Eric, I agree guarding classes can be beneficial...but I would only recommend them to an experienced dog owner who has experience personally training large, aggressive-breed dogs.

For owner who is just having their first dog, or their first large/aggressive dog (as the OP sounds), I would recommend staying away from all of the guarding techniques, unless they have regular access to a trainer to help teach THEM how to work with a dog.

NEVER try to "guard" or "attack" train yourself unless you happen to be a certified instructor. And BEFORE you even think about having YOU and YOUR DOG so trained make sure he or she is a MULTI-LEVEL Obedience School Grad.
There is "Puppy"; "Sub-Novice"; "Novice"; "Advanced" and "Utility". My two guard trainees were both Grads of Novice with top marks BEFORE we went to "Guard School" which was MUCH more intensive and time-consuming than Obedience classes. 3 times a week for 2 1/2 to 3 hours vs. once a week for Obedience. Home practice is a must but with "guard/attack" it's usually not too practical to practice "hit" and "break". "Watch" ; "Patrol" and "Make friends" - yes but NOT the other two. For that you need a geared up "Stranger".
NEVER, EVER practice extreme techniques with family members or friends. NEVER !
