Hey bobby, I heard this song for the first time yesterday and thought, "This must be his theme song". It's called "Hockey Song" by Vile Richard, a folk rock band outta Whitby, ON. (Note: Not a cover of the more famous Stompin' Tom Connors song.)

Grrrr, Boblo...that's HP Pavilion that Bettman's in.
Fortunately, the Shark Tank will be filled for at least two more games this season! I was banging the "refresh" on my Blackberry browser while in line for Adam Carolla's show in Hollywood...and went from "pissed" to "elated" in about a five minute span (the Avs had just taken the lead when I first checked the score, then San Jose scored two goals in quick succession to go from 2-1 down to 3-2 up). The final score was surely not indicative of how tough the game was, despite the Sharks dominating on the stat sheet.

Ahhh...it's begun. Now I have hockey every night, even if only as sweet background music.
The Leafs lost their first preseason exhibition game last night....5-0
Oh well, there's always next year.

I took a date to Blues-Stars game last Saturday, she had never been to a hockey game. We sat 4 rows from the ice in a corner. She about jumped out of her seat when there was a hard check into the boards right in front of us. Priceless. She just loved the game.
I am amazed how fast the puck can travel, can't even see it sometimes. I don't know how goalies survive.

Boyes hustles and plays hard. Hopefully his hard work will turn into goals. The Blues need scoring. T.J. Oshie looks like he is going to be a good player.
the Blues finally have a goalie - Havak. Thank you Habs.

Wow!! I'm glad to find a hockey thread here! Gonna have to jump on and represent the Deep South and my Tampa Bay Lightning!
Ryan Malone scores with less than a minute in OT to give the Bolts a win over the Habs, moving us to a 2-0 record.
You can just tell the difference in the team's play and style from last season. Steve Yzerman has brought a winning attitude here and seems dedicated to making us a successful franchise again. Probably not ready for another cup, but I think a playoff spot is a very good possibility.
And the win tonight sort was sort of theraputic in trying to recover from the Rangers winning the series over the Rays. :(

Yzerman is a winner. You have some great forwards on that team...Lecavalier, Stamkos, St. Louis, Gagne....but how's the goaltending? That's a biggie.
ETA: Leafs beat the Pens tonight and are on top of the league at 3-0
Therefore = ;D

Yeah the goaltending could be an issue. Never was a big fan of Mike Smith- guy plays too wreckless for my liking. He's a huge guy but seems sort of clumsy and erratic at times. There was talk of us bringing in Tim Thomas, who I think will bounce back this year. Brought in Dan Ellis instead, who we thought was going to start the season. Looks like it's a 1a and 1b situation for now.:-\ He had some decent numbers at Nashville, so we'll see.
He'll actually be in goal tonight against Philly, so I'm anxious to see how that works out.
BTW- how is "The Monster" looking? LOL
hockeybobby
10-14-2010, 02:24 PM
He shut down the Pens when it counted and got them the win. I thought he looked good overall. Giguere's the man though for now. They'll probably put the Monster in every three or four games to keep him sharp.

Teams getting a point for losing in OT is ridiculous. I don't understand the logic.

I look at overtime and the shootout as a gift to the fans. It makes the overall experience more exciting to give each team a point for the tie, then contest an extra point for the paying/viewing fans enjoyment. You must admit, it is exciting. The point for the tie is a reward for the 60 minute effort, and a nod to tradition imo.

From a competition point of view, I would prefer going back to the 5-minute 5-on-5 OT period, with no point for an OT loss, and leave the game as a tie after 5 minutes. The point for the OT/Shootout loss actually creates a perverse incentive for the teams to have a regulation tie (except perhaps late in the season against a division or conference rival, where one really wants to deprive the opponent of a point).
Last year there were 301 regulation ties (out of 1230 games - almost 1 in 4). In 1982-83, the last season with no overtime, there were 127 ties out of 840 games - about 15%. Some of this may have to do with increased parity in the league and a decrease in scoring; but everyone knows that the best way for a mediocre team to get into the playoffs is to get alot of regulation ties. I haven't the time to do a statistical analysis of games tied at the 15:00 mark of the 3rd period. If my theory holds, since the awarding of the point for the OT loss, teams would play ultra-conservative in the last 5:00 of a tie game to ensure the one point while conserving the chance to pick up 2 points with an OT or shootout win. In the pre-OT days, a team "playing for the tie" in the final minutes of a tie game would sacrifice a chance of taking 2 points.
Other leagues such as the KHL have addressed the issue by awarding 3 points for the regulation win, and only 2 for the OT/shootout win. While this complicates the standings, (W-OTW-OTL-L), there is no perverse incentive to take the game to OT. By going to OT, one loses the chance at 3 points.
The current NHL system stands in stark contrast to soccer leagues - a sport where an excessive number of ties is considered a problem. In soccer, one awards 3 points for the win and only 1 for the draw. Thus a teams is better off playing for a win (with the risk of the loss) than just settling for the draw - one win and one loss is better than two draws. In NHL hockey a team will almost always prefer two regulation ties to one regulation win and one regulation loss.
That said, I think the 4-on-4 OT and the shootout are great for the fans, they are exciting, and with the point for the shootout loss, one doesn't feel "burned" when one's team loses a shootout, but from a competition point of view, the shootout win shouldn't be worth the same as the regulation win. So I wish they'd adopt the 3-2-1-0 point system used in other leagues.
Incidentally Ken Holland recently floated the idea of a 4 minute 4-on-4 followed by a 4 minute 3-on-3, and getting rid of the shootout.

What the hell was Rick Rypien thinking?
I heard on the radio that all the fan said was "way to be a professional". Why does it always seem to be Vancouver? I know I am bias being a Minnesota fan but really?

Ok I feel I need to say the fan that was pushed is being a complete d-bag! He is seeking legal representation (what a candy ass move). My reaction if I got pushed like this fan did would be "That was the coolest thing ever!"
I seriously hope that this is NOT the highlight of the Wild's season.
