Do not use poison. They will just eat it, die and rot in some unreachable place of your house, and stink up the place.
Instant kill traps are they way to go :( sucks, I know.

Christmas Island is hell on earth. Just eat the damn things! That island needs air drops of I Cannot Believe It's Not Butter and garlic.

Lysondra if you let the cane toads roam free youre indirectly a bigger cause of death. I used to not like the idea of killing them - and yeah Im not thrilled about it now either, but their enviromental impact has been devastating.
I couldn't agree more.
Think big picture not small "right in front of me now" picture.
You allow that one cane toad to live and you contribute to MORE deaths than just that one death.

haha...the title made me think for a moment that your husby was up to no good lol.
Rat traps are humane...they kill quick by breaking their necks or crushing their skulls. Also, they don't wander off all poisoned and die somewhere out of reach where they can rot and stink the place out.
You have to find the spot where he's getting in and block it up securely or else some other critter is going to come in.

I can't kill things. I can't even pick out my lobster/fish at a restaurant. I can't doom things. I FREAKING CAN'T. :( How did this come about me?
Anyway, Jai... I say no-kill trap and the RSPCA..if they kill it you have no idea that way.

Anytime there is a mouse (God forbid, a RAT!) in the house I automatically think hantavirus.

This is off topic but I work in a fine dining resturaunt bartending at the moment, and there are mice everywhere!! Gross!! Yet interestingly enough I'm not disguested enough to stop eating the free oysters, shrimp, Chilean Sea Bass and other goodies.

hi, dont know if you've found a solution, but i agree that poison isnt good as it could die somewhere hard to get to. i've had rats and mice. i use a hav-a-hart trap and put peanut butter on it. they are suckers for peanut butter. put the trap where you last saw the rat, leave the room and turn the lights off. as far as setting it loose (if you cant bear to kill it), you can take it to a friend who uses them to feed a kitty and put them together in a sealed off area to duke it out. you could take the rat and drive somewhere and set it loose in an abandoned area, open field or woodland area, away from where people are.
you should worry if you get bit. most wild rats run and dont just come up and bite. if it does come and bite, you will need to be worried about rabies and get shots at the hospital. this is why it's a bad idea to let the rat run loose.
try and find the hole where this rat is coming from. block it with steel scouring pads and duct or electrical tape.

thank-you. animals in Australia do not have rabies though, thankfully.
No sign of the rat for days now.

What is a cane toad?

^Cane Toads are an introduced species, and they breed like mad and eat everything. They're large, and they produce a toxin from glands on their back that can kill dogs or other animals that pick them up in their mouths. Did you ever hear about getting high by licking a toad? That's what these guys are. They're apparently a huge problem in Australia. I saw a show on Animal Planet and there were groups of guys going around killing them because they're such a nuisance.
Aren't feral cats a huge Aussie problem as well?

cane toads eat our native wildlife such as frogs and small mammals. im actually not sure about whether feral cats are a problem here.
