my dr said that if taken correctly, someone with true anxiety will not become addicted to xanax. who knows.. just saying what he said.
I don't know whether or not that's true (I've seen people with true anxiety become addicted to xanax, though I would also say that those people weren't taking it correctly), but I do suspect that panic disorder was absolutely a misdiagnosis in my case. I do have some social anxiety plus a stresshead personality, but I don't think that translates to having a disorder and being in need of medication, as some people with crippling anxiety issues are.

ok, so i'll tell him that he needs to up it. will he give me another prescription right away do you think? or just tell me take 2 until they run out (he gave me 30 .5mg pills) and then we'll go from there?
I would just call and let him know that .5mg did nothing and that you'll be doubling up until the script runs out, at which time you'll be back in for either a script for 1mg Ativan or a new one for Xanax.
Oops... posted link in wrong thread. Htf did that happen? lol

that may be true of people who take it as spot treatment, and not every day and who do not have a history of addiction problems.

if you're taking it every day, you arent taking it correctly. you know? even with a history of addiction i think it makes sense that if you take it as a spot treatment, the way it's meant to be taken, and you truly have anxiety, you won't get addicted.

well for some of us whos doctors prescribed it everyday, it isnt our fault. i am livid that my doctor did that to me and now i am addicted to ativan. luckily im on the road to not being anymore as i have a psychiatrist not a gp anymore for my mental health issues.

of course it's not your fault. but just saying, that even if that's what the dr prescribes, that isn't how the drug is meant to be taken. so that's different.

If you take benzos enough on a continual basis you will become phisically adicted. This happens with benzos. You will know this is happening when you have to increase dosage. This happens to some people after a few months and some it takes longer. I took kolonopin on and off for sleep and anxiety and I did not take it daily maybe 3-4 1 mg tablets a week for around 6 months. Well I didnt have any for around a month and I went through minor withdrawl. Your body will become dependent on benzos and you can die from benzo withdrawl. If you take benzos for years it can take almost a year to feel normal again. There is a good website that tells you all about benzos. I believe its bezo.org uk. Thet have done more research in the U.K about benzos. Just do some research. Benzos are very dangerous. I now take maybe 3 or 4 .5 milligrams of kolonopin per month and only when I need them.

ok, guys, please dont turn this thread into whether or not you can get addicted.
the point of it was to have one place where everyone listed what they are currently taking, since that information was so spread out before.
it can be helpful to me while i'm trying to find the right thing and helpful for others in the future.

Talk to your doctor it might not be right for you and most likely isnt .They usually tell me that if I feel deppressed or having suicidal thoughts to call them right away.

^^ What the deppression? I never got depessed after I took xanax I felt calm and really talkative later
Britt,
Ask your doc about it because I know that it takes a couple of weeks for the meds to start working properly. Sometimes you even have increased symptoms of whatever it is you are feeling.
When I started Lexapro, it took about 2 weeks to start feeling good/ panic free but in between those two weeks I had some of the most AWFUL panic attacks. :(
Hopefully its just your body adjusting to the med. If it goes on for a couple more days, just phone the doc and ask him. See if it is normal to have those kinds of reactions.
Hope it starts to go away soon. Shit sucks. :(

im about to get my period, too, so that might be part of it. my mom said it might just be the medicine wearing off.

everyone i know gets headaches after. yuck. and the really talkative would be bad for me because that leads to my panic attacks.

I have been on 10 mg of Paxil for the past 9 years. I am for the most part a normal, happy, well-adjusted person. This was not always the case. I used to suffer severe anxiety attacks on a regular basis. Now I manage the occasional mild to medium strength attack. I have no desire to ever quit taking my meds, although at times it does bother me to be dependent on something. But then again, diabetics are dependent on their meds for survival too.
I can certainly understand your desire to take a spot treatment of xanax or ativan, but it might be worth considering a daily, long-term treatment. Paxil/Zoloft/Lexapro/etc. are very successful at treating chronic conditions. It is less likely that you will abuse them. It takes time for them to build up in your system - it's not like you can just pop a Paxil and feel the results.
I'm not very quick to recommend Paxil because I think taking any drug is a weighty decision and not a quick fix. But Paxil has improved my life immeasurably. And from what I've read you have been struggling with these problems for a while and are somewhat prone to substance abuse as a result. Don't rule out daily medication as an option.

Oh, please don't take what I've written the wrong way. I'm not saying that you will abuse xanax/ativan or whatever. I know that you don't intend to take it everyday. I was just trying to show you another option. Because spot treatment really might not be sufficient. But only you and your doctor can make that decision.

Go with Xanax. I never took anything for my anxiety and social phobia but since my husband passing I am on Xanax and let me tell you: You don't feel anything! There is only serenity on this little pill.;D

My Xanax script expired many months ago, and without insurance, I'm reluctant to renew it. So I'm on Absolut.

I take xanax and it works great. When i was got on it it made me very sleepy, but after a while that went away. It's definately not for everyday. I only take it when i work (2-3 days a week) or if I have heavy symptoms of anxiety. I took it everyday for a few months, then started to take it less and less. I have gone without it for weeks at a time and never experianced any kind of withdrawl symptoms, but I don't think that is typical.

It doesn't make me want to cry, but yes sometimes I just can't wake up. For some reason, Valium doesn't do this to me. I can always get out of bed refreshed and not in a funk.

Never feel depressed when I take it. It makes me feel like I could give a fuck less about anything, just completely indifferent.
