Two more comments, one anti and one pro:

First, the anti comment: If one wife in a polygamous marriage wants out, she has a problem with divorce, because she waas probably never legally married. She might have a huge investment in community property, but she won't get any of it because it is all in hubby's name.

...Only if they planned really badly (and the same can be said for many, many, MANY monogamous marriages.)

There are various ways to deal with property -- one way is to form a corporation (I know many larger poly families have done this), another is a contract like this one --

We're still renting, and don't have a lot of bling, so it hasn't been a super big deal for us. We did just sign for a new apartment. The landlord is eccentric enough (hippie cat-lover type) that we figure he'll be at ease with the concept, but we still didn't want to spring anything too odd on him while he was choosing between us and the other main candidate for the place. He asked vague questions like, "...How are you going to decide who gets their own bedroom?" which I think my wife dodged (there are three of us, and it's a 2-br) but also mentioned that one of the factors that swayed him in our favor was that we'd all been living together for several years, vs. the couple who were just moving in together. It tends to be obvious in our presence that we are a family, and physically comfortable with one another, which sort of muddles the "couple vs. friends" cues that people are looking for -- in short, we all read as "couple", except there are three of us.

Plus, this is Portland. :-)

I have no problem with consenting adults ahving whatever kind of relationship/marriage they want, but personally, there is no way I'd share my man!

^^ And I find it difficult enough to get along with ONE woman.
