I remember having a favorites folder with about 60 sub-folders in it all chock full of links for bookmarks because some bits of info wernt easy to find online 10 years ago and you had to search for ages to find and if you didntbook mark you might never find it all again.
I rarely have need to bookmark these days.

Its actually quite special being part of the first generation of comercial internet users when you think about it, seeing how things developed or didnt. That will never happen again.

when I was 12 I made the username ericka013 so that chat room boys would think I was older... And I'd be like "I'm 13" and the boy would say "I'm 16" and the half an hour later I'd admit that I was only 12 and he'd admit that he was only 15! LOL

I had a pretty long internet friendship with SARCASTICJOE - our birthdays are on the same day and we emailed each other every year until about 5 years ago.

I used to go into the Aerosmith chatroom through Sony and my computer didn't run on java and therefore my screen had to refresh before I could see the new comments, and everybody was like "why are you typing so slow!!??"

Text-based e-mail - pine. *shudder*

Ahhh.... those were the days. :D Used PINE from college.

I met my first real boyfriend on a dial-up local board. The best one lasted over 6 years, and we're still good friends!

My first username was "Wolf". Then someone hacked that and I made "Fox" real quick so I could still log on to complain. Everyone who'd met me decided I should use "Fox" more often because it fit me better. *embarassed giggle*

Keep in mind, that I was a nerd in school. Thanks to my peers, I thought I was ugly and worthless until this board at age 14, where people liked me for my personality since they didn't see pics of me. Then I went to a meeting of people from the local board and found my niche! I started growing my hair long... started becoming the Vera you all know today.

My dad wouldn't let me be ReformSchoolGirl (which is extremely accurate and he knew it) so I was SpikeChic16, and met some dude in a Yahoo chat room that lived in college and was an English major, and we exchanged "written erotica" via snail mail. I was 14, wonder if mine was any good....:D

listening to their midi files

Woooo!!! Remember how it was like the biggest freakin deal ever to get a picture online? I used to post in this Nirvana msg board, and I fully credit it to setting my crazy life path for the last 8 years bc of one person I met. Thanks, Kurt!

Hahaha, I remember when I was 12 I got this random email from some screenname I didn't know, it was like "Hey, I tried to call you the other day. You weren't around. Call xxx-xxx-xxxx and ask for Diane. ;)" I got kind of freaked out by it. So my best friend came over and I showed her the email and we decided to call. Turned out it was the Fuck Connection!! Hahahaha we started panicking and hung up immediately because I was scared of my parents seeing the phone bill and knowing I had called a phone sex line!! LOL

I remember ICQ and when napster was free. I also remember Lycos and MSN chat rooms which also have gone into the coffin. I remember everyone having screen names lIkE tHiS in which every other letter was capitalized as if that made it cool. I remember going into chat rooms and the standard chat was

a/s/l?

13/f/oh.

cool, u like limp bizkit and korn?

Ahhh.. the memories...

I love Nerd to God[ddess] transformation stories. Sadly, it turns out the proper path does not involve programming as a career. ;D

I fear, Lestat, that you have not done the right thing with your life after school and moved to one of those towns where computer nerd=cool guy. Like Boston. (I'd imagine this would hold in other tech towns as well.) One of the sauve-est, gets a lot of action-est guys I know is a programmer. And he is not alone. Go where the nerd girls are. Move east, young man. Or far west.

I was Jewel*insert some random number here*. AOL was like magic to me. All I did was cyber. I was actualy one of those people who dropped in randomly and asked that in chat rooms, lol. I also had some female friends that I gushed about *N Sync and Backstreet boys with. :) We sent pictures and stuff. I was just amazed that I could sit at home and talk with other people through a computer. Just AMAZED. Shoot, I remember how friggin' awesome I thought that "windows" thing was. Omg, so much easier than DOS! I remember having to teach my dad. :)

However, if I still had to dial up every time I wanted to sign on, I might have shot myself by now. :)

I kinda miss people's crappy and flashy geocities shrines to their current obsessions. Like a whole page dedicated to Rob Lowe or the Care Bears or whatever, with some jinkidy midi file embedded in the page.

Oh, and the era of the camgirl. Like Britt from texasdigital something something (can't remember the rest of the extension). And Michelles wonderland and the whole non nude modeling trend.

ETA: Holy canoli. I just went to check out the texasdigital one to see if it's still around. I remember these same photos from 1998? 1999? jeesh....

omg i forgot i used to access the internet threw WEBTV. Ya they had there own chat rooms and everthing lol.

LOL I used to have WebTV too-around 1999 or 2000. It sucked! It was soooo slow. I was never real big on chatrooms-they bored me. I was more into playing games and looking up music, TV shows, etc. that I was into.

I remember I was 9ish and I went to my friend's house. He was rich and they had a computer with the internet on it, which was amazing to me. When his parents stepped out, we went to www.sex.com; we were still looking at it when we heard them coming up the stairs and tried to close it up but kept getting pop-up and after pop-up of naked women. It was near Christmas so I remember they were all wearing Santa hats or reindeer costumes or something. They walked in and we hid in their bathroom closet but of course they saw the porn on the computer and found us.

About a year later, my brother bought his own computer, and I was on it whenever I could be. Then, circa 2000...online MMOs. Diablo II, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online...a few of my best friends come from playing those games, I'm actually going to meet an MMO buddy this summer, it will be the first time I made an effort to meet someone from the internet in real life.
