i grew up in florida. i thought i hated it until i moved away to the west coast. now i can't wait to move back. the west coast is definitely not for me. i feel a little out of place. i get the impression that a lot of people from other states think they're better than floridians (comments like "oh, i'm sorry" when i tell them where i'm from. that sort of thing.) while it's not perfect, most of the time it's too hot, and yes, the bugs are yucky, florida's where i'm from and i'm proud! being away for a few years has given me a better appreciation for it. i miss the people, the thunderstorms, the beaches...i finally realize why people go to florida on vacation!
i really like ft. lauderdale, key west, and sarasota especially. orlando and tampa not so much.

yay! you are moving back? if so i cant wait to hang out again.

If you don't like Florida, then move or don't go there! If you have time to sit and talk shit about another state, then yours clearly is not amusing enough.

honestly i think alot of it is jealousy.
i'm not talking about you girls that live and work in s.fla. if that is the main experience i had i'd hate it too.

how often would most of you northerners give anything to be going to the beach or doing ANYTHING outside in dec or feb? i can not imagine the cold, the gloom, the snow. for 5 or 6 months of the year. yes it's hot in summer. so what? everything is frigid a/c here. bugs ehh. nothing a good pest control person cant get rid of.

when i first moved into my apartment, i had a huge roach problem. you know what fixed it? hot shot ant and roach spray applied thoroughly to every door, window, and crack in the wall. people with roaches either don't use spray or they don't use it according to the instructions. every now and again i'll find a dead one on the floor under a window, and that's it.

If you want a big city, try Tampa/St Pete. If you want medium sized city, try Ft Myers. If you want small town, try a place like Cocoa Beach.

i wouldn't call tampa bay a big city, but i certainly like it here. and i love cocoa beach. gulf beaches are such shit compared to the ocean. and cocoa is still relatively small, so it's not as obnoxious as so many other beach destination towns are.

in tampa bay, cost of living isn't bad at all. i've got a 2 bedroom with a washer and dryer in a safe neighboorhood, convenient to downtown (by car) and the interstate. my power bill has only been really high when i blasted the a/c without changing the filter often enough. in the cooler months, it hovers around 40$ a month, though, and i think that's pretty good.

we've been really lucky during hurricane season here too. never really been hit in my life (and i hope it stays that way), and the storms that come through don't usually knock out the power. progress energy (in pinellas only i think) is really good about fixing outages.

the only thing i don't like about it is that a lot of my favorite bands won't tour this far south. i'm taking a trip to atlanta, raleigh, and richmond in june to catch a couple favorites. gonna make it a working trip, though, as expensive as gas is.

i've been thinking more and more about moving to one of the carolinas, but only for a couple years, cos this is where i want to own a home and live my life. it's a really great place. i just like exploring new places.

I love florida. I live in sarasota, and ya, it's expensive, but I don't want to move at all.

ps- sarasota is about 45-1.15 from tampa, it's nice to be able to go there for a day, but not to live there.

i love sarasota. st pete is a lot closer than tampa. 30-40 min drive, and traffic is a lot less likely to suck on the way. when i was a kid, my aunt lived there. i love visiting when i can. and i'm a snob, so i love the snobbiness there. is that wrong?

I personally loved growing up in South Florida. I didn't start dancing down there. I waited until I was in college and living far, far away in North Florida! :D My husband, on the other had was born in Virgina and has lived on both coasts and in the Philippines, due to his father being in the navy at the time. I know he misses the cold weather. I can't wait to leave Jacksonville. I will miss my family in West Palm and Fort Lauderdale, but I can't wait to get out of Jacksonville. My husband and I are planning on leaving behind the crazy bible thumping hypocrites, the up-tight laws on exotic entertainment (Did I mention the JSO are complete dicks to strippers. Yes, I am bitter about a ticket I got for charges I never did. >:( Yes. I took it to court and had the charges dropped for all those wondering.) I really don't care where we go, as long as it is away from rednecks and bible thumping morons. I am tired of these idiots ruining it for the rest of us decent human beings. Here is hoping I like cold weather! :P

Central FL blows, especially Lakeland/Winter Haven all those BS towns. There's nothing to do in those places so meth and teen pregnancy are rampant. Orlando is a crappy place to work, but Winter Park is ok. Tampa is kind of run down, but they do have some good shopping areas.

I guess it's just not my culture. I hated it there when I lived there. Bugs, hurricanes, pretty rednecky in most places unless you live in a ritzy area.

Though I did like Vero Beach. But it's small, and the closest club is an hour away.

Ok, so I see the thread is a little old, but everybody is talking about all these bugs, snakes, gators, insects/mosquitos in Florida....please....Florida will not hurt you! You can EASILY get dengue (break bone fever), malaria, yellow fever, chagas diseas, torcelo (forget what this is called in english, but basically a bot bug bites you and lays a super fat maggot thing in you that you have to squeez out like a pimple! EWE! Yes! they can lay the maggot ANYWHERE, i've seen some nasty in person, as well as worse documentation on the web! Ewe, ewe, ewe!) papalamoya, and MUCH MORE.

You can get these things EASILY in ANY tropical location (aka mexico, entire carribbean, warm areas of central/south america, india, africa, australia, any tropical paradises or islands!!! (only the states in HI, and FL have these problems under control that literally affected many millions a year!)
Mostly spread through mosquitos, but also other sand fleas, horseflys, bot bugs, and other insects....you get seriously sick, and all these diseases above are parasitic (however you sp. that)

I would def. stay away from shady looking, or even most fresh water regions in FL though, just as I would if travelling in central america, where they are common (crocs though)....you just have to be aware and respectful, and you will not have any probs with snakes, crocs, etc....bugs though....are a little harder to control!!!! BUT we are safe in the states from many diseases that affect, and even cripple and kill millions every year.....from tiny ass mosquitos! FUCK MOSQUITOS! ....and this is coming from a creature loving vegetarian girl who safely escorts ants, bugs, spiders, and recently, a couple cute mice, out of her house.

WOW, all those things about red necks and people talking to you in spanish are true but not if you live between surfside and hallandale on the east side. Boca is really nice too! I LOOOOVVEEE living in South Florida (coming from a girl who lived in NY for 15 years). You just have to find a nice neighborhood.

Tampa, Sarasota and all the other northern towns are just boring. I dont know what I would do to myself. There's nothing to do there!!!! Maybe it's nice to spend a day there but not to live permanently. I will not be able to live anywhere else after living in NYC and Miami. It's just not the same!

yeaaa... I like living in s.fl.
I was not born here... but I have lived in miami most of my life. I've been to orlando.. tampa.. and they are so boring compared to miami.

If you live in the kendall area.. then yea it is all spanish people that don't ever bother to learn english. But living in broward. or even north miami(like sunny isles area) it's really not that bad. I don't speak spanish and I do just fine.

I love the beaches... night clubs... weather....I never really had any bug problems. I can't imagine living anywhere else.

Damn.... I was warned about the bugs before I moved here. Just put the roach traps around.... problem solved (at least for me it worked). I don't go near the lakes looking for gators. Yes it is hot and humid in the summer, But absolutely georgous from October till May.... I'll take the trade off of never picking up that snow shovel again! Can someone pleeeease tell me where to go dance in Tampa.... hell I'll even drive to Sarasota! Need to make at least $200 a nt. I tried Penthouse in Tampa and it sucked $60 a nt isn't dancer $. I know I keep asking but the traveling thing for almost 3 years now is getting really old! Dont mind nude at all....actually prefer it.

Rude people everywhere

Everyone has either a top 40, mainstream style or is ghetto fabulous

rare to connect with people on a mental or intellectual level

only things to do are party, shop, and go to the beach

People are dumb. period.

very superficial culture

education and work ethic has no value (at least not compared to up North)

a surplus of con artists and dead beat dads move here from across the country

This is so true of so much of Florida.

I am really starting to like Key West though, it's nothing like the rest of the state..

Never been to the Keys..a new friend I just met is a 'snowbird' he goes there every year. It sounds great, & also much different from the little I do know of FL.:)

Key West is not perfect, but compared to the rest of Florida it is, lol!

Hard to get any real shopping done here, so I go online. Real Estate values are grossly inflated and haven't come down nearly as much as they should in this recession. I pay 1,000 a month for a studio/loft apartment which is pretty steep--but I can easily afford it, it is right downtown, and it is a beautiful loft (or would be if I cleaned it more often).

People tend to drink way too much, the reputation for that is well-deserved. And a lot of the tourists act like people who don't have to worry about their reputation, it is true. :D

But just walking down the street is so relaxing, in a way that I have never experienced anywhere else, and I have traveled a fair amount.

Also there are people here from all over the world which is really cool. The average couple walking down the street is as likely to be speaking Czech, Russian, or Portuguese as they are English. Or any number of other strange languages. It's like a gateway to the rest of the world, not like anywhere else in the USA.

It does get pretty hot in July/August/Sept, hotter than Daytona or Orlando--but I'd much rather be hot then, than freezing my ass off most of the year like I did in Maine or Chicago.

An old thread dredged up. But I have to say I love Pasco County. I get down there twice a year and the over all experience is pretty amazing.

So where is the happening part of key west?

I never strayed far from Duval st and AIA except once and all the houses were run down and roosters were everywhere!

How awsome.

Could a dancer survive working 2-3 shifts a week?

There have been times when I considered moving to the Keys or at least keeping Key West as a place on my list of possible cities to live in one day.

People seem pretty warm and friendly in Kew West compared to my part of FL.

The good-looking hustlers seem to do fairly well working 2-3 shifts a week here, but right now is the slowest time of the year, except maybe the week of Christmas. Most of the top girls take a month or so off in the late summer.

There are other areas that are cool other than Duval St. but that's where most of the excitement is. There's 300 bars on the island, probably less than half are on Duval.

There are rundown areas of Key West to be sure--but most of the houses are really old here, so if they aren't taken care of, they look bad pretty easily. OTOH there is more beautiful residential style architecture here than anywhere I've ever been, though less of the contemporary style of course.

The roosters are everywhere! And they never shut up, they don't go by the normal rooster schedule. They crow and cry at 4 AM on my way home as much as at any time of day. It's funny, actually, I kinda like them. And all the baby chicks running all over are so cute.

There are a lot of cool parts of KW as well as some run down parts. But the whole island is only 2 x 4 so the good outweighs the bad parts! The shopping sucks and everything is way overpriced like most islands, but the vibe is great! You might make a living on 3 days a week, but I'd plan on working at least 4 if you are going to live there since the cost of living is so high. But the clubs are laid back and generally easy to work at (whenever I've worked there I've always worked 6-7 days a week with little problem..I was tired for sure, but the burn out is minimal since its not as stressful to work)

My ATF restaurant is in KW too...I think I'll have to make a trip down soon since I havent been in months and I miss it!!!

djoser, I don't know how you've managed to stay on the rock as long as you have. Great place to visit but unless you're loaded or grew up there, you become an alcoholic pretty quickly. It's like living in a very pretty small town that is near impossible to leave.

Djoser
09-23-2009, 05:21 PM
Good point--I warned a friend of mine who is trying to recover from alcoholism to stay away! He was thinking of moving down here.

I did start drinking a bit more but it leveled off after a while. Now I go out a couple times a week and sometimes get tipsy. But I've never been a really heavy drinker.

It is a very small town if you leave out the massive numbers of tourists and partiers from Miami, etc.

10,000 residents, 300 bars--thats one bar for every 33 people! Granted those bars would go under without the tourists, etc. But yeah it really is a tiny island considering it's worldwide fame. I was surprised when I first got down here.

Nonetheless it can be hard to get accepted in the clique of true 'Locals', though the better looking dancers never seem to have trouble in this respect. :D Because of the kind of work I do I am in with the night people for sure.

Definitely not for the city loving people, but I like it as much as anywhere I have lived. If I quit or get fired (in this business you never know!) I will stick around a while more before looking for another club.
