I work in a freaking bar. Everyone is having loads of fun and acting silly. If I don't have one or two I feel like a stick in the mud. After those two I can "fake drunk" to match the inebriation level of my customers. Works llike a charm. And if anyone has a problem with it: Piss off.
agreed.

^^^sure, it's fine and dandy that you are fine and dandy with drinking to do your job. However, the OP is asking for advice on how to work sober, so I don't think this is the place to defend your/people in general's drinking at work. It's not the point. I don't think anyone is trying to judge anyone else's actions, but whatever.
I don't ever drink and have a fair amount of social anxiety as well. In fact part of what led me to develop my alcohol dependence problem was that I had to drink to be comfortable. Now that I don't drink anymore I have to fake it every day when I work. I fake the confidence. A big bubbly smile and "hi how are bla bla bla" works well to put customers at ease, cause they think i'm friendly and approachable, which in turn helps me calm down. Even if you don't feel like smiling do it, it will make things easier by setting the tone.
You can also fake buzzed, I do this when guys want a party girl. "I'm already over my limit, I can't order another drink, you get one and then we'll go dance" or whatever. Doing this helps me get into the mindset that I'm that fun girl, and helps me have the confidence to "ask to grind on your dick for $20" lol.
If you're scared to approach, which I most certainly am, you can use your stage sets to see who seems interested in you. Keep an eye on those who come up to your stage or make eyes at you, and target them instead of approaching customers cold. I use my stage sets to hustle my ass off because it's easier for me to hustle someone who has already shown interest in me by approaching first. My club is fairly stage oriented so this works well for me.
Um. That's all I can think of right now. I hope it helps in some way!

^^^ Excellent points! As far as the stage goes, I relied on adrenaline. If you like to perform by nature, using your own adrenaline helps. For some people this can backfire though - like if it makes them move superfast for instance instead of seductive.
You can also try asking the bar for a glass filled with water instead of alcohol. And just pretend. Holding a glass that's normally used for alcohol might help put you into the "right" mindset.

This thread makes me sad. And it seems stereotypical of "what a stripper is."
You know the other thread where the sister is concerned about her sister who might be stripping when she's saying she's waitressing? If I were her reading this thread in particular, I'd be a concerned sister too.
Meh, I'm no one's role model. I also don't claim to represent anyone but myself. I'm not a big drinker, but I'll have a few at work. Any drugs taken at work are those prescribed to me. Any other drug use I keep outside of work.

Any job would leave me dependant on a substance. But I suffer from panic disorder, agoraphobia and severe social anxiety. Throw in my insomnia, and I'm a basket-case at any job.
to clarify: clearly i didn't mean medication , but alcohol/drugs

It's so strange because if I have to go onstage without a drink, my knees shake. I can't even walk, I'm terrified. However once I get that drink in me, I'm a goddamn professional up there.
^yay! Glad I'm not alone on that one. Forget pole tricks sober too. I swear I have pulled off some amazing shit I never even knew I could do when I had a good buzz going on. I try to do them sober and can't cause my whole body is so shaky with nervousness. The closest I ever came to falling off the pole and getting hurt was when I tried to do an invert....sober.

Hmmm when I work im sober most of the time. I drink once in a great while .I have an anxiety disorder and I haven't been on my meds for a good 2 years(Didn't have insurance, just recently got it again)and my anxiety is really bad .So I wouldn't use a anxiety disorder as an excuse . I think you should just go sober for a good 2 weeks you'll learn your away around it on how to seem happy and how to fake it without alcohol.

I'll be honest, I drink at work. I have very little desire to work sober. I bank with a buzz and I am very happy to do so.

Honestly, I've said this before and I'll say it again...
How many girls at work do you know that don't drink? Most girls do drink at work because :
a. it is a little akward being naked in front of strangers
b. it does help people relax.
c. we work in a bar where people want to buy us free booze...hmmm.....
I don't think there is anything awful about having a couple drinks every night at work. Hell, I have a couple glasses of wine while I'm bartending. As long as she isn't getting plowed I really don't see the harm. Her drinking is on par or less than that of the average college student.

High 5! I worked for months sober and for months under the influence. I prefer the latter, so that is what I will stick with.

^^^
Nothing. I (mostly) worked sober from 18 to 21....then started drinking at work at VIPS because, well, I like booze....worked at a no nooze club (The Admiral) and didn't drink....then when I first moved to Vegas I didn't drink because I was a bit intimidated by the club and didn't want to be at all "impaired".....
I just like to drink, to be honest. I have more fun when I drink at work, and make more money. I don't "need to drink" but I like to drink if that makes sense lol....
Just being honest!!

The results are in:
5 drinks later and Lizzie here DECREASED her earnings by over SIX TIMES. But she's still laughing about it.

 I get really hyper when I drink. Probably annoyingly so; why do you think being inebriated made your money decrease?
(I'm not really supposed to drink with my medication, so I get kinda manic if I do lol.)

'cause I didn't give a shit to the point of being stupid. There's my usual cheeky 'don't give a shit' attitude and then that. Plus I dropped my money like 235773875x7248724/234 times and spent about two hours of the night searching my bag for it before I found it on stage. ::)
Edit: Also, drinks are expensive. D:

Exactly. I can't crack jokes around people I don't know. Most of that is because I'm so sarcastic that I say sarcastic things in seriousness and never let up. So obviously if you don't know me you're not going to assume I'm joking. I guess I could REALLY try to put on an act, but faking bubbly would wear me out FAST.
I also can't seem to focus if I'm not buzzed. I just seem like one person in the club. When I'm drinking It's more like me and this person alone, I don't get distracted.
I drink at work. I don't get trashed like some of the girls (having to be carried out, pissing in the DR sink, etc.) but loosen up with a couple of shots before I hit the floor. Otherwise, I'm an asshole.:O
