I just wanted to say, I'm really enjoying this discussion & there's so many well-articulated posts here, so I hereby express my deepest hope and wishes that it stays on point and does not become a bloodbath.:smellie_g

I LOVE burlesque! It varies so much depending on the troupe, and that's part of why it is so great!
I perform with Pink Velvet Burlesque (shameless plug: http://www.pinkvelvetburlesque.com) and I love our troupe! We have an awesome combination of performers with many different styles. I would say that our emphasis is on risque humour. There are lots of funny acts, usually with sexiness thrown in. We also have a few of the traditional, classic stripteases and more modern, but still 'campy' stripteases too. Personally, I've been performing for about a year and a half now and I'm still developing. I make no claim to being a great dancer, and some might call me fat (5'7, 150lbs) but I love what I do and that's why I do it. It definitely is not a living for most performers, as usually performances end up costing much more than they bring in.
Our troupe leader, Miss C, described it perfectly when she said "Strippers fulfill the fantasies of their audience, whereas burlesquers fulfill their own."

Check out Texas Star Burlesque. They specifically state that they are a plus-size burlesque troop.
Actually, our name is Big Star Burlesque but thanks for the shout out!
So now, my 2 cents.
We are having our one year anniversary show in about 2 weeks. That means we are nearing a YEAR of having people come to our shows, being booked for performances with bands, community events and the like. We are easily the most active troop in town. We are never without an audience who pays to see us.
I don't think beauty is in any danger of being oppressed by fat activism, for Pete's sake.
pretty much my favourite quote in this thread
