i hate homeless people. how the fuck did you end up in the streets?? theres plenty of min wage jobs- inlcuding mc donalds and there are alot of programs that provide affordable housing. i dont ever feel sorry for homeless people.
wow this is kind of mean. i am not a fan of panhandlers, but why hate someone because they are homeless? You really have no idea what happened. Reasons why people end up on the streets vary greatly-- anything from mental illness to the struggling economy to an unforeseeable crisis can leave a person without a home.
Im not saying you should give your money to panhandlers, but basic compassion can go a long way.

Thinkin about the homeless man who died a few weeks ago during our Florida freeze...he was sleeping in these trees off the side of a busy intersection. He helped me change my tire when it went flat like a block from his "home" of trees. He was nice, I gave him $40 and told him I will speak to him if I pass by and see him again. :( He died from the cold a couple weeks later. His homeless buddy made it thru the nite... he was pretty upset when he realized in the morning his friend was gone. This was just a few weeks ago. The city cut all those trees down, so the homeless, who werent even bothering anybody, had to find a new "shelter".
City of Pensacola decided to use FEMA money to rebuild a damn fishing pier, not a homeless shelter. Stupid mofos. I do feel bad for most homeless, but I have to remember there are plenty of days I struggle, and I have 2 kids to feed. Would be different if I wasnt a mom.
I think we should not build another park, pier, playground, or anything until the government has made sure that every homeless person has a place to sleep. None of the rest of us who pay taxes should benefit from doing so until we make sure that everyone who doesn't pay taxes is taken care of.

I usually put all of the change (coins) I get after my daily purchaces in my pocket. If I'm approached then that's what I give them. It's never very much but it's better than nothing.
However, I do find myself wondering whether or not they are sincerely homeless or just blowing it on booze or drugs.

Seriously?! >:(
No, in my area there are NOT "plenty" of min wage jobs. Hell, in my area we have one of the HIGHER rates of unemployment in the nation (at 12.4% currently).

I know people that work at McDonald's that hold Master's degrees, that the only job they could get was McDonalds!>:(
We just had a factory close not 2 weeks ago and move to Mexico, so that's 1,500 more people w/o jobs in a TINY job pool.
Not to mention the fact, it's an agricultural area with TONS of farms (crops), and too many chicken houses due to Tyson. The majority of those working in that field are illegals. No joke. I know guys who were born and raised on farms, and can and will work from 4am till 9pm, can't get hired over the illegals, cause they want a min of $7/hr cash, and the illegals do it for $4.50/hr cash.
All that bitterness for a group of people you know NOTHING about. We were right on the cusp of homelessness not a few months ago. Hubby lost his job due to the economy back in Sept and hasn't found another one yet, and I had a surgery and couldn't work for 2 months. We used up all our savings, and are barely making ends meet currently.
As far as "affordable housing" goes, YEAH RIGHT! All the "landlords" in this area, bought homes cheap during the Clinton years, and the houses are crap, but they still charge $600+ for a 2 bed, and too many people moved into them cause their own homes got forclosed on. As far as Section 8 goes, there is currently a 3 yr waiting list to get approved, and a 5yr list for them to place you.
Anyone can be there in an instant, I just hope with your level of hatred, you never have to end up being there; you might just implode.
With all that said, I give to homeless people when I can, and if they ask. It's NOT my business what they do with the money once I give it to em; I treat them the same way I would want to be treated if I were in their shoes.
We (as a global society), don't stop and help each other nearly as much as we should, IMO.

I do not give money to homeless peeps, as most of those haggling me in this area are really aggressive. I do not wanna get robbed so I do not just stop and open my purse. I do give to the local women's shelter.

Depends on my mood and financial status at the time. Lately I've been feeling broke, so no, but in the past I've given generously (and probably will again).
Oh and I don't care if they spend it on drugs. If I had to sleep in the streets I'd probably need drugs myself.

It's difficult to get a job without a home base. What contact details will they put on their resumé? How, for that matter, will they type up a resumé? Where will they find the clean clothes and a shower they'll need for an interview?
Your lack of empathy is breathtaking.

Nope. I have given food in the past, or attempted to and they usually refuse it, so fuck that.

Some of this thread really makes me sad. There's really not much to be said that hasn't been said already, but to those who believe that homelessness is because of laziness and refuse to help out, or even "hate" the homeless:
You might find it annoying that someone is bothering you for money as you walk down the street, but at the end of the day you have a bed to fall asleep in and a shower to clean yourself and food to be able to survive. What a selfish, ignorant person you are, and I feel sorry for you. There might be some people who are homeless due to laziness, but not all homeless people are the same. The lack of compassion is astounding.

I used to give to homeless people and charities but now-a-days Obama decides where all my money goes.
