Just got home from seeing it. Heath deserves the Oscar. Phenomenal performance!! He managed to make the Joker a psychopath you actually felt some compassion for. Amazing. We truly lost a rare talent with him.

Speak for yourself!! :rotfl: That guy was absofreakinlutley NUTS!

Yes he was...but the point in this one(as opposed to Jack Nicholson who was a thug who killed Bruce Waynes parents and who fell into acid during a crime)is that he became the Joker because of horrible abuse by his father that makes you kind of understand him more

*SPOILER*

I don't think so. He changed his story later. He was made to be a compulsive liar.. so we don't know if that story was true.

He actually gives two "origin stories" in the movie. Giving a hint at it but never actually telling which one if any are the real reason or just some story he'll tell to make his point.

The Joker is notorious for being manipulative.

Wikipedia:

Though many have been related, a definitive backstory has never been established for the Joker in the comics, and his real name has never been confirmed. He has been portrayed as lying so often about his former life that he himself is confused as to what actually happened.

Exactly.

A lot of the influence for The Dark Knight character came from "The Killing Joke" in the comics.

But as she said, he's just got no definitive origin story. Some have tried, none have stuck.

You could definately see the influence of "The Killing Joke" in Heath Ledger's performance. I still love the joke he tells to Batman in that comic:

See, there were these two guys in a lunatic asylum... and one night... one night they decide they don't like living in an asylum any more. They decide they’re going to escape! So like they get up on to the roof, and there, just across the narrow gap, they see the rooftops of the town, stretching away in moon light... stretching away to freedom. Now the first guy he jumps right across with no problem. But his friend, his friend daren't make the leap. Y'see he's afraid of falling... So then the first guy has an idea. He says "Hey! I have my flash light with me. I will shine it across the gap between the buildings. You can walk across the beam and join me." But the second guy just shakes his head. He says... he says "What do you think I am, crazy? You would turn it off when I was half way across."

theres this quote from the joker that says "if I'm going to have a past, I'd prefer it to be multiple choice!", so none of the stories must be true. No one knows where he's from or why he acts the way he does.

Also something that stuck to me about the Joker was, in the animated series, when some all-powerful character asked villains to give their souls to him in exchange for anything they desired, the joker sold his soul for....a pack of cigarettes.

True...but it give you a hint at what lies beneath....without actually knowing. Makes him more human and less of a caricature. Which actually makes him scarier....because he's more real and less cartoony as a psychopath.

Also, when Scarecrow used his Fear Gas on him in the comics, it was shown the Joker had no fear!! I like how the Scarecrow was in this film.

I was fully expecting to see Harley Quinn as well.

The eyeliner thing was annoying me too! It made it seem like he was someone, but he really wasn't. Strange.

The main girl annoyed me too. She acted like she was nicole kidman or julia roberts, some one big name...but she's not. It seemed like she was always smiling or happy no matter what she was saying. Like she had no depth as her character.

It was a GREAT movie though. So good it made me stressed out afterwards that some crazy-ass was going to be a copy-cat joker and kill my ass. It's pretty cool when you get into a movie that much.

OK, now I'm curious to see it, but I have to ask: how gory is it? I've never seen any of the Batman films, so not sure what to expect. Dark, creepy and suspenseful is great, but I can't handle graphic bloody gore at all.

I haven't seen it yet, but my inner geek squeals with glee that Nestor Carbonell is the Mayor. He was Batmanuel on The Tick, people! Genius! He's been in a ton of stuff, actually. Most people probably know him as Richard (of The Others) from Lost. He always looks like he's wearing eyeliner, too.

Just came from seeing this. Even going in with high expectations, I was still amazed. It completely goes beyond a "comic book movie" and is simply a great film, period.
The praise for Ledger is certainly not overstated, but Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent was great, too. I managed to stay completely spolier-free, so his role in the movie was a surprise.
So much was happening, but all the story and character elements were handled perfectly, without becoming muddled and confusing.

At first I assumed Ramierez was Montoya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renee_Montoya), from the comics and animated series, although considering what happens with her character, I'm glad she wasn't (as an aside, Dent is obsessed with Montoya in the comics).

Poor little kids who get taken to this movie are going to have nightmares for weeks! I now question the wisdom of giving away mini-Jokers in boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch (even though I have three).

I am eternally grateful to this movie (and Batman Begins) for snuffing out the painful memory of those that came before it.

YES!! The Michael Keaton Batmans were phenomenal...but George Clooney and Val Kilmer just ruined it....thank goodness for Christian Bale for bringing Batman back!!

I've never even heard of Montoya...the whole Question thing..with the batsignal rigged with a question mark...isnt that the Riddlers thing?(I did love Jim Carrey as the Riddler and hope they bring that character back one day!!)

Lysondra
07-22-2008, 08:33 AM
^ Oh Lordy Lordy... don't even start getting into that... then you find out Harvey Dent had a daughter who claimed she was Riddler's Daughter and then there's the Alternate Realities and the Earth-3 and... it goes on if you start reading into it. At some point in the Batman series, President Lex Luthor's (yes, from Superman) child from another reality ends up becoming Batman's nemesis... so it's best not to start reading too much into it unless you want to be stuck in comicbook land for 65892748 years.

The Burton movies were okay (although I hated that version of the Penguin), and can be credited with restoring Batman's serious side, but they just weren't as believable as Nolan's. I preferred Mask of the Phantasm to Burton's version, which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it.

Then Joel Schumacher came along... Mr. Freeze's one-liners, Bane as a mindless thug, the Bat-credit card... it just got worse and worse. Here's an interesting bit on Wikipedia about Batman Triumphant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_%28film_series%29#Batman_Triumphant) and other canceled sequels.

It also rumors David Tennant as the next Riddler, which would be AWESOME.

I loved that we didn't get the Joker's origin in Dark Knight; that should remain a mystery. His different stories about his scars were a neat trick- the first time, I thought "They can't just explain it like that!" But then it turns out to be another aspect of his insanity.

This is on the news just as I'm typing this (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/showbiz/article-23518943-details/Batman+star+Christian+Bale+arrested+over+claims+he +assaulted+his+own+mother+and+sister/article.do)... what a shame!

I can't believe he assaulted his mom and sister. WTF?! That completely blows my mind. He's a vegetarian! lol. He always seemed so nice in interviews.

I think they've been on the outs for awhile (and I thought he was estranged from his sister) so I think they're dong it for money.
Did you see him in All the Little Animals?

On perez:

Looks like Batman's mouth is what got him into trouble!

A report claims that Christian Bale was likely arrested for verbal assault.

In England one can be charged with verbal assault, Class 4 and Class 5.

Good to know English mommas!

If your kids mouth off, threaten to have them arrested!

Is that really arrest-worthy????

Unless you're screaming "I'm gonna fucking kill you!", we don't think it is.

What do U think?

I disagree 100%. Maggie Gyllenhaal gave that character major depth and purpose. She had sass and motivation. I think she's a billion times better as an actor than Julia Roberts.

Bleh.I can just see straight through her acting.

Actually I think I have some deeply rooted thing against her. I told my bf that I didn't like the "main chick" and he said "you know thats the same girl you bitched about in (some other movie) and the one you walked out of".

I'm AWFUL with faces, so I honestly didn't know it was the same girl. I can't even get people in the same movie straight unless ones black and the others white or two chicks with blond and black hair, it's that bad.

I just subconsciously hate her I guess, ahah.

I WISH they had in my theater. We had a group of teeny bopper girls behind us talking and giggling through the first part until I had to turn around and tell them to STFU. They did though,thankfully...for the most part..still some giggling...but enough that I could enjoy the rest of the movie. Grrrr....people making noise in movie theaters...can I add that to the pet peeves list??>:(

There's an option in australia to book things called 'Gold Class'. they serve food and only have thirty seats and charge $30 a seat. Nobody fucking talks in those movies because of the price. You never get children or teenagers. Plus - they serve alcohol.
