A little extra hockey is fine by me! I wouldn't mind seeing an extended overtime. This playoff year hasn't had many

The bar I work at made a jankity Stanley Cup replica out of soup tureens and an oil drum. I should be at work right now; I am bad stripper. Oooh but this is such good hockey.

Sykora put it past Osgood about 60 seconds after I posted.

Good game indeed. Reminded me of Game 4 of the '96 Cup Finals. You can't beat continuous sudden death OT for entertainment.

A favorite moment of mine was seeing the disappointment on Betman's face when they won. He wanted his good ole Pens to win with that superstar Crosby. What bullshit. Speed and youth have got NOTHING on the Wing's puck possesion abilities. I had never been to an NHL game until game 2 in D-town. It was always impressive to see their handling skills on tv, but in person....WOW! And the Joe was a dream. I will be attending MANY more NHL games from here on out. May even drive to Detroit for the parade.

WallyT

OK, I was wrong. I said Osgood would beat Fleury. What I meant was Fleury's own ass would beat Fleury. }:D

ajbaer, I used to get 1/2 price tickets right outside Verizon when the Caps were cold as the ice they played on. Knowing DC, you probably still can in the fall. Verizon Center is a very nice place to watch a game - I would rank it #2 of the 7 NHL arenas I've been to. If I was a Metro ride away instead of four hours from the nearest hockey I'd be there every couple weeks.

You should go.

I LIVED at heart plaza during my visit. That was the initial reasoning for the visit. I was soooooo wasted one night I was running around asking everyone for drugs (even though I have very limited use of them). I was shocked to find out how easy it is for a nearly nude female, with large breasts, drunk to get their hands on "stuffs". Too bad it all ended up out the window....totally another story for another time :P

Three ways to improve on NHL hockey.

1. Make nice with ESPN. When the owners got greedy and left ESPN for FOX the league suffered. The NHL got a false sense of importance because ESPN devoted the time and money to make hockey matter to the larger masses. When Fox took over that all went to shit. Glow pucks and funny robots to try and draw a maybe/ sometime fan, while ignoring the wishes of the folks who have supported their team and the league for ages. Hockey had a much bigger footprint in the American sports scene when ESPN had an interest.

1a - ESPN repected the game and didn't try to turn it into an afternoon league, to fill the hole left by the NFL season ending. If NBC wants to be taken serious let them broadcast regular season games during primetime.

2. Go traditional - Screw this East / West, central, southwest crap. Restore the Campbell and Prince of Wales conferences. Get rid of the third division and bring back the Norris, Smythe, Adams, Patrick divisions. You want rivalries Gary? Make a team have to win two series against division foes before you can play for a conference championship, just like the old days. A couple years of that and you'll have your rivalries again. God save me from another Det / West coast first round series ( especially if we end up getting dumped in the first round).

3. When you score a short handed goal you should get your guy back. You can't stop them from scoring when you have a man advantage? Too bad - penalty over because of your lousy play.

A few tidbits I'd like to add to that improvements list:

4a) Return to the home whites and dark road jerseys. Dark jerseys at home is dumb.

4b)Simplify the jersey designs. There are too many outlandish designs out there

4c)Eliminate the third jerseys for all teams. It was nice once in a while for a few teams. Now there are too many all over the league.

SPLUT

I don't agree with the restoration of the division names. People nowadays have no respect for the past and the names would be lost on them.

WallyT
06-06-2008, 08:23 AM
I agree with getting rid of the third jerseys. The rest of the suggestions really don't solve the NHL's basic problem, which is that it bid player salaries into insane heights that, even after the salary cap, mean every team needs to put butts in seats for an 82 game (!) regular season so they can hope to become profitable if they get in the playoffs.

Hockey is a shitty sport to watch on television. Even in HD the picture usually shows only 7 or 8 players. You can't see the plays develop, you can't see the gaps in line changes or tell what is going to happen next.

Why is it that you can take a family of four to an AHL game, have seats on the red line 10 rows from the glass, get the kids concessions and souvenirs and still not break the third Benjamin, while it's an easy five small to do the same thing in the NHL? Too expensive for the average Wally, that's the league's problem!

Improve hockey? Go to four on four all the time. Forget making the nets bigger or the ice bigger...overtime type excitement all the time. Each team gets 16 skaters and two goalies...four units of four. Less unskilled players playing, more room and time to make plays...more scoring chances.

WallyT
06-06-2008, 04:47 PM
Pond hockey. Blech. Good defense improves the game. It doesn't exist in the current 4 on 4 OT they play in the regular season.

Could be worse. Some minor leagues are playing 3 on 3 overtimes.

Bob_Loblaw
06-06-2008, 05:32 PM
I'm all for realignment. The Canucks don't have another team in their division who is even in the same fricken time zone!

As far as four on four all the time, I'd be against it only for the fact you take out all physical play. No more hits.

And Wally, I disagree with your stance that hockey is not TV friendly. The fact of the matter is US stations have no idea how to broadcast hockey. Their sound quality sucks large too compared to the Canadian broadcasts. They concentrate too much on sounds on the ice and neglect the sounds from the fans. Games I watch on NBC sound like they're playing in a library and it makes it tougher to generate excitement to the viewer.

Lose the instigator rule. Hockey has a rep as being a bloodsport yet you've seen more brawls in the last decade or so in baseball and basketball. Losing the instigator rule will not result in more brawls. Rather, it'll result in fewer cheap shots and stickwork.

Change the point system. The two points for a win, one point for an overtime loss or shootout loss is bullshit. How can a game worth two points suddenly become three? If you're going to give a point for an overtime or shootout loss and two for a win, a regulation time win should be worth three points.

Whoa...CBC has lost the Hockey Night in Canada theme song they've used for 40 or 50 years. CTV has scooped it up. CBC will have a little competition now with a 100K prize for the composer who can come up with the new theme song. I think they should just use Stompin' Tom Connors' "The Hockey Song".

Harry Neale is gone, maybe Bob Cole is next. Ron McLean & Don Cherry might be on the bubble as well. Are they looking to totally revamp, or just having a stumble as big companies sometimes do?

SPLUT

I have no idea what the CBC was thinking letting the HNIC theme song go to CTV. How long before TSN goes after the Saturday night games and partners with Molsons?

Help me out hb. Aren't they allowed to induct up to four "players" into the HHOF annually? Larionov deserved to be in. I'm lukewarm on Anderson TBH. It hurts for me to say this but how does Gilmour not make it in? I think Bure should have as well and Oates should have garnered some votes.

And why the hell is the draft on a Friday?!

The_Oceans

I agree - dark jerseys at home, white on the road is lame in the NHL (it mirrors football, where most teams where colored jerseys at home and white on the road. Every other major sport in North America goes white at home and dark on the road).

I believe the reason the NHL flipped the paradigm is because most teams' third jerseys were colored, so before the switch that made traveling teams take both their home whites and road colors on multi-city road trips. Switching to road whites meant standardization.

SPLUT - the US national TV contract actually went FOX, then ESPN/ABC, then Versus/NBC. While ESPN was good to/for hockey, I think the ratings they were getting weren't up to par with the investment they made, which is why they didn't pursue renewal of the TV contract as fervently this last go-around. And with ESPN having MLB, NFL, and NBA contracts I don't think they have room to fit the NHL in at this time.

I thought the exact same thing Bob. Yes they can take 4 players...and yes Gilmour and Bure should be there too. Probably will eventually. Oates is worthy imo. My criteria is probably looser than most people. I believe if you are a famous hockey player you should get in.

The_Oceans; you went and made me look it up. ESPN had the NHL all to them selves for two years. Fox then got the network broadcast rights and started showing games on Saturday and Sunday. ESPN / ABC then went after all the rights and Fox was left out in the cold. It was put out there that Fox was willing to give up their rights a year early because they weren't getting the response they thought they would. ESPN / ABC had the rights until the lock out. Since then it's been Versus (OLN)/ NBC.

IMO - the NHL would be better off on a network that is willing to show weeknight games - VS or ESPN as opposed to networks who want something to plug in on a sunday afternoon. The NHL is wise, did i just say that? - to keep the Stanley Cup finals on free TV though.

The Wings sign D man Lilja to a two year contract. I now think that Brad Stuart will move on and the Wings will look to one of their own for the 4 spot on the D.

I think Stuart will resign with the Kings.
