My cat is tearing up my house despite the fact I have scratch posts everywhere. I was strongly opposed to the idea before but am starting to consider declawing... anyone want to offer their thoughts on declawing? HHL?

I'll bite - declawing is like amputating every finger at the first knuckle. Don't. Learn how to trim the claws, and do so regularly and 90% of the problem will go away on an adult cat. For a kitten, an adolescent, or a cat you can't trim often enough, get softpaws. http://www.softpaws.com

i think its silly how everyone says its sooo awful. both mine are declawed and they are FINE, HAPPY cats. i felt guilty but my first baby tore a hole in my box spring and climbed up in there to hide and we couldnt get him out. so that wasnt really optional. then when i got my 2nd one i got it done so she would never be able to hurt jasper. its not like you didnt try other things first. but.. how old is your cat? mine were both babies when it was done.

Wally, I had the same thought regarding the amputation of the last digit of the paws. I trim his nails weekly but my carpets and couches are still being torn up and I even have gashes on my glass kitchen table and on my walls. I have scratch posts all over my home but he's just not interested in scratching them anymore. A water bottle to discourage the behaviour doesn't work either since my cat is a freak and loves water. I just don't know what else to do? I looked into Softpaws before but the reviews I read had them falling off quite easily which would defeat the purpose of getting them in the first place.
Britt, he just turned one last month. I have friends who have had their cats declawed and they are happy cats. In their case and in mine, they are 100% indoor cats with no desire to venture outside. I dunno... most people say if you're gonna have it done, get it done when their young as their recover time gets longer as they get older.

yes the younger the better! mine are both indoor cats as well. my first one was a bit older than the 2nd, but still under a year. we dont know exactly how old since he was adopted but the vet said around 6 months. the other was 3 months. when it got time to do the 2nd one i was thinking that i really didnt want to do it, but i just went ahead with it bc i didnt want her to ever hurt jasper, like i said. it was a sucky decision but its not the worst thing out there.
look at it this way.. your cat has a loving home with an owner who loves him and takes good care of him. it could be worse. you cant obviously keep on having your stuff destroyed and it seems like youve been patient and tried a lot of things.

I'm sorry I just don't agree with declawing and my cat is and I feel horrible.
What is declawing?
The term "declawing" implies the removal of the claws, but it is a misnomer. Declawing is not merely the removal of the claws. Rather, it is a series of amputations. The last bone of each of the ten front toes is removed, and tendons, nerves, and muscles that allow for normal function of the paw are severed. An analogy in human terms would be cutting off each finger at the last joint.
Declawing, also know as onychectomy, is not a minor procedure, but a potentially crippling one that robs an animal of integral means of movement and defense. Declawed animals may be at increased risk of injury or death if attacked by other animals. They are deprived of satisfying their instinctual behavioral impulses to climb, exercise, and mark territory. They are subject to the risks of general anesthesia and surgery, which include bleeding, infection, lameness, nerve damage, gangrene, extensive tissue damage, and death. A report in the January 1, 2001 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) by Yeon, et al., states that 33% of cats suffer at least one behavioral problem after declaw or tendonectomy surgery. Jankowski, in JAVMA (August 1, 1998), reports that acute complications "develop in up to a half of onychectomized cats. Long term complications of the procedure (are) reported for about a fifth of onychectomized cats." Martinez, in Veterinary Medicine (June 1993), reports 11% lameness, 17% wound breakdown, and 10% nail regrowth post-operatively in cats having declaw surgery.
Is declawing a painful procedure?
Declawing is actually a very painful procedure. In DVM Best Practices, August 2002, veterinarian Kip Lemke illustrates typical levels of post-surgical pain using common surgical procedures. Declawing is associated with "severe pain," compared to spaying ("moderate pain") and neutering ("mild pain"). Pollari states in JAVMA (June 1, 1996), "Because these procedures are so routine, they are often trivialized by clients as well as veterinarians." "Declawing is very painful – there's no question about that…" says Dr. Katherine Houpt, professor and director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine.
Why do cats scratch things?*
Cats use their claws to maintain proper condition of the nails, for fun and exercise, and to mark territory visually as well as with scent. They stretch their bodies and tone their muscles by digging their claws into something and pulling back against their own clawhold. A cat's natural instinct to scratch serves both physical and psychological needs. Before domestication, cats satisfied these needs by clawing tree trunks. House cats can be trained to satisfy their desire to claw without damaging valuable property.

I couldn't do it to my kitties. They are tearing up my couch and loveseat though. :( I'm going to look into those softpaws for sure. Good ways to keep your cats from messing up you furniture is to either squirt them with a spray bottle when you see them doing it or yell at them in a firm voice and definitely make sure you have things like scratching posts that you cover with catnip.

Bob, you could cut your cat's whole leg off and it would eventually recover and be a happy cat, but you still probably shouldn't, you know? I realize that sounds harsh - but to put it in perspective, you are talking about cutting off pieces of your cat. And they are actually important pieces. As well - some vets contend that the cat can have phantom pain for the rest of it's life (much like if a human lost a limb).
Why don't you try the softclaws and see what the success is for you?
Other training methods:
try adding a bit of vinegar to the water you spray at your cat. It will like it less.
Try placing tin foil on surfaces you don't want your cat; sprinkle it with water if necessary. Cats might play with it, but they don't generally like to stand on it - it's slippery.
Try putting two sided tape on the scratched surfaces. Cats don't like sticky shit on their paws.
ETA: Oh, and you don't need scratching posts all over the place. If you have one cat and more than two posts, the cat may be confused about where it is meant to scratch. It's a cat - it doesn't recognize subtle differences in material as much as it knows a location where it is meant to go, you know?
My mum had some success when she saw the cat scratching, seizing upon it, running it over to the scratching post and moving its paws up and down on it.

Re: Catputation - Cats don't show pain very well. They hold it in. Just cause a cat looks happy doesn't mean it's not in pain. Declawed cats have a lot of pain when they scratch in a litter box and it can lead to them not using it.

OK, just wanted to close the declawing topic as I don't want a heated debate to start on this issue on blue.
As far as the number of scratch posts I have, I live in a three floor townhouse so I have one on each floor. Then again, he does only have one litterbox and has no problem finding it so that may be a good point.
Jenny, you're right. It's not fair for me to consider declawing before I try ALL remedies available to me including Softpaws.
Thanks for your input everyone. [/end declawing talk]
