I know what you're talking about! It's called the "golden ratio". You can calculate it from things like the curve of a fern or a nautilus shell and it's also in the Fibonacci sequence. The golden ratio is 1.618... (it goes on forever). what you're talking about is just its inverse -- you can see 1/1.6 = is roughly equivalent to 2/3.

Leonardo DaVinci used it in his sketches of human proportion...

However. I wouldn't stress about it -- no one has actually proved it makes people more attractive -- it's still just a theory and certainly doesn't apply to every outfit! I think the most important things are still VERY, VERY basic. Wear things that flatter you, make eye contact. Etc.

I read about how the golden ratio is honed into technique by artists and musicians, in terms of interval/spatial relationships (ex. color, composition, tones, etc), and when observed, is very aesthetically pleasing. Masters of painting have perfected the golden rectangle within their subject matter. Golden interval in a scale (a major sixth, i think?) sound most pleasing to a universal audience, of various cultural backgrounds and musical preferences.

That said, you have a point about outfit ratios... It must be in the natural subconscious, to enjoy the beauty of 1.618...

The majority of models in men's magazines ARE very thin or super fit. Yet, they have a bit of a booty and some boobs as opposed to the emaciated appearance in female magazines. There are curvier, thicker girls in men's magazines so long as they don't appear out of shape, but it's speckled throughout. Playboy definitely has bigger girls more often than Maxim, FHM, and Stuff.

At least these models are bigger than models in Vogue or Cosmo, but just because there are some thick girls in a men's magazines doesn't mean all the models are. And yes, photoshop usually always takes place before the magazines is distributed. To not believe so is just plain denial.

Sure. And that's why so many fair-skinned women feel compelled to go tanning. ::)

This quote from the British study (linked in this thread) may explain it:

"The analysis of white women found that those with the darkest complexions were likely to be wearing the least clothes, hinting at the association with sex and danger that the colour subconsciously triggers.
In contrast, women with the most pale skin were more likely to be conservatively dressed, living up to the innocent and modest ideal."
