No David Bowie :)?

Actually, it's the trite lyrics and poor musicianship that bother me. Fluffy hair and tight pants? Not so much.

Ohhh lordie...we need to feed you some Ray Toro guitar solos. Pure metallica and Slayer influenced work. Then you get Frank Iero in backing him up on it and it's like, guitar solo heaven.
Kevin Thrasher from LoveHateHero is incredible too. He looks like a taller version of Prince, plays with the guitar behind his head, and soundchecks with Flight Of The Bumblebee.

3-Leg: Please take a moment to notice that much of the time I have my tounge quite firmly lodged in my cheek. Furthermore...I no longer own a turntable (sadness) and I have no clue who that Ummagumma album is by. Five bucks says my mom didn't ever own it anyway since she is more of the hippy age than the 70's prog rock type.

It should be noted though that my personal pick for greatest album ever does credit Rick Wakeman (pardon me as I slash my wrists at the overblown silliness) in a couple of instances. But it's so fucking good that I am willing to ignore that fact.

I didn't vote BECAUSE I have my own best albums in the entire world.. and I refuse to play fair :snicker:

1. Lou Reed - Animal
2. Slayer - Reign in Blood
3. Bad Brains - Against
4. Leonard Cohen - Death of a ladies man
5. Stars - Heart
6. David Bowie aka Ziggy Stardust - Diamond Dogs
7. Alice Cooper- Billion Dollar babies
8. Bruce Springsteen- Born to run
9. Pat Benatar - Live from Earth
10. Faithless - Reverance

There we go. Much better.

I chose not to vote.

Isn't it obvious?! Madman Across The Water by Elton John can never be beaten. However, Sing The Sorrow by AFI runs a close second.

:'( Having known the latter for going on 10 years (back when David was David...into misfits and didn't bleach his skin..:cough:), their better work was "very proud of ya". Hell he will even say that. However, sing the sorrow was made for the masses and IMO is what brought them from dudes that sang at shows and covered Minor threat songs to who they are today.

BUUUUT I'll leave that rant alone.

I just read this entire thread and I think I lost a bit of my soul. And no it wasn't because of the back street boys either lol. Shit I have Debbie Gibson and Lisa LIsa and the cult jam sitting here on my Ipod. All are equally shameful and awesome.

Awwww, an old-schooler! Mind you, I LOVE older AFI too, back in the days of the devil lock, lol.

The thing with STS is that when I was competing with colour guard, that album was my pre-show ritual. ALERT: THE FOLLOWING IS GONNA SOUND EXCRUCIATIONLY EMO. The thing has a way of opening up my heart, of kind of making all the emotion in my heart explode out of me. There's a moment in the Girl's Not Grey vid when white flower petals come exploding out of Davey's chest; that's EXACTLY how that entire album makes me feel. It's the most beautiful thing on earth.

Even when I'm up on stage at work doing GNG, I STILL feel like my heart is going to explode from the beauty of it. Nothing on earth can ever make me happier than when that final minute clocks in and it just sort of blows up with passion, beauty, and emotion.

Boho: Innovation?! They pioneered the abuse of Howard Benson as a primo emo producer! Furthermore, NOBODY else is staging massively pyrotechnic concerts where they play their entire new album straight through, in full costume and makeup these days. They are putting the glam and showmanship back into music for the first time after Kurt Cobain ass-raped rock in the name of wussiness! MCR has also pioneered in the art of musical mass-therapy. Go to a show and I will be amazed if the venue isn't an inch deep in sweat and tears by the end. Kids don't just go to their shows to see a concert, they go as a religious expiriance...religious expiriances arn't seen in rock music anymore.

Well, well, there's quite a bit going on in this thread, isn't there?

I love Korn, one of my favorite bands of all time. I also love Thievery Corporation.

Can't stand Tiesto, or the vast majority of his stuff, anyway. His imitators are doing much to destroy one of my favorite genres.

Cannot listen to Elton John at all, not for 5 seconds, I'm out the fucking door. Or Billy Joel either.

Never could get into Pearl Jam or Kurt Cobain, or any of their thousands of clones. Whining and groaning makes me want to go find a better party, every time, or break the stereo into a million pieces. Miles Davis blows those motherfuckers away (whoops, bad pun, sorry Kurt).

Some music most definitely takes longer than three minutes to make a point. Ever listen to Beethoven?

We are going to have disagreement, that is obvious. Music is like that. But let's try to respect each other, and allow for differences in taste. And let's not willfully piss each other off, please.

The question that needs to be asked, but cannot easily be answered: what are people going to think of this stuff in 200 years?

Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc. should be on the list, and will likely be remembered long after Madonna has been forgotten.

My favorite CD of all time (right now, lol) is probably one a friend of mine who is a techno DJ mixed. It won't sell millions of copies. But it has helped me when I was going through shit. And I got the Message...

"Musical mass-therapy?" Seriously?

As far as showmanship is concerned, apparently you've never seen the Flaming Lips in concert. Or My Morning Jacket. Or The Dresden Dolls. I could go on...

I'd rather gouge my eyes out with spoons than go to a concert with a bunch of people who think MCR is a "religious experience." There's nothing appealing to me about standing in the sweat a tears of a bunch of kids who grew up in suburbia with too much teenage-angst on their hands.

But... to each their own. If that's what you're into, that's what you're into.

QFT. I always found it odd that MCR got as huge as they are now. And I do their merch for shits sake lol and I still stand by that. And I swear to god at every show I'm just astounded by the kids. Trust me I think it's awesome and it's a great supplement for my income when they are on midwest dates. It's just...surreal? I don't know what term(s) to use on that. I consider 2 of them close friends including their wives and one ex gf. It's just strange. And I'm not saying this to be an asshole at all. Believe me. I feel out of the loop with that entire genre of music. I try to compare it to music/shows I was into between 12-16 and I don't think I was that loopy for anything. I even ask my 13 year old and he's like "eh I don't know it's girl music" lol

But at the same time, thank god for sad angst filled fans because it keeps me entertained, paid and my boyfriend in business. Viva mass marketed music!!

I wonder what people will think in 20 or even 50 years from now. I listen to Fred Astaire and it makes me giddy and I try to imagine life back then, when women looked like ladies and men were swarthy scotch drinking humans.

I don't know if we are generating music these days that actually has impact with it's beats. But then again that's when you get into what is "music"? Without Bach, mozart etc we wouldn't have music these days. And in some circles you can hear it's classical influences. It is slowly getting lost on the youth. And that's where I go into the rant about the need for music classes in our high schools.

Not to quote Nas but "Save the music Ya'll"

I don't know...Like a Virgin changed my life. Of course, I was about 8. ;D

Off the list...I'd have to pick the Beatles.

Off my list:
The Cure-Disintegration
Depeche Mode-Violator
Any of the Led Zep albums with a number.
Another vote for Sgt. Pepper's
Jeff Buckley's Grace
All of Sophia Ashley's list
I'd pick a Prince album, but I can't decide which!
Dark Side, of course.

I don't understand the emo at all, though the debate is funny. ;D I saw Tiger Army once, by mistake, opening for The Damned. SO. WRONG.

Word.

I just had to google MCR to find out what that meant.*shakes my cane at emo kids*

^ That's why i didn't add Prince. Because what album do you go with lol. Clearly Purple Rain is amazing.

Personally Emo is any different than the cure etc BUT I think what we see more of and it's weird...are super fans. I've only seen super fans for Micheal Jackson shows growing up. I promise you, every night there is some girl sobbing at an FOB or MCR show. Everyone laughs at it behind the scenes but it's surreal to watch.

I'm totally a super-fan of the Cure. Since I was about 14. It's pretty unhealthy, I know. But they are, actually, great musicians, even if it's not everyone's thing. I kinda like that when I go to the shows, it's all us oldsters. Talent>making teens cry.

Im a cure fan as well. Best show I ever saw them do was the one with Radiohead and Depeche Mode. talk about a-mazing. I think that was 96? Whenever Depeche mode had their last big album come out.

Now if there ever were a show to cry at, it was that one. Just because Thom Yorkes voice is beautiful

Just have to say that my fav albums of all time are from The Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. ;D

Of all time? I betcha Anton himself would slap you for excluding Their Satanic Majesties Request ;). I will grant that DiG! is one of the greatest rockumentaries ever, though. It is never, not ever, not funny. And when Gilmore Girls did a tribute to it with Hep Alien and Joel guesting, I was rolling on the floor.

No Velvet Underground and Nico? No Trout Mask Replica? Hell, I would have thought someone would have thrown in Daydream Nation. C'mon, people.

Off of this list I'm going with Like a Prayer, certainly Madonna's best, as I am a Revolver woman.

If I really made a list I would have to go by decade . . .

I've seen the Dresden Dolls live, I've met Brian and Amanda...MCR's Black Parade tour blows them out of the water and I should know, I attended all three Black Parade tours. Brian and Amanda are both very nice people, don't get me wrong...it's just that from a showmanship perspective, MCR is incredible.

I'm really getting rather sick of trying to make the case for MCR. I'm one of thousands of Rmy members who can honestly and openly clam the line, "MCR saved my life." I will love them with all my heart forever and always for that. You guys may not understand what it's about, but I assure you, every band on earht wishes they had fans as passionate and fierce as the MCRmy.

As for favourite Cure albums...Pornography, hand's down. My first Cure album, my favourite Cure song (The Hanging Garden) the best of the crop.

If you truly believe that MCR "saved your life," then you likely need some intensive pyschological help. I'm saying this in earnest. Not poking fun.

Also, I recommend that you stop pretending to be an authority on all things music. It's possibly the most unbecoming quality of super-fans, and I almost fell into that sort of behavior (making statements like, "I assure you...") with Radiohead before I realized that I was making a complete ass of myself.

Listen...The reason I DON'T need intensive and costly psychological help is BECAUSE of MCR. The line "saved my life" generally translates to "made me see that somehow life isn't completely futile." Therapy does the same thing, only it's more expensive. I'd appreciate you not insinuating that I'm a psychological danger based upon a POSITIVE statement.

Furthermore, music is a passion of mine in life. So long as you wern't a music major, I can virtually garountee I've read more books on a range of musical subjects than you have. I would never go so far as to say I am an authority on ALL things musical, but I have a fairly keen grasp on a wide range of musical subjects. It's impossible to be a perfect expert in anything, but I concider myself fairly knowledgable on a fair few genres.

Well THAT'S a shitty thing to say.

People come in all forms, who are YOU to say what's a legitimate life saving form? Some people will be 'saved' by God. Some by animals. And some by emo bands ;)

I think it's all wonderful. We need people to be happy, 'save' yourself any way possible!

Ahhhh, the power of music....you know kids its all about bringing people TOGETHER not making them fight....right (well....unless its one of those skin head nazi bands and then...well there just morons, on this I think we can agree). This may make me sound like some what of a hippie (blah) but I sort of have an admiration for anyone who LOVES music...any kind of music...even if I think it is shitty. If they are truly passionate about the music they listen to then I have respect for them.

My thoughts are that a love for music is part of what makes us human. Anyone who can truly appreciate some form of music is a better person for it.

Now that I have typed this I realize that it has nothing much to do with the thread...sorry I had a few too many cocktails. Thread jack over.

Music in general saved my life. I may dislike Emo, but if someone else likes it then who am I to argue?
Of the choices Appetite is the album that got to me the most, but some of my favorite songs simply repeat a phrase(I like short songs, sex and violence)so you can tell I have a short attention span.

Hello, first venture into the music section.

To me, to be a 'best' album, it is one that you can put in and listen all the way through without skipping a single song. (And not a compilation or greatest hits lp.)

Rush: 2112
Rush: Moving Pictures
Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of the Moon

All I have to say about Moving Pictures is that for almost a decade I only listened to Side 1. One day I flipped it over and liked Side 2 even better.

Side 2:
