Eh. That's probably what it is, but I'm not losing any sleep over it one way or another. I do hope this jackass winds up homeless on the street in winter dying of E. coli 0157:H7 (a very nasty way to go), but whatever the reason behind his business failures or whatever happens to his money, eh, I don't really care. It's not worth pursuing.

Somehow that doesnt surprise me. I tried not to be involved with the management too much, but even in my discussions RE attracting business it DID seem like he wasnt even THINKING about making money, the value of his meals, drinks etc. Too smart for your own good, Yek!
The same thoughts occurred to me, but i was like "eh, your being too sensitive".
I've often wondered where he's getting the money, and since he goes out of his way to AVOID making money at Casa Diablo, I even asked his manager point-blank if it was a money laundering operation. She laughed and insisted that it wasn't, and said he didn't care if he made money at this point because once all the customers were hooked then he could make money later. I pointed out that he was hooking customers on not spending money, and when it came time to jack up the prices his business would leave, and I again mused that I thought it might be a money laundering thing. I was "fired" before my next shift (which was the day I'd planned to quit anyway).
So yeah. I say money laundering. Where it's coming from is anyone's guess.

Yep. I didnt want to say anything to anyone because..well..its not my news to tell..but I was PISSED that they fired you. One of the best and he voluntarily got rid of you??? Pure BS. That makes me think even more that its a money laundering operation.

It was the day I was going to quit anyway, so I was relieved. Be happy for me, not pissed! I love where I am now. Besides, the story of the manager breaking up with me on my voicemail is one of the best work stories I've got. :D

That story DID make me laugh heartily!!
So where you are now is good? Will this be where I'm working when I get there, my Portand manager? Will I be working days or nights?

Which would you prefer? Days and mids are easier to get scheduled for, and I prefer them anyway, more laid-back and we can go out at night after work!

Is the money the same? What can I reasonably expect to make?

Oh oops, I got distracted and forgot. Will PM you now.
That article and the comments are hilarious! Reminds me of Pee-Wee Hermann sneering, "I MEANT to do that." LMAO... like I said, may it sell for less than half what he owes, and may he contract E. coli 0157:H7 and not be able to afford treatment. :D

Ha! Here's a good one!
i noticed that all of the bad reviews were posted a while ago and no recent ones. i had to try this place out for myself. when introduced to the owner and extremely pleasant staff, i was told that the tavern had recently hired a new cook. and they must have gotten all of the kinks worked out because my food, the music and whole entire experience was amazing! and i definately wasn't alone. the place was packed! as far as questionable ethics with the owner go, if you call caring so much about animals that he fails to see how people could eat them questionable then go right ahead. being friends with one of his employees, i know that he treats/pays his staff really well. he may be on the eccentric side, but his passion for animals is his ultimate driving force. godspeed pirate's tavern!

Also, where the fu'jack in that lot is anyone going to park a big truck?! I can barely park my compact car on that hill. The idea of parking semis in that lot is pretty damn hilarious to me.

Good article, but sheesh I am so tired of hearing about how we strippers are so exploited.

Here's a glowing post from WW:
"dw writes on Mar 27th, 2008 1:50am
ole johnny has been the laughing stock of portland ever since pirate's tavern started and everyone found out what a douchebag he was. the vegan community dropped him like a bad habit, and for good reason. anyone that thought casa diablo would last, obviously wasn't paying attention at how johnny runs his businesses and/or treats people. everyone knew it was just a matter of time before he tucked his tail between his legs and ran off to another city...maybe to get his religion going again. good riddance johnny."

The folk over at the Portland Mercury tried to claim that the news of CD's pending sale was broken by the New York Times. (http://blogtown.portlandmercury.com/2008/03/sex_and_veganism.php)
Feh. Actually, the story was broken by PriscillaC, right here in this thread, six days ago! She was the one that dug up the evidence that the vague craigslist posting was, in fact, Johnny Diablo's "meat on the pole not on the plate" place.
I set 'em straight.

^^^Sarcasm? Me can't tell.
I'm sure the traffic, if any, will be minimal compared to having StripperWeb linked on the Wikipedia page for "Striptease", anyway...
ETA: Oh, not sarcasm. You edited. Got it. Sorry.

^^ Probably not sarcasm. The people who read the Mercury for news and participate in its site's daily flamewars are some of the worst human beings Portland has to offer.

I get your good intentions, but we don't really need a bunch of people reading the Mercury's blog coming over here. After all the trouble everyone went to to keep SW out of the WW story.
ditto. please no SW linked to mercury.. pleaseee!!!
sun child
03-28-2008, 02:33 AM
Yeah, please don't tell journalists or bloggers about SW. The WW reporter was going to include SW as a main part of her article. It took two impassioned letters from SW members to stop this from happening. Casa Diablo might have been on a desperate press run, but SW does not need press or attention from lurkers we might very possibly know in real life. Not trying to pick on you. But let's keep it in the family, kapeesh?
I think it's crazy that Johnny had an article written up in WW, a part in a show done by The Discovery Channel for some environmental show on The Discovery Channel, a NYT article, a spot on the local news, etc. No Portland strip club has ever garnered so much attention. So I find his claims that it wasn't a long-term business idea very dubious, very dubious indeed.
I don't want to be associated with Casa Diablo.

I was pretty unhappy when I saw that link on the Mercury, lunar. I went into the script and was relieved to see it didn't actually link. I actually tried to go back and edit every single one of my posts in this thread.
I don't like the idea of any extra internet attention drawn to this thread, other than maybe Johnny collecting golden quotes for his all-vegan internet scrapbook.
I'm comfortable with who I am, but I don't need everyone knowing where I hang out.

WOW, I'm totally blown away by all the press coverage of Casa Diablo. I have to agree, I highly doubt Johnny initially intended to sell the club so soon after opening. It seemed like he had high hopes for the club picking up steam and becoming very popular when I talked to him.
It also bothers me that he claims the club is being sold as a strip club, that the dancers and employees will not be shafted by him selling it, when in truth the club is not being sold as a strip club according to the real estate posting. That just isn't fair.

Well, he certainly got his wish...except NOTORIOUS might be a better description.
