are you talking about ice-hockey?
Yep. Only the special super expensive channels carry it here.

^^
are you talking about ice-hockey?
Yes, ice hockey. It's the National Hockey League...it's on tv here. It's our unofficial national sport. The official national sport is lacrosse, which is a particularly manly, fierce yet elegant team sport. Were you thinking field hockey?
I'm sorry if I'm interfering with your fest planning, I hope so much you have a fun time with that and tell us all about it later. :)

yeh i thought maybe field hockey coz thats really all thats suitable in australia with our climate. we do have 2 ice-skating rinks in melbourne - one in oakleigh and one in ringwood but they are crappy.

I'll bet if you were to go to one of those rinks late on a weeknight, you'll find a couple of Canadian guys playing some pickup hockey with their Aus buddies. It's in our blood or something.
Just as an aside, Susan Wayward did a little show for a hockey team just before they went out on the ice in a tournament. She wrote a NATO about it on the blue side a day or two ago. Ha, this is the 3rd time I've re-told her story...to me it's such a cool story. I just got back from a tournament up north and would have loved a pre-game stripper inspirational show. ;D
oh yeah, she coined a new phrase: Hockey Bukake :)

Just found out Semester 1 exams begin 6th June, so mid-May works out better for me than end of that month.
EDIT- Oh, the 25th. That should be okay. For some reason I thought it was the 29th.

Remember, it isn't just Lysondra and you Flickad... there are other people who will be trying to come to this event :P ;)
So far it looks like coffee n cake late afternoon ... dinner early evening ish.. and then open for whatever activities (no pressure)... i'll probably do the coffee n cake and dinner then leave as i will most likely be going monday (to come back home).
Sunday May 25th - First Ever SW Fest within Australia!
New Zealanders and anyone else around at the time is welcome to join the fun!
Melbourne CBD.
Coffee n Cake in the afternoon ... Dinner in the evening ... then it's open whatever else will happen...
We all agree on this generally?
I do realise this! We're just tossing around options for betweenies, we're not trying to take over or cramp anyone's style. Since others made suggestions and let their needs be known, I hadn't realised that equalled toe-stepping :P.

OMG .. there is a reason emoticons were used in that post.. jeez! :)
I winked ;) and them put my tongue out :P which means I was not serious! I was poking fun..
Anyway, I doubt it will be JUST 5 people by the end as there are heaps of other Aussie and non-Aussie SWers who may want to be in on this event yet not post often and/or just be lurking watching this thread....
So we need a place where we all can meet up at a certain time and not have to actually 'book a table' as we really won't know numbers until the time of the dinner in a way.
Make dates, times and places... just make sure the places are flexible enough for more people to join in last minute.
In re the aussie accent... go to http://www.snapvine.com/goldcoastgirl and you will be blessed with my very Australian accent.. I keep getting asked if I was raised in the country (due to how aussie I am in a way). I've been on the Gold Coast all my life pretty much
Lysondra

We already said dinner was at 7 on the 25th... we're just waiting for exact numbers and a closer to the dat to book the table.

Hey that snapvine thing is COOL. You have a lovely Aus voice GCG, and you are very beautiful too. Is that a big tattoo on your lower back? Is there a picture of it in picture post or some other thread?
Anyways...thanks for that :)

Canadians seem to lurrve our accent particularly. I met one Canadian online who was so enamoured of the Aussie drawl (though I'll admit it's not really a drawl) that he bought an international phone card and rang me several times just to hear mine (he was all 'wow, you don't sound like an ocker'- too much Crocodile Dundee, methinks- the city accent here is quite different to the outback one, particularly in people who've been university educated). We pretty much talked about nothing on the phone, though- we used to do our regular chatting on msn.
Personally I can't see much that's special about the Australian accent- it sounds 'normal' to me (duh) and is also very flat. To me a cute accent has a bit of a lilt to it, like the Irish or Scottish one. Though I will say that my heart leaps (in a good way) when I hear an Aussie accent in an American movie, TV or radio show/interview. It's like a little piece of home, and I can kinda hear what's special about the accent when it's the only one of its kind in a sea of American ones. In my daily life, though, just about everybody has an Aussie accent (duh again) so it sounds like a default accent to me, like a 'nothing' accent. The flatness of it (in terms of lacking much of an intonation, like a twang or lilt) accentuates that for me, I think.

Um..ah.. what tattoo? I have virgin skin.. thanks you for the compliment about my accent.. I'm told that constantly even by fellow Australians
If you are referring to the black GString I was wearing .. it isn't a tattoo! haha.
As for Snapvine... yeah it is cool huh?

Oh, i'm sorry...I guess it was the lighting of the picture.:-[
It seems I've liked the Aus girl accent forever. I've also felt a sort of kinship with Australia in general, as a Canadian. I think it's because of our Commonwealth connection, and the fact that we are sort of unique, middle nations. We've stood beside each other in many crises' over the years too.
I think you have better weather than us. Our winters suck. :)
GCG: I kept your little talky site as a favourite for when I need a fix!!
jaizaine: I'd love to visit Australia too... It's something like 24 hours of flying !! can you imagine that? You'd have to stop over for a day in Hawaii or something just to keep it reasonable...

I think we (canucks) have no accent...at least that's what some visitors have said to me. Except for our Maritimers out east...Newfoundlanders especially have a crazy unique accent and way of talking. If you heard them talking to each other you'd be like WTF? :O

hahahaha... I guess someone would have to make a mic recording of all of us SW girls going to the SW fest so that everyone can hear us.. except me of course.. as I'm already "talking" on the web via Snapvine.
Anyway, I guess someone should just post a "reminder" to everyone four weeks from the date ??? Then a week ??? As this little thread is definately going to get buried amongst everything else.
Unless someone can be so kind to "sticky" this thread in The Lounge for us?

HEY BABES!
My tickets have been bought!!!
On another note: is there any sweet doll that minds sharing a room or giving me a couch to stay on? I should have money by then but with my latest money issues, I'm not sure. I'd like to be safe and I plan on working at LEAST Tuesday-Thursday leaving Friday morning.
Anyone want a hyper active sarcastic girl geek with them? I'll fix your computer!!

I'd let you stay with me hun but I'm living on campus at uni at the moment and literally only have a room the size of the average bathroom so we probably both wouldn't even fit.

Avalon is the smaller airport between Melbourne and Geelong, about 30 minutes north of Melbourne but there are regular buses from there into the city. Tullamarine is the major domestic/international airport actually in Melbourne.
Darcy Foxx

virginblue seems to be my best bet. can fly return for $110 and that goes straight to tullamarine, i think.

Waaah, I wanna book a flight. I dont think I should plan that far ahead though in case it all goes arse up /-:
I second GCG on King St Backpackers though - its cheap and handy to the city.
I also quite like The Ritz Backpackers in St Kilda. You can get a double or twin room to yourself there for about $40, its just share bathrooms and although its not luxurious accom its safe and clean. Im sure there are more of the same.
