View Full Version : You GUYS.... mini rant.

Or maybe YOU GUYS are taking something small and meaningless and turning it into a huge deal. It's a non-issue IMHO, but if you feel so offended by something, correct people when they say it instead of crying about being called masculine.
PCQ.... I understand that you feel it's not a big deal. I'm not bashing you for your opinion.
I like posting thoughts on SW.... hearing other peoples' thoughts... voicing a few of my own, etc. I really do feel as though I have learned something from this thread... most don't find the phrase offensive as I do. It's interesting... it "makes me think".
In my first post I mentioned that I DO correct people when they use the phrase "guys". I don't think I'm crying about it. It just makes me a bit confused and sad. Am I not entitled to feel things the way I do?
I just don't get where the anger is coming from.

I certainly wouldn't consider it "crying" about anything. Unless of course you present it that way.
Even if you aren't going to change anyone's speech patterns, correcting people at least provides food for thought.

Okay there... Mr. Machismo.... somehow I'm not surprised.
My name has nothing to do with my stance on this. Considering you say you are just looking for other people's opinions on the matter I hope you treat us with the same respect that you yourself would want to receive.

I'm sorry, I wasn't referring to the policemen/firemen thing in my comment on level. Just the use of "guys" as all encompassing.
Sure, language (more so parole than langue) I have no idea what this means. And I am really not sucking up when I say that I'm a little turned on right now.
is determined by hegemony. I cannot think of any language that does not take on the male you plural pronoun when it is a group of people that includes at least one male.
Well I don't know that many languages; but from what I do know, I agree. But I think that is... you know. A problem. Male hegemony. Etc. I don't regard it as neutral just because it exists.
English being as gender neutral as it is, I believe, leads native English-speakers to be more sensitive to gender assignment.I'm not sure. http://www.alterego.montreal.qc.ca/eug.htm

What about going up to to groups of men, or mixed groups, whether you are M or F, and going "What's up, bitchezzzzzzzz?"

I'm really not sucking up when I say I'm flattered!
Saussure (father of linguistics and semiotics) divided language into two parts: Langue and parole. Langue refers to the rules and structure of a language and parole to the acts of speaking and writer - what the speaker/writer does and produces using the langue. It is the basic notion of the structuralist model of language.
I meant that the way in which we use language (word choice, speech patterns, etc.) is more influenced by social powers and suggested "norms" (hegemony, like you mentioned) than the actual rules of language.
Well I don't know that many languages; but from what I do know, I agree. But I think that is... you know. A problem. Male hegemony. Etc. I don't regard it as neutral just because it exists.
Nothing should be considered neutral just because it exists, that's for sure. Although isn't that the conundrum that is constructed by hegemony?
Mildly off topic, but piqued my curiosity: Why do you neuter a male but spay a female?
I'm not sure. http://www.alterego.montreal.qc.ca/eug.htm
Hmmm, that's interesting! I'm going to have to check that out. Thanks!

Pretty much how I feel. There are so many bigger things in this life to get worked up over.
How about about I get your opinion on this: If 6 of your friends (4 women, 2 other men) were hanging out with ya and a waitress stopped by and said "Hiya girls!" You wouldn't bat an eye? Really? Like... seriously, you wouldn't be the least bit confused?
Lather, rinse, repeat... for YEARS. LOL.
Let's say you were miffed and posted on a public forum and.. and.. and... (wait for it!!!)
Then, DJ UltraFeminisma posted that it wasn't a big deal. ::)
Oh c'mon!

So... I'm the only one who got the irony in someone with the name "Machismo" declaring that misgendering people is "no big deal"? It's funny. Not a personal disrespect. And I actually don't get the stripperweb double standard that you guys think she's ragging on. Like seriously - I have no idea WHAT the post above this one means.

As Jenny said, its ironic, but it has no relation to the DJ name. Its not "obvious" its assuming based off of little knowledge and disrespectful.
And no, I wouldn't bat an eye at it, in fact it has happened, and I really didn't care.
Well, I'm out of this thread, adios amigos.

When I lived up north I said 'you guys'
When I moved down south I switched to 'ya'll'
And in French, masculine plural is dominant over feminine plural ( ils > elles) , even if it's only one guy in a group of girls
