My goal now is to become vegan. Cheese is my weakness though.
That's me! You could do "almost vegan" and have some cheese every once in awhile too. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.
If I eat a slice of regular cheese pizza, bowl of ice cream, or something with a lot of dairy in it, I'll get stomach issues. But I can eat a few cheese crackers, stifle my cheese cravings, and not be sick. I think only cheese gets me because there really isn't a good substitute.
This is why I hate labels. I'm not 100% vegan, but I call myself vegan because it's the best way to describe it....but I guess technically I'm vegetarian.
Really, who gives a fuck? I make my eating choices for me, not to appease the label police.

^^^I agree with you, Emily. I've been a full, strict vegan for 8 years and while I don't preach to people, sometimes people question my diet and I will explain to them that I do it for health reasons. I frequently have people say things like "I agree with you and I'd love to be vegan but I could never give up chocolate." They don't even consider the possibility that they could give up everything but chocolate, or even just reduce their dairy intake.
Why do people have this idea that it has to be all or nothing? To me it's as absurd as saying "I'm going to fail math class so I might as well fail English and Science as well."
Let's just all educate ourselves and do our best to do good :)

^^^ I just had some vegan chocolate (my love - www.veregoods.com). Why would people think they'd have to give up chocolate to go vegan?:O
When I was 100% vegan, it was easy. And I was vegan for many years.

Most of the vegan chocolates don't taste very good to me, because I'm a milk chocolate kind of girl, but I can definitely find some.
Goldberg peanut chews are the BOMB! and vegan.
I hope they are not a regional thing. They are everywhere here, but I don't recall seeing them anywhere else but the east coast.

I'm a pretty healthy eater. Lots of veggies, homemade stuff.
I did it by becoming a food snob :D
Which pretty much ensures I'm not eating fast food or junk foods. And making a lot of my own food or going out for more gourmet type stuff. I don't think I'd be able to go back to wonderbread after experiencing freshly baked goodness, for example.
I am the same way. I hate wasting my taste buds on shitty crap.

I get a candy bar (Crispy Cat) from the health food store out here that's pretty good.
I used to be near vegan when I worked out a lot. Then I stopped going to the gym and fell off my healthy diet. But I'm working on that. I just turned 40 last week and I'm fighting the laws of gravity and aging like it's nobody's business. Plus being in good health is always a good thing.

I don't think I've ever seen these but since these are the ingredients: peanuts, corn syrup, sugar, molasses, dextrose, partially hydrogenated veg oil (cottonseed, soybean), cocoa powder, soya lecthin, salt.
My snobbery comes out. I couldn't bring myself to eat the chews.

well, I never claimed to eat only healthy foods.
I'm just pointing out there are those "surprisingly vegan" goodies and this, imo, is the best.
others: WARNING! THIS IS MOSTLY JUNK!

i've been eating 100% raw vegan for almost a week now, and I feel so high all day long. I have so much energy it's insane........I feel like my eyesight is getting better too because I went for a hike today and could see every detail on every leaf and colors seemed brighter too. I've read stories about raw foodism improving or completely repairing people's eyesight, I really hope it does for me. I'm going to experiment- I have two pairs of contacts right now that are different rx's, one is higher by .5.. the one that is higher right now is a little too strong, the lower one isn't strong enough. i'm going to try them on a month from now and see if they're perfect, then go to the eye doctor to double check- i bet it will work!

OMG you are all seriously the best people ever. Everyone is putting up good links!!
Well here we are, has it been like a week now. And I'm doing good!! Only ate some stuff with dairy in it, a couple times.
At first, I got SUPER bloated (ugh) but now I'm almost back to normal (about to pms though). But I knew better to stick it out, because theres no way I can eat healthy and not eventually look/feel good!! Its just annoying for the first few weeks. Any of yous had that experience

^^I think any major change is going to require some adjustment. I mean, think about cats. They are way hardier than us, but you change their food one day and their body freaks out.
I love that Emily's link points out that this is not about personal purity. Whether your reason is the environment, cruelty or your health, you do NOT have to be perfect.
I'm proud of you!

i tried reading the entire thread but couldnt find any example.
what are some companies that compassionately raise fish? (suitable for sushi?)
id like to start my whole endeavor into eating better by at least keeping fish in my diet.
any one know? I tried googling but couldnt find anything.

I don't don't know if you can compassionately raise fish. I'd go for wild Alaskan salmon if I was eating fish. They get to do their swimming upstream and spawning thing (farmed salmon don't get to do this and will never be sushi grade because of all the nasty shit in their systems from being farmed), so their job is done and they get ready to die. At that point, they pretty much serve no purpose except to be food, and make all the other animals fat for winter. It seems as ethical and normal as it gets to eat them at that point. I call them nature's potato chip. http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/funny-pictures-bear-has-good-timing.jpg

and plus.... fish "raise" themselves and you can get all your EFA's from plant sources.
