When we first moved out here (to PA)... our kids were younger, so back then they needed a baby sitter. It has been a couple of months and I was jonesing for some Mexican food, so the only place I could find in the area was "Chi Chi's"
We dropped the kids off at the baby sitter, a 14 year old girl, but we knew her mother who was also home to help watch our kids. Told them we were going to Chi Chi's. I will never forget the look on the mom's face. She says "Do you know that is Mexican?", like ewww... Mexican???
It was at that moment I became fully cognizant I wasn't in CA anymore. Dinner was truly craptastic. I remember commenting that Taco Bell is better then this shit. Yes, we know it is Mexican. That is what I want. Spicy, tasty, Mexican food. What we got was more like hamburger helper wrapped in a store bought Tortillas with Tabasco sauce.
Fortunately, even Chi Chi's went out of business here. Awful.

Yeah, Chi Chi's was the lowest of the low. They are gone around Boston as well.

Even here, with a large Mexican population, most of our mexican restaurants are pretty mediocre, gringo mexican buried in yellow cheese, outside of the trucks and a couple of taquerias. There's a new place that serves Oaxacan specials on the weekend. Their moles are so far above anything served in a restaurant around here, and yet it's such a hole in the wall I fear it may not survive.

x, someone in your family should learn to cook.
It's not that hard. Pick up a cookbook by Rick Bayless or Diana Kennedy. Make a special trip to a nearby city to stock up on authentic ingredients.
Then DIY.

Oh we do, and cooking is not really something that needs to be learned since it's quite simple to do. Follow the instructions... not exactly hard.
But that doesn't stop most of us from going to restaurants, even if we can do it ourselves. It's not entirely the point of why I go anyway. There is a lot to be said for letting someone else do the cooking, just enjoying the experience in some else's place.

So you have joined the Mahdi Army. Homeland Security will hear about this.
What can I say? I heard their chicks were hotter...
Mrs FBR whipped up a great Taco salad last night. I never ask her to cook so this was a big surprise. Or perhaps maybe an omen that she knows and I should behave myself henceforth. I mean, I felt that way when she handed me the bowl, a diet coke, eating tools and a napkin, all with a smile and while I was vegged in front of the TV and not doing any of the weekend family chores.
I know we are not that much into introspection here generally but I thought it was, I don't know, weird.

Perhaps you should start to behave because just as the old wives tale explains you should always be good to those who purchase, prepare and serve your food for a reason.

...mmm... tacos....
Yes, good. Choose your side carefully, LJ. The Mahdi Army is watching.
I had tacos from Taco del Mar for lunch today. Fish tacos. Soft flour tortillas. With rice and pinto beans on the side. For a chain, TDM makes pretty good fish tacos.
Has FBR signed on today?

I want fajitas! Beef fajitas where the beef is marinated in tequila and Pico De gallo.
Appetizer: Mexican Army hot sauce and tortillas, with maybe some queso.
Maybe:
Chilies Rellenos, either Ancho (dried Poblano) or Poblano.

I'm totally down with marinating the steak for 24 hours at least.
Guacamole = Home made of course, avocado, a dash of my favorite salsa, and a teaspoon of ranch dressing.
Red Peppers + Green Peppers + Onion - heated fast, quick, with red pepper, black pepper, a bit of salt, butter, the meat.
Tortillas.... I found a brand that is close to home made, and near perfect when heated fast in the oven.
Add cheeses, and sour cream...
Deliciousness...

I love adding some habeneros but yep, revolt!
Try a bit of ranch dressing (the real stuff, no low fat) in the guac ... adds creamyiness and flavor.
I keep thinking, home made tortillas would make it perfect.

I like my guac - simple... avacados, some tomatoes, onion, EVOO and a hint of cilantro... season to taste.. But adding ranch sounds tasty...
I had my fave mex food yesterday- fried chimichangas ... yum ..!!! Mite go again tomorrow!!!

Not at all. Tone doesn’t always carry over well on the net. I myself misunderstood a post by Jay to me not long ago. I felt like a over sensitive chic stereotype when I found out what he really meant. LOL!
My post to you was a devilish joke. Hence the devil smiley. But gosh now that you said you had some uneasy physical reaction I sure hope I wasn’t on to something! Probably nothing to worry about…I mean it was a taco salad after all ;)

Interesting theory, except... the previous instance I was the one who placed the order. The common variable is the "experts" (the professionals) at Taco Bell.
Maybe Taco Bell needs to do like In and Out Burger and have a Taco Bell University? In and Out has one... because apparently with a choice of about 3 items total, their employees need to go to a University for training?
By the way, I taught my cat a new trick the other day... I wonder if I can teach him the difference between a Taco and a Burrito?
