If your drive 10' behind a truck and get in it's windtunnel it can save you 40% on petrol.

My point is not that it is still going up. We all know that. But will it stop the escalation, when and at what level?

The only thing that will bring the price down is if the speculators and traders start getting their ass handed to them. As long as oil and gas futures are money making machines who would try to stop it.
It would be nice if Nigeria could get its shit together and after spending 5 years in Iraq it would be nice to see them pumping oil at pre Gulf War I levels, and of course it would be nice if the dollar rise again instead of being used for toilet paper.
I need to start looking at bus schedules.

Or...you could connect your car to the truck (with a chain) and save 100% on petrol...;)

My G6 got just over 32 MPH driving 5-10 under the speed limit. Granted, there was a bit of city driving in that, plus I was running the A/C, plus I had a vicious headwind on the way home. Took a little bit longer to complete the trip, but al in all, it wasn't that bad.
Yesterday my wife mentioned this gas station that had regular at $3.87. I needed gas (well actually I was on vapors) and the station was on the way to a customer I need to see. I pulled up to the pumps and saw that the station was out of both regular and mid grade. All they had was premium at $4.07. I was pretty much screwed as I didn't have the time or gas to go further to look for a cheaper price. I pumped in 40 bucks but I pissed and moaned the entire time.
The above mentioned $3.87 was a phantom I guess. As of today the price of regular seems to be stalled at $3.99 for the time being.

I would have partially filled there and looked for another cheap place top off.

I had a 300 mile drive this weekend to help my daughter move. For the first time in my life I really was aware of the cost in the back of my mind. At 23mpg, and the cost of Premium around here, that cost to drive was over $50. I couldn't help but think all else that could buy.
Oh, side note. For those of you who drive for business, be sure you are being compensated appropriately.
See http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=176030,00.html
Beginning Jan. 1, 2008, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (including vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:
* 50.5 cents per mile for business miles driven;
* 19 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes; and
* 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

True, but we get it at work now because several of us argued that as long as the amount is going to be more or less arbitrarily decided, the IRS figure is as well justified as anything the company can come up with.

Well, sure...if your company buys that argument :)

Regular has gone up 12 cents per gallon since my post on June 6. It is now $3.999 at the cheapest stations, but some stations are giving a five cent discount for cash.
Someone said gas was 99 cents seven years ago. Gas was 33 cents forty years ago. So it took 33 years to triple, and then another seven years to quadruple. 33.9 cents in 1967 money is $2.14 in 1007 dollars according to http://www.westegg.com/inflation/
So, gas is a little bit less than double in inflation adjusted dollars. Note to presidential and congressional candidates: who's getting that money? Oh, yeah, it's your campaign contributors, forget I said anything.
On slowing down: Driving TO Montana, I drove 80 mph and got 26.5 mpg. Coming BACK from Montana, I drove 60 mph and got 36.6 mpg. This is in a 2002 Chevy Nova. So it is possible to save a lot of money by driving slow, but OMG it takes a LONG time to drive across Montana and Idaho at 60 mph.

Good point UtahMike.
It's always a good idea to adjust for inflation and increased income.
On the downside, for those whose income has not been adjusted by much over the years, and these price increases hit them very hard.
Regarding driving slow... I seem to recall that was another reason why the 55MPH speed limit was proposed as a good idea.

(this next one is something kind of like a scientific test)

If that is true, and I don't know if it is, we may see another push to lower speed limits again.

While 55MPH may come back, i think we'll see more people get rid of their SUVs/Vans first, which may have an impact before they change the speed limit.
Prepare for the return of the station-wagon :D

The other day, in Dale McFeatters editorial he wrote, "The great thing about a big SUV is, if the economy totally tanks, you can always live in it."
