How the hell do the Blues blow a 3 goal lead to the Preds!?! How the hell do the Canucks blow a 2 goal lead to the Avs!?! Time to raid the liquor cabinet
They must have been watching tape of Lightning games from this season. The Bolts have blown more 2 and 3 goal leads in the 3rd period than any team in hockey this year.

I'm playing in a 4 on 4 tourney this weekend in Ayr, Ont. First of 5 games tonight (6 team round robin). It's the funnest hockey there is. No offsides, no slappers, change on the fly, penalties are penalty shots, and everyone knows each other as we've all played together many times. Awesome.
Won't hear much from me for a bit.

It was nice to see Linden getting such a good send off. He's been the face of the franchise for 20 years (yes... including during his "sabbatical" in New York, Montreal and Washington). It just wont be the same without him.

We won all three games yesterday so I'm heading off for a semi-final game at 9am this morning. If we win we play the championship at noon.
Habs beat the leafs last night. The fans held up signs about golfing for the Leafs...oh well. Good for the Habs making the playoffs. Time for the Leafs to do some serious rebuilding.
Linden was a good workhorse. He had a fine career, and is well respected.
Off I go...

Well, we won the championship at the tournament today. Crushed the first team 9 - 0 earning only the 2nd shutout in the tournaments 6 year history. In the championship game we led 7 - 0 with 6 minutes to go, but they pumped 2 by the goaler before it was over. It would have been back to back shutouts in a four on four tournament...basically a miracle.
It was great hanging out all weekend either in the parking lot or in the dressing room (we got to keep the room all weekend) having some beers and swapping guy stories. Four on Four hockey is the best hockey ever.
I gave the convenor a bottle of syrup for the good job he did organising it.

Gratz HB! Unfortunately, I never learned to ice skate, so my hockey experience has been limited to street/field hockey and one rather painful attempt at roller hockey at a tennis court.
My fantasy team is tied in the finals 7-7 with my Canadian transplant friend. He's got Getzlaf and Selanne still to play and I'm done, since Giggy is going to be rested for the playoffs. If we end up tied, I have him on tiebreak (goals). We're tied in +/-, and unless his forwards can put up 5 PPGs or a short handed point between them, nothing else will make a difference in the outcome.
Not as thrilling as playing the real deal, but for fantasy, it's kind of like double overtime in Game 7.

Yep, its Versus channel doubleheader for me. Don't know who's playing tonight, don't care. It ain't the Bolts (1ST PICK!!!!!!) and it'll be better hockey for it.
So, I came in 2nd in my fantasy league. My opponent got an assist (which gave him 1 better +/- than me) from Getzlaf on the last goal scored in the regular season. How's that for going down to the wire?

Wow, that's close. 2nd is pretty good...that's in the money. I finished fifth this year, but made my entrance money back on the weekly wins I had.
I've got Pittsburgh/Ottawa coming up in 15 minutes or so on the CBC.

Dangit, I was going to go to bed and get a decent night's sleep for once. But I had my TV on NASN (North American Sports Network in the UK), and the Sens/Pens game is just starting. More importantly, they referenced that the Flames/Sharks game is on afterward...so now I'll probably stay up to watch that game. Go Sharks!
(Darn, Jim Hughson's doing the East series instead of the West. He's my favorite HNIC play-by-play guy, cuz of his work on the EA Sports NHL video game.)
And in the time it's taken me to post, the Penguins already have the 1-0 lead.

He's the new top-dog pbp dude with CBC now. They are fazing out Bob Cole...Harry Neale has already left for Buffalo broadcasts. Hughson's the best as far as I'm concerned. We have the same double header here. I guess you are 6 or 7 hours ahead of us. 2:30 am there?

Direct quote by me from SW chat:
"You know it's spring when it's the NHL playoffs, you're watching Hockey Night in Canada, and Don Cherry's wearing a garish jacket."
I was reading something on the laptop, looked up and GAH! (his jacket reminds me more of autumn leaves though)
Don's right...CGY may be the toughest series for SJ in the playoffs (unless they run into the Wings *again*). Every year the Sharks get touted as a Cup favorite, and while they're my favorite team they always lack *something* to get them over the hump. Even with the Sharks' 21-game unbeaten streak, I can't come up with a reason that tells me this is their year either.

I'm kicking myself for not getting NHL Center Ice this year. I find the Canadian broadcasts superior in almost every way to the US ones. Better commentary, better play by play. Some of the local feeds for US teams are atrocious. Plus, it's neat to see commercials for Canadian chains that don't exist south of the border, except maybe Buffalo (which you guys can annex, if you want. Please, take their fans.)
Luckily the Lightning have a pretty stellar broadcast team. Rick Peckham (who fills in on VS sometimes) and 'Chief' Bobby Taylor know their stuff, and it's fun to watch Chief get wound up when the officials start making bad calls against the Bolts. Definitely a bit of home team bias, but it works.

Fell asleep during the 3rd in the SJ/Calgary game. I haven't seen much out of the Flames this year (besides going to the game against the Bolts), but they impressed me from what I saw of them. San Jose is the best team in the best division in the west, and Calgary just out-manned them.

The playoffs always seem to come down to 3 things: Goaltending, team defense, and special teams. And the tie-breaker is always goaltending.

What is it with Versus skipping the Battle of the Hudson 2 nights in a row? I know Pittsburgh is the marquee team, but Capitals-Flyers can't possibly beat seeing if Brodeur is still merely human and if Scott Gomez continues to stick it to his old team. I'm not the only one who scratched my head when Gomez put on the blue shirt but he may prove us all wrong.
Calgary was scary good in the first game so I was surprised watching that score scroll during the Notre Dame-Michigan Frozen Four match. Did anyone see that? Michigan gave up 3 unanswered goals in the first only to roar back and take it to OT. Now THAT'S hockey.

They can keep skipping the Battle of the Hudson.. It's ALLLLLL about the Penguins this year! I've been waiting years (since Lemieux) for a Pens team to come along that didn't "chuck and chase" as their main strategy.
2-0 on Ottawa.. niiiiiiiiiice..
Go Pens!!

Yeah, I see the Pens going deep. But Vs. skipped that game too. Caps-Flyers turned out to be a very watchable game with Ovechkin scoring the GWG. NJ-NY was a defensive snoozer, so it's all good. Vs showed the Hudson highlights between periods of COL-MIN, making a point of "Jagr hit somebody!"
Speaking of COL-MIN, it was the first game to overtime. Last year it seemed like every night in the first round had two OT games. Need more bonus hockey!
From the seeding it looks like Pgh can only see the Broadway Blueshirts in the conference finals - be afraid if it comes to that.:O

I know I'm a day late commenting on CGY/SJ game 2, but this post summarizes it perfectly. The Sharks outshoot the Flames 27-3 in the second period but only get two goals out of it...but those two goals turn out to be more than enough. Nabokov vs. Kiprusoff, plus the ex-Sharks on the Flames makes this series like watching a practice from 2-3 years ago.
Finally, this might be the year we're glad that we kept Nabokov instead of Kipper, Toskala, Hedberg, etc.

I'm missing a lot of the western games because of the time diff. It looked like the Caps wanted to be anywhere but on the ice yesterday, very lack luster game

Yeah, I am all over the Flames. Habs-Bruins looks interesting, but I don't think the Bs have the depth to stay.
Other than those games it was a crappy day in hockeyland for me, with my hometown minors team getting swept from the league finals and the Rangers coughing up a lead and losing in OT.

Ohhhhh I'm a bitter TO today. 3:33 into the first period, up by 3-0, I was much happier. Sarich's hit on Marleau, which led to a power play that yielded Calgary's first goal, changed the complexion of the whole game. From there, the Flames imposed their will physically, and CuJo was hardly tested.
I was ready to make a bet with my cousins in Calgary on the series...I might still, but it may just be sending good money after bad if the Sharks continue to get out-worked.

So three years and Dave Nonis gets fired as Canucks GM. I'm a little mixed on it because you generally need 5 years to fairly assess the performance of a GM. That said, outside of the one Luongo deal, Nonis really didn't do much to improve the team. Rumors are flying rampant that Steve Tambellini will serve as interm GM with the organization making a play for Brian Burke after he finishes his final year with the Ducks.
Any thoughts on Avery's antics on Brodeur? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec_2oKWe2Gw) Personally, I give him major props for being so innovative. I don't agree with the NHL's stance on making it an unsportsmanlike penalty (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601079&sid=afBL8z2HT4f0&refer=home).
