I prefer manual to automatic, too. At first I was sure that I wouldn't ever get the hang of driving stick, but now I hate driving manuals.

It took me about a week and a half to comfortably drive my car after learning to drive manual. My biggest problem was getting to know the clutch on the car and getting familiar with when to let off.

Every clutch is different, and learning to start off on a hill can be very intimidating. Once you get it, it's no big deal. Remember that it's okay to stall. In fact, if you don't stall at least once a week, then you're probably riding your clutch too much. All that said? A chick that can drive a stick? SCHWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!!

Okay, I wasn't TRYING to make a sexual euphamism, but I won't be offended if you find one :-D
Well, you didn't have to try hard. Men talking cars always gets me off. Even if they don't know what the hell they're talking about, 'cause I can't tell. :D

Why use breaks if your downshifting for racing? I don't get it.

You should have someone who knows how to drive a stick go with you. IMO it's easier to learn in a truck because it will have lower gears and some you can even get it going without giving it gas. Just let up on the cluch slowly and it will go. Driving a stick for a while will make you crazy when you are on upgrades. Yes while you have the clutch in the car will roll and then you have to make sure you leave room between you and the car ahead of you.

Oh my God what if someone is right on my ass??

The only big problem with a manual trannie is that on a steep hill with only a pedal, not hand brake, and with ignorant, impatient drivers in rush traffic, it is a real frustrating challenge until you get really good. This is where a handbrake is much, much better, along with a lot of practice on empty, hilly roads.

Another thing about manuals is that, even if you enjoy shifting, in stop-and-go driving or areas with a high stoplight stopsign densiti, it becomes tiresome real fast. Especially if you're trying to get to work fast and you just can't stop to eat your taco.

One more thing, if you plan on towing something, the automatic is a much better deal because it can pull better and longer without a clutch friction plate replacement.

Apparently in some countries they require by law drivers to use the handbrake on hills to prevent the car from rolling backward. I've tried this technique, but since it is not my normal method, I am not comfortable with it. Still, I do use it on very steep inclines. It takes practice to do it smoothly.

Also one last tip I learned long ago -

I keep my hands on the steering wheel as much as possible when I drive, not resting on the shift knob to look cool (like in the movies). I move my hand to the shift knob only long enough to shift, then back to the wheel. I suppose if you are racing and anticipating a very quick shift it would be different, but for most everyday driving there is quite a lot of time between shifts. Also read your car's manual. I've owned one where the manufacturer indicated that resting one's hand on the shifter can result in premature wear and tear. This probably depends on the design of the shifter, transmission, how much force your are applying with your hand, and how sensitive it is. I've read some articles that suggest it is not true, while others argue yes it is. In any case, with your hands on the steering wheel the argument is moot.
