Not only are most of them not currently affordable by the majority of us, they are not practical due to location, or cost, or availability.
If they're never considered affordable, they will never be developed. Then when the present supply is depleted, there are no alternatives because they couldn't be developed. Zero sum equation.
I would LOVE to be non dependent on oil totally, but not if I can't afford it.I suggest that by us not affording to get the process started, we are ensuring that our descendants can't afford anything.
I hear the same thing: "Solar/wind/nuclear/fuel cell/electric aren't viable because..." as though it's a reason to never get seriously started on them. Just about all technologies start out as nonviable. It's only through development past those tough early stages that they become viable.
And energy technology carries its own sharp consequences as opposed to other technologies. If the new Intel processor is too expensive or runs too hot to be used, well, we can all keep getting by on the computers that we have. If the new satellite phone system loses a satellite or is too expensive, we can keep using our cells.
But we can't keep getting by on energy through nonrenewable (and highly polluting) resources. They will keep fouling our environment, and they will run out.

I totally agree Jay!
Please don't misread me. I do hope we start seriously looking into alternatives and soon; like yesterday soon ;D; but until they are as affordable if not MORE affordable than sweet crude, I have to stick to crude. But I think that we should start working on them now so they will be there in the future, not to mention that will boost the economy, since it will provide jobs for some that are unemployed currently. (which is also another reason I am cool with off shore drilling, since it does provide MANY new jobs, which will help stimulate the economy since those people will have paychecks to spend)
It's not the people like you and me that are stopping or preventing in any way, from other sources to even begin; it's the people with the cash that are scared. Like oil tycoons, gas companies, car companies, etc....

Afaic you are expressing a sensible mainstream approach that no same person would argue against. There already are cleaner alternatives such as nuclear. The opposition to building more nuclear plants is NOT coming from the Republicans. It's coming from the Dems and their environmental supporters. Who do you think is opposing solar farms in the Mojave and other deserts ? It ain't the Club for Growth.
Wind and natural gas are both viable and affordable. But they require building more transmission lines ; retooling a lot of cars, trucks and buses and installing a lot of refilling facilities with properly trained personnel. Propane is not ready for "self-serve".
Even if we drilled everywhere the oil companies wanted to, we don't yet have enough refining capacity to absorb the new crude and use it. Who's opposing building new refineries ?
Who has supported ethanol tariffs ? BOTH parties have been kissing Iowa's ass.
Why haven't we revived Puerto Rico's dead sugar cane industry for our own ethanol production ? We can also grow it on Guam; American Samoa and the Virgin Islands. Iowans and the corn industry ( Archer Daniels Midland et al.) don't want us to and they've been contributing MORE to the Dems as of late than to the Republicans.

I have a brother who is gay. Can you tell me how the Republican Party will make sure MY FAMILY has equal rights and he is NEVER discriminated against. Why can't your Party Pass a hate crimes bill. Why can't he have equal rights or marry?
The last time I read the Constitution, it said ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL...not all STRAIGHT MEN.
So please tell me how YOU, the Republican Party, and John McCain are going to PROTECT my FAMILY from discrimination
Actually...any Republican on this thread...please tell me how my family will not be discriminated against by your party like it has been for years.

No, I do not wish to change the subject. You said my opinion was funny, and thanks for the laugh, I asked you why and now you want to change the subject?! That's funny!::)
First off, please don't make it personal. I can do nothing but vote and write letters, I can not change laws on my own, nor am I running for office, so do expect me to change anything, or cast me into the same lot as the others.
With that said, I can't and neither can anyone else. It's a fact of life. Sad but true. Anywhere you go, there will be someone or someones who will discriminate against you for your sex, race, color, religion, political preference, etc.... Writing a law to stop it, will NOT change that. That should be obvious, since there are laws against rape, but it happens every day, same with drugs, drunk driving, murder, robbery, etc....
Awareness and education is the only way to stop hate. Ignorance breeds fear, fear breeds contempt, contempt breeds hate, and hate breeds violence. If you stop the cycle early, it will be reduced and eventually will be extinct.
FYI, your brother CAN be married, or do you not keep up with news?
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-gaymarriage16-2008may16,1,4027698.story
"Our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation," the California Supreme Court ruled in a 4-3 opinion that overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage.
Six of the seven members of the court are Republicans. Outside the courthouse, gay marriage supporters cried and cheered as news spread of the decision, the Associated Press reports.
Just so you know, 3 of the 6 Repubs on the court voted FOR and 3 voted against. So you got a 50/50 chance, lol.
Guess not all Republicans are against you and your family huh? That's what they can do, a quick Google search answered your own question.

Well kiddo, your profile says Texas AND CALIFORNIA, so......
It's legal in Mass too, or did you forget that, and yes he can drive there and get married.
It is called sweet crude by everyone in the industry, that's not my personal nickname, rofl. But you should know that since you are so against it and all.::) Sweet crude oil is a type of petroleum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum). Petroleum is considered "sweet" if it contains less than 0.5% sulfur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_crude_oil#cite_note-0) compared to a higher level of sulfur in sour crude oil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sour_crude_oil). Sweet crude oil contains small amounts of hydrogen sulfide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_sulfide) and carbon dioxide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_dioxide). High quality, low sulfur crude oil is commonly used for processing into gasoline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline) and is in high demand, particularly in the industrialized nations. ~thanks wiki, lol.
Oh and thanks for assuming (how juvenile that you have to write it like that, BTW) that I am from Kentucky, and I have this "so called mentality", it's cute and utterly idiotic.

How many people in Kentucky are going to vote for Obama/MCCain based on the issues vs the color of his skin?

Ok you got me. I really have dentures. I was ashamed to admit it.
As far as voting, well it seems you are boxing me into religion based or bigot. I am not that religious nor am I a bigot. I am worried about keeping my business afloat. I am one of those "rich" business owners with a tax increase target painted on his back.
I have quite a few relatives in Kentucky. As a matter of fact we just had a reunion a few weeks ago. There was some talk of politics. One nephew and one niece said they plan to vote for Obama. The majority of my relatives attending however said they would vote for McCain. I asked why McCain and not Obama. Son of a gun but none of them said because Obama is black. Frankly, I didn't know what to make of that.

Yes I moved to Ohio because of my job. It has worked out well for me. I am still a Kentucky boy at heart though.
Pretty much everyone in Dayton has Kentucky roots. You know, the old joke about the Kentucky folks migrating north to Detroit for jobs but their cars broke down in Dayton. Similarly the folks in West Chester.
Obviously you know a lot of bigoted Kentucky folks but hopefully a few who are not. Obviously I know a lot of folks who are not bigoted recognizing that there are no doubt some acquaintances of mine down home who are if I wanted to seek them out. My only reason for posting was to point out that your blanket statement regarding folks with Kentucky roots ..I dunno...felt classist to me. I agree, Kings Island rules. I purchased season passes for years when my kids were young. They were always like "Dad, ride the Beast with us!!!" I always declined because the ride made me ill and pukey feeling. I asked their mother to ride in my place so that she could feel ill and pukey. Probably my biggest failure as a father and husband.

Plenty of people are switching to things like solar to power their homes and businesses but yes it true that it's not something that anyone and everyone can do at this point in time. It's also true that we need new systems to deliver energy made from things like wind. These things can be built. We can do it. It’s a choice.
Here is the big but in all this though.
The longer we focus on oil and coal as our main source the longer it will take to make alternatives fully affordable for all. The only way to EVER get to affordable alternatives is to stop putting most of our time, money (and saddest of all )our military men and women’s life and limb into getting more and more oil.
If you want to get off oil and have alternatives to be available and affordable then don't support more drilling. It's really IS that simple.
Dayton is hazy most of the time during the summer and it's really not that breezy other than when we have the occasional rain storm. It pisses me off that we cannot take advantage of all the free energy out there in other states. In all fairness, they should pipe our fair share of that solar and wind power over our way.

Agreed and once we have a power line type system you will get it. Or maybe you’ll get nuclear or hydro or whatever. But first we have to make the jump and CHOOSE to get off fossil fuels in the first place. After that everything else will fall into place.
^^ Indeed. It pisses me off that Indiana is so flat. It's not fair that Ohio has modest mountains which totally disrupt the wind flow while Indiana takes advantage of the wind energy opportunities that only a flat state can enjoy. Do you think that Obama could make it right? I mean, create a few mountains in Indiana while squishing down a few of ours so they don't impede the air flow? I bet he can.

Ah so you are just making fun of me. How nice :sarcastic And here I thought that you were actually interested in participating in reasonable discussion but now I see you are not. My mistake.
When you see an ol salty dawg like FBR, your best bet is to ignore 1/2 of the sarcasm, and take the other half of what he says with a lime and tequlia, lol.
He's always 1/2 serious 1/2 sarcastic, which IMO is part of his charm and unfailing attraction.

That's all "old news". Iraq's oil was supposed to pay for the costs of the invasion and occupation but it didn't work out that way; did it ?
Bremer was a total incompetent and there is no doubt that Iraqi exile assholes like Chalabi sold a bill of goods to some of Bush's nit-wit neo-con buddies. And I'm sure that some of Bush & Cheney's oil buddies were blinded by the dollar signs in their eyes put there by visions of Iraq's immense oil fields. Again, it didn't work out.
As far as Iraq putting out for bids; that was actually long overdue as the current state of its oil industry is pathetic.

I figured you would miss the point and I was correct. Oh well, I tried.

What ? That some of the Bushies were motivated by access to Iraqi oil ? Old news. More than 5 years old. In fact, Perot and others claimed the First Iraq war was really fought over oil.
