Eat a lot of strawberries when you get those bruises... they have the highest count of vitamin c of any fruit... which will help bruises heal quicker. I'm a pole maverick... I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the pole... I'm always experimenting, and when I do that I just happen upon new things. Hey... pole teacher, I have a question... there are only a few things I can't do, but one of them is a handspring onto the pole, no legs... all arms. Can you do that? If so, I'd love to take a class just to learn that one. I can get halfway up, but not all the way up/stationary. I'm in LA as well.

That's my power move. I love it! One of two moves that get the most response from crowds when I perform (the other one is the splits twirling down the pole).
I'm going to try and upload a picture of me doing it at my studio. I have to resize it so we'll see if it works.
The first picture is how I lift myself into it and the second is the pencil verson.20990 20989
If you come down I can teach you it. I love having girls in who have the ability to do some of the more advanced stuff, I don't normally get to teach those things.

Nice pic!! :)
The first one....for me is a handspring mount...springing up on the hands.
The second one is the candlestick...with 2 on the pole makes a candlabra!
That move definitely gets reaction on stage!
I have to agree that it really is enjoyable to teach students the aerial levels!!
Seriously, you should stop into my pole forum....would love to have your input on that level! :)

I saw in the newbie faq about online pole classes, but for me that would only work if i had a pole at home. for those who don't or didn't have a pole at home when you first started, how did you learn the pole?
I was fortunate to work at a club that had an entire practice room for us when I started. Learning made it easy that way. I never tried anything new in front of a crowd. There were no such things as home dance poles back then (10+ yrs ago).
So, the best way to do it in my opinion is to buy a pole to practice at home. You really should purchase lessons from someone who knows what they are doing though. You truly could hurt yourself. Pole Dancing should be treated with care. You don't want to be out of work for a pole injury do you?

Ah yes, that's the one! I can get partially up, but fear drops me back down. I'm going to have to show you some crazy you tube vids of things I want to improve upon. Where are you located? Will you PM me? I don't know how to PM anyone yet... ? Thanks!

God you guys are amazing. I have a question.
How did you develop the hand/arm/upperbody strength to even be able to hold yourself on the pole when you were first starting?
My upperbody is my weakness. I have such little natural strength. It took me like 2 weeks of working out to even be able to do a full set of push ups. I work on it every day too. Any specific exercises?

Get a membership to my website www.PoleChamp.com for $24.95. The first several video clips are dedicated to exercises directly related to pole dancing.
If you had a good teacher, like Alena, myself or any teacher who has been through the Pole Cat Power Method program- they would FIRST help you develop your muscles and muscle memory directly related to the move you are trying to do. It's not always about building the muscle, but also about getting the body comfortable to do what you are asking it to.

I started in a club where I used to work. On slow nights i would go on stage and practise or in other words goof around and then let the best girl on the pole teach me.
Then when i returned home ( i was dancing in Spain) i got myself in a poledance class to learn some more. Now I have a pole at home and practise whenever I feel like it.

I was just about the same when I first started. It's really about developing very good shoulder, arm, back, and ab strength (abs for the inversions). A lot of people might overlook how much a strong back will help for this problem (not to mention a strong back looks hot! pulls your stomach even flatter, too!)
For arms I do bicep curls, french presses for my triceps or tricep presses, hammer curls w/ dumbbells.
For shoulders I usually do side/lateral raises w/ dumbbells, "scarecrow" pulls w/ a floor cable & rope handle, and assisted pull ups (wide grip).
I also do a combo arm/shoulder workout on the floor cable w/ rope handle that combines hammer curl then scarecros pull, and repeat.
For my back I like to work it out top to bottom! Inverted presses and inverted pulls on the various weight machines, rear deltoid flies on the machine, stiff leg deadlifts (free weights!) or modified dead lifts on the lower back extension stand, and lower back extensions.
For abs I do inverted sit ups (use your abs, not your legs!), jack knife cruches/situps, hanging leg lifts, and for my obliques weighted side bends. Of course, you can use a medicine ball on the mat for different variations of many awesome ab exercises. Just remember you need to strengthen more than just the top of your abs (what regular crunches exercise)...the middle, lower, and sides are equally important!
Megan Fox uses the hanging leg lifts and she has smooookin' feminine abs.
All of those exercises got me in shape QUICKLY.
Just remember to stretch stretch stretch b/c new exercises can get you stiffer than usual

You can work the pole fine if you've had a breast job. Just give yourself plenty of time to heal beforehand. A few months to be safe.

I've seen those poles you can have in your home. They're the ones I've seen at Spencers & stuff. Probably not the most reliable...I'd be afraid of knocking it over while trying to attempt a trick. Are there any that go from ceiling to floor & are sturdy enough?

There sure are.
www.platinumestages.com (http://www.platinumestages.com)
www.xpole.com (http://www.xpole.com)
www.stripperpoles.com (http://www.stripperpoles.com)
I have 4 platinum Stages Poles 1 X-pole and 1 Lil Minx- all are great poles.
As a dancer you'll want to get something that is spinny and static (x-pole or platinum stages are your best value) because you never know when you'll be working at a club that has one or the other.
Pole tricks take time to learn and dedication. I personally just jumped right in - I'm lucky I've not been hurt or injured. The best place to learn is in a class or with a DVD that provides a proper warm up and cool down such as Jamilla's Art of Pole or Nikita's website or polejunkies.com.
Watching Youtube is helpful for getting ideas but not learning. There are a lot of pole dancers that post clips only - which is bad because many of them including myself will cut out mounts to make the video fit within the music time frame.
I hope this helps:)

Heh sadly Charlee thats not what she meant, but I highly applaud you for showing her the right way first.
I highly reccomend NOT getting the poles at spencers. Having wasted my money on them myself;;; dont. Just use the money you woulda wasted finding out "oh shit this is ghey" ... on the good stuff now. LOL
I being dumb didnt read the box and bought a peekaboo.. duur wtf? i cant even LEAN on it? ok there goes like $80. then I bought the carmen pole.. well wtf? I can only spin one way?? -o- /sigh and there really wasnt any grip either. I mean you could do some of the basic stuff on it.. but I my self was highly dissapointed. as for the my sexy little pole.. I wasnt about to blow another $120 on something that was just gonna piss me off in the end. So I waited. and my friend at the studio actually got me an xpole =D
so the moral of the story, don't be a cheap bastard. For safety reasons, and personaly if you want to ENJOY your practices, spend the money =) well worth it, good investment!

I really really want to learn to pole dance, but where I live there are no classes for this type of dancing. The only way I could learn is to go to a club and talk to the people there, but since I haven't got the body for that I'll have to wait till some dance school will include this in their repertoir. :(

You can always purchase a pole online - your best value is the X-pole based on where you live and purchase online lessons or a DVD. I highly recommend either Pole Cats or Art of Pole.
X-poles hold their value well so if you decided you aren't loving pole dance you can always resell it and the DVD for most of what you had spent - even if you had taken a 4 week course you would not get your money back ifyou didn't like it - so you don't have anything to loose :)

Hi you! I haven't seen you around much lately. Is there another secret dancer forum I don't know about?
I had a peek a boo as well when I first started and I brought it down - I was at the top of it and it fell over smashing the light fixture and glass raining down on me - I was ok - only minor cuts. But I've heard of girls being hospitalized after a spill on the peek a boo.
After that I decided to buy pro poles. Buy cheap, buy twice! I couldhave saved myself money had I never bought that peek a boo. (Money for SHOES!!!!)

You just aren't having any luck with poles are you? Atleast you have a pole in static mode to work on tricks.
How tall are your ceiling? The X-pole comes 9'4 our of the box so should fit most heights.

haha i know right?
well.. it came with 2 extentions... 1 is too big... and the other one.. i think when i put it up the extender rod is too far out causing the oddness in the spin, like the weird clunking noise. but yes in stationary it works =) and i was taught on stationary so its fine =) i just wanna play a bit ^.~
