper on Amazon! LOL, one of my professors has a tendency to use non-US published things too, so that probably doesn't help my case.

Maybe if you were majoring in math where you need the book for specific problems, but I use the internet to look up stuff for study guides and take good notes. Then go to a study guide and get the answers to everything left.
It's more work than just reading a book, but I'd rather have 500 bucks in my pocket and go hang out with people in a study guide and search for stuff online in between SW-ing than reading a long, expensive, boring text book...bleh!

Theres no way I could have gotten away without a book in Public Speaking. For our final she said to learn
Ch 2 - all topics and definitions
Ch 8 - topics x,y,z, all their subtopics and all definitions
so on and so on
If I didnt have the book I'd have had no idea what she was talking about.
History - I still have not opened the book - it was $80. He did all his classes from power points we had to download. Had I KNOWN that I wouldn't have bought the book.... but I did need the other book since it was a novel and I have to write a term paper on it BUT I probably could have written the term paper by reading a ton of reviews online.
That was my first semester and I bought the books day 1. This next time around Im not buying a book for a week to see how the teacher teaches because if they're anything like History I can save cash.

so .... this is the first time I'm ever doing this while working more than full time. I'm taking a minimum of 3 classes.
So far it's:
* International Business
* Princilples of Marketing
* Business Math
Usually I take 1-2 classes and it's a STRUGGLE to stay on top of that AND work 45-50 hours a week AND maintain some kind of sliver of a social life (and find time for SW!!).
I do NOT look forward to any of this.

Fall
Cultural Anthropology
History 17B (post Civil War American History)
Psych 1
Math A
Plan for Spring is
English
Human Development
Nutrition
Math (whichever is after A)
Something fun
Then 4 classes in the summer (2 sessions, 2 classes each)
I couldn't imagine going to school while working a f/t job. I can barely keep it together and school IS my job.

I worked 35-40 hours a week at the bookstore and did 4 classes a semester for my first year of school. I would lapse into jags of staring and crying around exams. It was insane. I SO hope I get the amount I should for my fin aid, so I can cover rent with it and only have to work 1 day a week for bills and stuff.

Well I'm half way done with this semester. This is my first time doing the whole on-line school deal. What a mistake deciding to take 12 credits. I never have enough time to study. I've been missing days at work because I have papers due every Sunday. I'm really worried about my mid-terms in two weeks. I just can't find the time to work 2 jobs and study and still keep up with coursework. I hope I don't blow my financial aid.

YES! My fin aid is sorted out! I'll have about $3600 extra per semester, after tuition. YES! I could almost live on that and not need to work. You laugh, but it's true. I will work, but not nearly as much as I used to.

I'm finishing up community college after this fall semester. All I have left is Calculus and Chemistry II, which sucks cause I was trying to squeeze them into my summer and graduate by now. Moving on to a state college in the Spring hopefully :D

^^ Both of the classes I took had pre-reqs that I have yet to take. I think as long as you eventually take the classes you'll be fine. Im not taking English until the Spring and 5 of my 6 classes require English first.

I have 12 credits. I'm scared though, I just transferred to a tougher school.
I'm taking business stats, marketing, advanced spanish grammar, and some computer class i'm required to take.
As for prereqs, both colleges I've attended required the prereqs to be done prior to taking the other classes, or they would drop you (or not let you register).

08-24-2008, 09:21 PM
^^Actually, the community college I attended wouldn't even allow me to register until the prereqs were complete. However, I think it probably has something to do with what the prereqs are, and what the class is. They may be more lenient with some than others.
I think it probably just depends on the school, and how big of assholes they wanna be.

08-25-2008, 08:20 AM
yha, see when i signed up most classes say what prereq you need next to the class and wont let you register for the class unless you have it. The classes i signed up for didn't but I was looking through the undergrad catalog and it had prereqs listed.
I guess i should call them now.

Holy cow.
There were over 30 people trying to get FIVE spots in my math class (including me). Luckily I ran fast enough and trampled enough students to get my add code. Woohoo! Hopefully I get into my Psych class tomorrow or I'll only have 3 classes - 10 units. :(
But whats weird is that I added the class online today and its saying no fees due. Its not charging me for the class. I dont know how or why... maybe because they apporoved my application to re-instate my financial aid  and theyll take the fees out of my check when it gets dispersed. I wish they could do that with books too. I dont have the $500 for my books. :(
Oh, speaking of financial aid. I went in and was like "Look here lady." (ok, maybe not exactly like that) But I said I got 2 As over the summer and I need my financial aid. Ive been blocked from getting it because of bad grades in the Fall 2004 semester. Thats unfair. The girl filled out my paper and I was like "I cant afford my books and classes! How long until it gets approved?" She took it over to the lady and got it approved while I was there at the counter. Woohoo! Of course I wont get my money for a month but thats just one credit card billing cycle and I can just pay it off when I get my money so thats good.

I'm not ready for school again!
So far I'm taking:
2 art history classes (Islamic and Realism)
Intro to Archaeology
The seminar for writing my thesis
Ancient Near Eastern Religion (Which I may trade for Ancient Greek History, depending on the syllabus)
I'm really hoping they email me and let me know WHEN the thesis seminar is. I need to put in my schedule for next week at work!

Well I called about the prereq thing and she said that it shouldn't have let me in,but they won't kick me out of it. They warned that I might not do that great in it, but I don't really care about that, I just need the hours, so YAY!
Also I realized today was the deadline for paying and I went through all my drawers and found the 700 that I needed. I love being a stripper.

So, I've decided my major (and goal). I had gone back and forth many times but Im going to go back to my original major. I've decided to go into the Nursing program to be a RN. More specifically neonatal nurse. This means I have to meet with a new councelor since they have ones specifically for nursing and change my plans for the spring and summer semesters.

Lulz. My trig professor is like a grown up Urkel, but he talks even funnier and he's more pudgy. :3 He's hilariously adorable.
You think thats funny?
My anthropology professor is a hippie chick tatted from head to toe. Her likes? Anything Disney and tattoos.
She is a teacher during the week and a tattoo artist Fri-Sun. And she has the most obnoxious laugh when she thinks shes funny.

That's great Audrey! My mom is an RN in NICU (neo-natal) and she LOVES it.
Im actually really really excited. When I was thinking law I didnt get excited about it - probably because it was the wrong choice. Nursing just fits. :D
So, I got around to talking to B about what his major was. It was international relations. He said when he was young he was all idealistic and thought he was going to work for the United Nations. And here he is, the administrator for a convalescent home. Its not bad, its just funny how its so not related to his degree.

It's Official! I am joining the Semesterly Student Thread.
After wasting the last four years of my life, I am going back this Fall '08. I haven't been in school since Spring '07 and I am kind of nervous. I'm taking two courses on line (Statistics and Psychology) and two on campus (Bio and a Gym class for that 12th credit). Classes started Sep. 2, but my first day on campus is tomorrow. I'm already lost with the online courses cuz I haven't bought any books yet.
I quit my day job (they were driving me crazy!) so that I'd have more time to focus on school during the day. So now, I'm just doing inventories and dancing nights and weekends. Wish me luck, I am planning on finishing this time... only 4 years to go!
