Just got back from a tournament road trip to the lovely Haliburton highlands. Champions last year, not so much this year. Got our asses kicked. A famous trouncing fit for the hockeybobby compendium of noteworthy fiascos. At least we made it out of there alive.

I'm getting a little concerned. Twelve good men, troopers all...and not a one of us made it past midnight three nights running. We're gettin' old. ;)
hb

p.s. Just read about Susan Wayward's little adventure stripping for a hockey team in their locker room at a tournament. It's in the NATO thread, and a good read. Susan has just flown up several notches on the cool graph.

Susan's NATO was a good read. I just hope she kept her shoes on in the locker room.

She had her heels on I think. Those places are one big athlete's foot waiting to happen.

So Sundin is staying put after all. I have mixed feelings about it. I'm sure he did too.

I'm sure Leafs nation is disappointed but Sundin shouldn't be considered selfish for wanting to stay put. How often do fans and media slam players who don't honor their contracts and hold out or demand a trade? Here's a guy who wants to play out his contract for a team that will be missing the playoffs and stay in Toronto (imagine that :P ). In actuality, he should be commended.

^^^ Yeah, the only way I'd want him to leave would be if he came back for sure next season. I hope he ends his career with the Leafs. He's such a good player and a fine person too.

Brad Richards just got traded to Dallas. Details to follow...

Bob_Loblaw

Richards to Dallas was expected. I think the biggest trade was the Atlanta-Pittsburgh one. The Pens have definitely upgraded an already potent lineup. I would have thought their priority would have been to get a defenceman.

My Canucks didn't do anything. Cooke for Pettinger was just a case of getting something for a UFA they didn't plan on resigning in the offseason. I honestly don't see Pettinger as anything more than waiver wire material.

hockeybobby

The Leafs moved three fringe guys for a 2nd a 3rd and a couple of 5th round draft picks...cleared some cap space and opened up some roster spots for young farm team players. There was definitely a market for some of their "no trade clause" players but they wouldn't move. Kubina was willing to move then changed his mind when the offer was presented to him.

I guess trader Cliff did the best he could under the circumstances.

I don't understand Pittsburgh though. I mean Hossa is good, but at this point he's a rental player. They gave up the equivalent of 2 first rounders and 2 decent young players.

I like what Tampa did, even though Richards is a hell of a player, I think they've improved their team overall. And I like what Atlanta did too.

Just my early thoughts on deadline moves.
hb

Snappa
02-27-2008, 06:04 AM
Tampa's move was solely about dumping 4 mil in salary, more if you include the Prospal trade, since he will be asking 3-5 mil as a UFA instead of the 1.9 he made this year. Richards is a hell of a talent, but this year and last, he's been slumping.

A lot has been made of the shitty line-mates he's been paired with, but even putting him on a line with St. Louis and Lecavalier (the $20 million line) wasn't enough to get him producing the way he should. The fans here in Tampa have been split, about half of them still remembering the Con Smyth winner from the cup year, the rest of us seeing that a player costing us a $7m+ cap hit is dead last in the league in +/-.

Washington may have been the big winner this deadline. As far as rental players go, Huet is the steal of the season for a 2nd round pick. For a team that's starting to gel together at the right time, picking up a solid #1 goaltender to take some starts away from old-man Kolzig could be just what they need to get into playoff contention. They looked phenomenal last night against Minnesota, getting all 4 points from their 2nd line. Add Federov to the equation, and their power play just got a lot scarier.

Pittsburgh gave up an awful lot for Hossa, but if it's the piece they need to make it to the Cup finals, it'll be the trade of the year. That's a big if, though.

hockeybobby
02-27-2008, 07:24 AM
Yeah, Washington has collected quite the little Russian contingent now. Federov is a very good player...stanley cups, hart trophy, selkes etc. They've improved their chances of making it into the playoffs.

For Pittsburgh, if they sign Hossa to an extension, they can be satisfied that they have made a good deal...and that would be regardless of what happens in the post season. Of course if they win the cup, it's a slam dunk good move.

Do you like your favourite team more now Josie?

I'm kinda mixed on the Huet deal. If the caps resign him, it's a good deal. If not, a 2nd round pick for what amounts to a back up goalie for the remainder of the season is a bad deal. I'm still grimacing at the 'nucks trade of a 2nd round pick to Buffalo for Noranen who played out the season only to leave to play in Russia.

As far as Richards goes, I'm glad the Canucks didn't trade for him. I just don't see how he'd fit on the team. He's basically the same as Brendan Morrison IMO. You can't tell me Morrison wouldn't put up Richards' type numbers if he played with Lecavalier and St.Louis.

All I have to say is the Bolts second line, which hasn't been scoring consistently all year, had both their goals in last night's game with a 31 year old Halpern centering in his first game in the uniform.

I'm looking forward to seeing Richards in a Dallas uniform tonight (HDNet for you folks with digital cable in the US). Will be interesting to see if he can pick up his scoring pace, and if it really was just a chemistry thing.

He isn't worth what he wants. Very, and i mean very, few players in this league are worth that much. The contracts today are just outright stupid. No-trade clauses for players who don't deserve them abound and zillions get paid for guys who can't do a tenth of what the stars of the 80's and 90s could do.

Goddamned shameful if you ask me.

I watched the first period, then got distracted by some non-hockey watching friends with boobies. (damn the boobies) Managed to catch the overtime. Haven't been overly impressed with Jussi Jokinen playing on the top line, but again, Halpern has really sparked some life into that second line with Ouellet and Darche. Hell, Ouellet's last few games he's given the kind of performance TB was hoping to get out of him all year.

And because no post is complete without a fantasy hockey bitchfest, I was up 11-1 in my H2H league against my formerly Canadian buddy before last night. It's now 7-4. Bastard had 10 assists last night, 6 of them on the power play. If I didn't get a 1 goal against win from Giggy, that score would probably be reversed. No points from either Sedin twin, sigh.

So I have a theory: It is now a point of pride for Mats Sundin to get his team into the playoffs somehow, even if he has to do it all himself. Another brilliant performance last night in Washington.

I think he'd love to just shove it down the throats of his GM and anyone else who thought he should have taken one for the team and waived his no-trade clause.

hb

Bob_Loblaw

Unless the Leafs were to win the cup this year, they still would have been better off trading Sundin for assets that would pay off for years down the line. And though my second favorite team is always the team playing against Toronto, I do find some sick, twisted pleasure in Sundin willing his team to win of late... to stick it to the Toronto organization and media of course! :P

Second, Lightning-Flyers tonight. One of the best games I banged Plexiglass at was in their conference finals in '04. With Philly trying to hang onto the last playoff spot and the Lightning deep in the basement following a fire sale of 1/3 of the bench, watch Tampa Bay win. Seriously.

Aw heck, I live in a minor league town. If I had to choose one team and one team only in the NHL it'd be the Rangers, but their best recent chance was last year. Jagr isn't getting any younger, and without Nylander he'll be lucky to crack 80 points.

I'm in the Lightning's cable market, but TV hockey is a weak substitute for the real thing. If you ever get a chance to see Lecavalier or Ovechkin live, though, do it! They're both wizards.

I saw Manon on a Lightning broadcast a couple weeks ago. She's hotter in civvies than in pads.

Strippers and biscut talk? Could it get any better?

The Wings are almost healthy again. For a while our top 4 defencemen (ca) were out with injuries and that hurt....bad. The Wings whole game is the D making that first quality pass in the transition game. With all the veterans out our Offense really suffered, but we are still 7 points ahead of Dallas wih I think two games in hand. After winning only 2 out of 13 games the Wings have won three straight but we play the Hawks tonight and for some reason they have our number this year.

If you don't take the Wings to make the Western Conference (and what's up with Detroit being stuck in the West?) finals let alone the Stanley Cup finals in any pool I think you will be disappointed.

Bob_Loblaw
03-11-2008, 10:10 PM
I don't know about the Wings making it out of the West this year. I think most teams would rather take their chances against them than the Ducks or Sharks who are peaking at the right time.

I just looked at the schedule and after tonight's game against the Stars we play Nashville 3 times, Columbus 4 times, St.Lou & Chicago twice each. This does not help the Wings in getting ready for the playoffs. Sometime I think Gary Bettman (sp) is retarded.

hockeybobby

I dunno Splut, they should all be good competition. Nashville has a good chance to make the playoffs, and Phoenix has an outside shot. The other 2 teams will be pretty loose since their out of it. I don't think they will be cakewalk games...but i guess what you mean is they have nothing to gain by playing hard. The coach will be on them.

While maybe one team from the West can get into the playoffs it looks like the East will go down to the wire for almost all the playoff spots.

Zetterberg put the boys on his back yesterday and got a natural hat trick. His first goal was just beautiful. He went through two defenders in front of the goal and put hit home through the 5 hole. The extreme slow motion replay was great in HD.

As much as I've hated the unbalanced schedule the last few years, the NHL got it right condensing divisional games at the end of the season.

I just don't see Nashville, Phoenix or Edmonton being able to make up ground to get into the playoffs. As it stands, my Canucks would face the Sharks in the first round. I'm not liking that matchup.

My Lightning are trying their hardest to get the first pick in next year's draft. I'm hoping they succeed in falling to last place overall, because the guy I'm playing in my fantasy league finals has Lecavalier, St. Louis, and Boyle.

Hopefully J-S Giguere's back spasms are minor. I've been riding his goal play right into these finals and with Gerber's schizo performance the last few months, need Giggy and Ward to come up big in the last 2 weeks.

Even though the Leafs have two games vs Boston and one against Buffalo, it's a tough order to expect them to leap frog over at least 4 teams with only 6 games remaining.

On the other hand, Edmonton still has a good shot due to the remaining head to head matchups they have. Would be nice if they could bump Colorado out so all three Canadian teams in the west make the playoffs.

Did you guys see Jonathan Roy (Patrick Roy's son) in the line brawl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN5VppFGasg) on Saturday? What a knucklehead. He has since apologized (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20080324/roy_brawl_080324/20080324?hub=CTVNewsAt11) but he definitely deserves to be suspended. OK this is what I don't like about the NHL. Detroit plays the Blues in Detroit tonight. They then play the Blues at St.Louis on Friday. Neither team plays a game between these games. Why couldn't they have scheduled this as a natural home and away, you know, 24 hrs later they're back on the ice? I love those games where the hits, cuts and stitches are fresh and things get a little heated.

I don't get entertained much by that sort of thing anymore I'm afraid. I've become a little soft in my middle age. I've even begun to question my own involvement in competitive hockey...finding I much prefer the friendly nature of shinny & pond hockey.

^^ You poor Canuckians (in the general Canada sense, not Vancouver fans). How many years has it been since the cup stayed up north for the off-season? 14 seasons since le Habs beat Barry Melrose and the Great One? And that's gotta be bittersweet for Leafs fans, considering the winners.

3 finals in a row with a Canadian team versus a team who plays where snow is something you see on TV. I'd seriously be writing to your parliament/congress/whatever you have up there and proposing legislation making it illegal for Canadian players to work for a team based in the US. Imagine the Leafs, Sens, Habs, Oilers, and Canucks packed with talent like Crosby, Lecavalier, Brodeur, Neidermayer, Giguere, Staal, Brind'Amour, et al.

It would almost be worth getting stuck with Avery, Emery, Neal, and Bertuzzi.

So, that said, who's your pick for the cup today? If the Sharks didn't peak too soon, I'd say they're set up for an amazing run.
