Also, the police can for no reason search you or the inside of your car within your reach to guarantee his safety. Ie, if he thinks you have a gun, he can look anywhere you can reach for the gun for his own safety. Anything he happens to find during that search is legal, so if you happen to have anything illegal in your car it should be in the far back well out of your reach.
so cops are not allowed to look in your trunk?

Here is a Card you can request from the ACLU. You can carry it in your wallet

But you'd be absolutely crazy not to. Otherwise, the cop is going to assume there's a reason it remained concealed, and the minute he spots it, he'll draw on you, as will his partner.
Trust me on this.
Always, always, always, do what Kitana describes. Most cops who get killed end up getting shot quickly and without exchanging a word with the person they are approaching. Every time they approach a car they've pulled over, they have no idea who's in there, how they are armed or what their intent is.
It's a high pucker-factor job.
Ummm... I mean absolutely no disrespect by this but all that, as we say in the biz, furtive movement going on: reaching for the weapon, unloading it, [in the case of an auto racking the slide to remove the round in the chamber which from the back as an officer approaches the car looks no different than the movement used to rack one into the chamber]. What Katrina describes, in the NYC area is apt to get you dead. Please recall, and this is NO indictment on my brothers, that this is the city where you can get shot 41 times for having a wallet that looks like a gun.
When we pull over the vehicle the first thing we look for is motion in the car. A bunch of moving around makes us nervous. Are you reaching for a license or are you secreting contraband? Are you hiding a gun or taking one out?
If stopped by the police the best thing to do is pull over in a lit area, if you can, bring the car to a complete stop. Turn your interior light on. Roll down your driver's side window [passenger as well if you have electric windows with controls on the driver's side], turn the car off, and place your hands at 10 & 2 on the steering wheel and leave them there until the officer tells you to move them.
That is the way you avoid accidents.

They need probable cause, your permission, or a search warrant.

It's not concealed. What was the cirumstances of having a PO draw down on you? Did you go for the glove box and open it while telling him something and then he sees a gun? Always tell them first, before you even go for the glove box. I've had some let me get the weapon, others did it themselves.
What state are you in? I'm in Fl.
Mississippi. It was a rookie cop, he was sweating. I had already informed the man that I had a gun in my car and my hands were on the steering wheel. CLEARLY where he could see them. He sort of freaked out a little when I just calmly looked the man in the eye. No big deal. He was just doing his job and I totally respect that. I drive a purple SUV, the officer was simply profiling.
After he got a look at me ( I'm a little too chubby to be a crack head ) the man realised his mistake. Very apologetic. There's a marine sticker on my back window and after tag checking and all that jazz he left me alone.
I ALWAYS ALWAYS tell the PO that I have a weapon in my ride.. It is holstered, on my dash. Im not so stupid as to reach for a weapon when law enforcement is standing around. Both of my marine ex's would kick my butt for that one. :)

OMG so GREAT!! I am mailing that to my dad he will love it! He is Mr don't talk to the cops you have rights man!!
the one thing you DO Have to tell them though is if you have a concealed weapon, or a weapon anywhere in your car even if it is unloaded. Now if you get pulled over for a routine traffic violation and you have no indication they will search your car you dont have to say it but if you have a visible gun case or you get the feeling they want to search you......
Calmly say NON CONFRONTATIONAL non psychotic way the following:
You (MAKE SURE YOUR HANDS ARE ON THE WHEEL OR IN THE AIR AT THE TIME YOU SAY THIS) "Sir there is something in my car I want to tell you about because you have a right to know. It is legal and registered to me, but I just wanted to respectfully inform you from the get go that I do have a weapon in my car. I have a permit for said weapon. It is a *type of weapon* that is unloaded and it is located in *X spot."
Do not say anything like "I have a gun." Even though you are like, just calmly stating that you have a gun, that sounds really threatening. I mean, imagine if a stranger said to you "I have a gun!!!" it sounds bad.
I actually once had an officer pull his weapon me because of this situation : I had the top down on my car and a temporary liscence plate which was in the soft window of the car, so you couldnt see it with the windows down. He pulled me over for that. There was construction and I signaled for him to follow me into a parking lot (which was empty.) I did this bc I didn't want to fuck up my new ride to be honest, but I think he felt threatened that I diverted him from the main road. Oh, and I also stupidly made matters worse because when I saw his gun I freaked out and I somehow whipped my cigarette out of my hand right at his pants. Once he realized what was going on he was apologetic and nice. so take it from me NO SURPRISES, NO SUDDEN MOVEMENTS.

I'm in Florida, I've carried a gun in my car since I was 18. I respectfully disagree, and will leave it there so it doesn't become repetitive. ;)
