even though they have egg whites (meat) mixed with dairy?
Eggs are parve, not meat. Parve means it's 'nuetral'. Fish is considered neutral too.

why??

Different reasons. Fish also don't need to be kashered like meat does... fish have so little blood and blood is the main reason for koshering meat (the way it's killed and prepared) is absolete. Only certain fish are kosher though. They must have scales and fins and not lose them at any point in their liftime. So barammundi is kosher but eel is not.
And eggs are simply not considered meat.
There's a large group of 'uber-Rabbis' that translate the old scrolls as best they can so we know what to eat. At one point there were rules on which insects we could or could not eat, but since we cannot translate that any more, the 'uber-Rabbis' decided we couldn't eat them anymore at all.
In the end, we just listen to them for the rules and follow best we can comparitive to our specific beliefs.
I think giraffe is kosher.

Growing up orthodox made me run away from home as soon as I was able....they treat women so fucking bad. My mother still has to wear a wig in public. And my community is so strict, people like Lysadora would never ever be accepted, she would be the "shiksa whore" haha!
I do sort of understand why the Jewish community would be a little hesitant to welcome gentile folks who want tot convert, every single one that I have met sort of 'brags" about being Jewish and try to "act Jewish" if that makes any sense. It's kind of creepy.

Since you grew up Jewish, do you have any advice on some kosher foods I might find here?

Fish is pareve but you aren't supposed to eat it with meat. (No Worcestershire sauce with your steak!)
Giraffe is technically a kosher animal but because there is no good place on the long neck to cut the jugular, it is not kosher by default.

Nope. It was deemed kosher recently (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,23823681-5005961,00.html ).. it's just not practical!!
:)
Anyway, damn, didn't know about the fish/meat thing. I do sometimes have W sauce with my steak so I'll omit that now.
Anyone know any products I can buy that are surprisingly kosher? Best Foods mayo is and that's been a big help.

Israeli kashrut is a totally different matter. Because their shochets (slaughterers) and butchers have very different training and are as precise as surgeons.
In Israel the entire cow is available as kosher whereas the rest of the world it is just the fore-quarters. (In Israel they systematically remove all the necessary veins, arteries and nerves from the hind quarters surgically as part of the kashering process.)
And yeah, the Worcestershire sauce thing is a downer. That stuff is tasty!

Yes, I'm aware of the latter. :) But even Israeli kashrut couldn't possibly use the liver!! But it's nice to know where I can get an israeli rump roast. P:
But yeah.. I'm not exactly going to go out and go GEE WILDERNESS OF AUSTRALIA, KILL ME A GIRAFFE, DEM BE GOOD EATINS!
Hahaha.

i am not trying to offend but i have always wondered... why do you have to eat this way?
G-d commanded it, and we must follow.

Depends... you can definitely call yourself Jewish all you want but some hardcore Jews won't see you as one unless you're born one. But that's passed amongst most Jews... I am not seen as one because I am converting still (not done) but you can DEFINITELY convert to Judaism.
It's a super long process. Minimum 2 years.
That's not always true.
A Jew who has converted will be considered Jewish no matter what in the eyes of G-d, and that is all that really matters anyway.
The only way you can call yourself Jewish and be honest though, is by either birth (your Mom MUST be Jewish to be considered a Jew), or conversion. NO other way.
My conversion was a little over a year, it depends on the Rabbi, and you of course.

When did that happen?
My Rabbi says that fish and eggs are considered meat, which is why I can't eat cheesy omelettes.

Fish and eggs have always been parve to the best of my knowledge.

Liver? Liver is kosher as long as it is FULLY cooked.
Jews love some chopped liver sandwiches! (Ack, not me so much.)

I try to eat halal myself...and kosher is the next best thing to halal so I find myself eating a lot of kosher food.
Eh. Faith. The only thing that ever makes me feel guilty about anything.
*crawls under a rock*
But where I am...everything is halal and there are halal meat shops everywhere...since SE Michigan might as well be the middle east.
I love bacon, too.
Good ol bacon eating trick turning Moroccan.
Heh.

wow this is amazing, joining SW i had no idea i would actually be in the company of people who enjoy their religion too!
My friends really don't understand especially in the UK, religion just doesn't factor any longer. I truly believe even without being born into judaism, i feel i would have veered this way in the end.
Thanks everyone, I feel so proud to be jewish and its wonderful to be able to have these conversations!

p.s. lysondra tobelerones FTW! I always stock up in duty free haha!

I dunno, since I have only been converted for a few years, but I was told during conversion that they were considered meat so I couldn't mix them with dairy.
It really doesn't matter to me anyway, since dairy is against my diet, lol.;D

I can't think of who would possibly tell you that. So many books for YEARS I have in my cupboard alone say it's Parve. How weird.
