Taxi to the Dark Side is really good. It's about the CIA's use of torture on POWs/PEC. It won an Oscar and Discovery Channel bought the rights to it, but won't show it until Bush is out of office due to the controversy.
It's posted on youtube in 8 parts.

Also, Guys and Dolls is pretty interesting. Men who are in love with their "Real Dolls."

Pleasure for Sale: a more realistic documentary/episodic about women working in Nevada brothels. You can find the episodes on YouTube by googling the title.

I also recommend Enron: The Smartest Guy in the Room, like a few others have mentioned.

Our Kind of People: about Blacl bourgeoisie/elite in America

Saw Jesus Camp...VERY scary! lol

There's also a slightly creepy documentary about Love Dolls..and the men who love them...I believe it is called Guys and Dolls (!) and can be found on that www.movisfoundonline.com or one of those sites.

Erroll Morris...Watched advanced screening of Standard Operating Procedure and found it extremely interesting and gave me a more enlightened perspective on the soldiers in Abu Ghraib (sp?).

i watched that sex doll doc and oh man, it made me feel so bad for those guys...why not spend that 4 g at a titty bar, or on hookers?!

I honestly think they need to know they won't be "left". I don't want to generalize because I have never spoke to someone who owned a real doll and did NOT have sex with women. However, I think there must be a deep seeded fear of abandonment by a woman. Somehow this fills the void and is safe. I think he goes well beyond a sexual kink.

As a former sex worker in NV I really want to see the docm. that was listed. I found there are very few that are accurate which sucks.

OMG. I had to shut that movie off part way through. I was getting mad and yellling at the tv. It really got to me..

Damn, all my recommendations have already been posted.

And I think you said youve already seen Born Into Brothels in another thread... I shall rack my brain thinking now... because I LOVE docs too.

Umm.. the Guys and Dolls thing sounds very disturbing. I'm a guy, and I don't "get" the whole doll thing.. not the fugly fake looking Edvard Munch's "The Scream" lookin ones.. not the 4-6 thousand dollar real dolls that I saw on Howard Stern.. I don't think that's a doc I'd be able to watch. I like cringe worthy things, but that might be my limit. I'll have to work up some courage..

Besides, I just watched that indie flick "Lars and the Real Girl", about a shell-shocked dude who orders one of those dolls and treats "her" like his real girlfriend.. Sounds creepy, but it was a pretty sweet little movie.

Anyway, I was staying in Tucson the past couple days, and saw a documentary called "Maxed Out".. about credit card debt in American.. made me truly angry at times.. sick to the pit of my stomach at times. Really wanted to pull an Ichi the Killer on these two particular asshats who just looooooooove their collections job..

For those that loved King of Kong, there's another similar movie out there called Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade. Takes more an overview of the whole arcade phenom, and not just Mitchell vs. Wiebe. I haven't seen it yet, but some say it's better than K of K..

Hey,Audrey

I actually rented Born Into Brothels a while back and I didn't like it at all...I thought it was a bit too ..what's the word? Relativist? Like it looked at the situation from a Western point of view and only focused on 'oh, how sad, the little kids, what they go through having a whore for a mother' and it seemed too one-sided for me.

I just watched American Meth and it was ridiculously terrible, on so many levels. Don't waste your money on it.

HBO's doc on black tar heroin was interesting. It's a few years old now. I remember the soundtrack too - quite good. HBO seems to police its stuff pretty well, so I doubt it's available for free on the 'net.

"Pussycat Preacher" is about this (HOT) ex-stripper who became a Christian and started going into strip clubs in L.A. to talk to girls and about how some people in the church opposed her... I just couldn't get over how hot she is, and it's kind of funny that she goes to church looking the very same as she did when she strips (except for the clothes)...
www.jaman.com has it.

Oh, while on Veoh, I found a BBC doc called Sex and Shopping. Quite a few episodes; here's one I just came across - http://www.veoh.com/videos/v625091YJpEDYSy. Sometimes interesting, cheesy (especially the narration), astute, reactionary. This one is about a brothel in Berlin, among other prostitution-related topics: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v625163NZGjAcrY; the quirks in the legalities were amusing (but frustrating).

Also, it looks like Control is available on DVD on June 3: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_(2007_film)

i didn't read this whole thread, but you should just get netflix. they have a jillion cool documentaries on 'watch instantly'. you don't have to wait on anything and the cheapest option is like 5 dollars a month. and if you want actual dvds, then you can get those as well.

I watched Bangkok Girls on VEOH.com the other night and it was amazing. It's a guy who meets a girl who is a bar girl in Bangkok and she tells about the sex industry in Thailand. It's estimated that 800,000 girls in Bangkok work in the sex industry!

oh, and I watched "18 with a bullet" on veoh.com and it was amazing! its actually 3 different episodes about the gang "18" in san salvador. the whole thing is nearly 3 hours long, but well worth it.

18 and MS are 2 rival gangs in san salvador and their gang war is responsible for one of the highest murder rates in the world. this documentary follows around some of the gang members and they talk about what it's like to be in a gang etc. the leader of that part of the gang is only 16. if you're interested in gangs or anything like that, it's seriously THE best gang documentary i've ever seen.. and i've seen a lot :)

when it comes out check Trouble The Water. it is a beautiful documentary about Hurricane Katrina. I just got back from the premiere. It is really really moving. Danny Glover helped produce it. good shit.

Everybody please support and see this film!! This is the truth about Katrina. Its only been three years. We are still putting our city together. Please don't forget what people went through and the struggles we continue to face. We are coming back. Better than ever.

Go see this film!!!! should be out mid sept, i think. www.troublethewater.com
