Did anyone see Striptease when they were little and thought it was going to be like that, like...

You're on stage at a certain advertised time for a performance, like 9:15.
Other strippers will babysit your kid in the dressing room.
You have to put on an actual performance, to only one song each time.
There are women like the giant tittied woman who rides away on the motorycle in a sequin American flag outfit.
It's all stage work and men just throw money at you - I wish it was that way. Men are so passive aggressive with their money. They only give it to you to get something.

I want to rent Striptease again - I think if I watched it now, I'd see it completely differently (and see the humor in it!).

I actually rented, "The Players Club" tonight....haha!

I thought it was a lot more wild. I thought the girls were actually giving blow jobs t customers and that the girls ran around swinging from the rafters and made out with each other and the customers.

Then again, some clubs are like this I guess...:P

i didn't know much about lapdances--when i first walked into a stripclub at age 22 i thought that stripping was all about the stage show--and that's how dancers earned hundreds per night.

i also assumed that table dances meant dancing on the table itself.

the biggest misconception i had was that stripping and stripclubs are all unsafe places to work and be at. i have felt safe at every club i've worked at.

Ditto on all this!

I also thought (and how I wish it were true) that house fees were illegal.

And I somehow got to the age of 18-19 with no idea how to move sexy, at all. The first time I auditioned at an amateur night, I got a fair number of tips because I looked very young, but I think I was probably dancing in a very strange and silly way to most perceptions! I gave up on it for a while, then caught on more when I was actually hired and got to watch other dancers.

i thought it was easy money, and that all strippers smelled like cinnamon lol (they all did at one club i checked out)

I shared what seems to be a common misconception (at least among youngsters) that table dances were actually on tables. I thought that ALL dancers looked like centerfolds with implants, that they all drove Corvettes and the like (i.e. made butt loads of cash all the time, every time), that they were all party animals (drugs and sex all the time). As I approached adolescence, I realized that the lifestyle choices were probably as individual and varied as it is for (forgive this) "normal people". But I did think that all dancers were vain, rich, manipulative, self-absorbed beauties, and probably extremely catty and competitive. The ironic thing about these misconceptions is that in spite of all of them, I have been fascinated by exotic dancing since I saw Flashdance at 6 years old. When the main character "rescues" her friend from the sleazy strip club, and chastises her with the words, "You call that dancing? That ain't dancing!", I looked up at my aunt (she was 16 at the time), and said, "Why is she mad at her friend for dancing with the pretty ladies?"

I just remembered that I had no idea WTF a house fee was. When I started, I was like, "I have to pay you to work here?"

House fees were pretty rare until the mid 90's. So this isn't such an unusual thought. Most customers still have no idea that the girls aren't paid a portion of the cover charge.

And what did the aunt say?

At my club the law is that you have to be elevated when you dance for a customer...so we actually do "table dances". The customer sits in a chair and we dance on a little coffee table looking thing in front of them.

Before I started dancing I also never realized that dancers had to pay to work at the club. I had no idea what house fees were.

I thought you had to have a typical "stripper"stage name like Peaches, Bubbles, or Sugar. I didn't realize you could have a real sounding stage name LOL!

And what did the aunt say?

She thought it was hilarious and was the first person I told when I started dancing. She was not surprised, but rather surprised that it took me til 26 to start. I love that woman.

Aw! I want to be the kind of aunt!

I think that I thought that all strippers were seriously hard, tough women that took no shit and could beat the crap out of you at the drop of a hat.
I also believed that the VIP was the only place where you would give a lapdance.

I thought all strippers had to dance on tables, too.

All strippers were super hot with fake boobs & really long fake nails.

All strippers were lesbians. (My mother told me that when I was a kid. I have no idea why.)

And I thought for some stupid reason that girls that were strippers ALWAYS looked like strippers, even when they weren't at work.

I thought that there was sex in the champagne room (thanks Chris Rock), that strippers shot up heroin between their toes in the locker room (dancing at the blue iguana), that the girls rubbed their vaginas on customers faces and gave them crabs in their eyelashes, and that the job killed your soul and it was always a last resort for girls that couldn't do better. I was an ignorant little shit:-[
Then I went to a club for real on my 18th birthday, blew my whole paycheck, slapped myself for being an idiot, and became a stripper the next week ;D

My (gorgeous) older sister was a stripper about three years before I became one. I was horrified when I found out. I was 15 years old, homely (and so I thought I had looks had no value) and I thought I knew the ins and outs of women's rights and what she was doing was godawful. She was the ultimate late 90s born-of-rave-and-goth-culture stereotype stripper - shiny black paigeboy bob, pale white skin, immaculate make up and clothing, rolling in money, and always tweeked out on coke or drunk. She burnt herself out after less than a year. She was like a Patrick Nagel painting before she physically bottomed out and had to stop to live.

I thought they ALL were like that. I was SO surprised when I got into it that a lot of girls were normal in all ways. I thought all strippers were innately flawed sparkly demi goddesses.

- that strippers were sluts and drug addicts

- that strippers would be hot with big tits

- I actually used to think i wish I could strip but ive got small tits so they wont let me LOL

- that all strippers were tall and skinny

- that making money would be really easy. i was shocked when i started and you had to talk to customers

- that they would sleep with guys if offered enough money (so ashamed of having that one)

- I also used to think it was weird that girls with boyfriends or husbands danced and couldn't imagine why guys would wanna date strippers LOL. Looking back my misconceptions were so dumb.

That how pretty they were was directly proportional to how much money they made and there was no such thing as an off night. And if dancers had too many bad nights in a row, they'd be fired ......

Funny how ass-backwards I had it! Fired in stripperland? Bah!

I thought you got more than a dollar tip on stage
I didn't know table dances were only a couple of minutes or how much they were.

1. I thought you got paid an hourly wage like any other job

2. Stripping would be "easy" money (I HATE when customers assume that our job is easy)

3. I had no idea to the extent of sketchy things and extras that went on in strip clubs

4. Strippers never had boyfriends or husbands and if they did the guy would have to be a loser

5. Strippers had come from bad backgrounds and had mostly grown up poor (I thought that would be the only excusable thing to get into stripping)

Yeah my biggest misconception was that I wouldnt have to work for the money...yeah right!!

That all managers would try to take advantage of the girls and turn us into prostitutes...

That is was similar to a regular nightclub and we would get paid just to dance on the floor the whole time.

It's all stage work and men just throw money at you - I wish it was that way.

OMG, thats another thing I thought. That you made tons of $$$ on stage and that little routines were your bread and butter. I didn't realise the bulk of your $ came from lap dances.

Haha, I thought that way too.:D

I also thought that you made buttloads of money every night and that a bad night was like 4-5 hundred dollars.

That table dance meant dance on tables.

That guys just waved you over and were all over you to give them a dance.

I didnt realize you had to pay to work there, I thought that you just kept what you earned.

I thought that girls wore glitter and oil to make themselves look sexy.

I thought you had to be cute with a near perfect body to strip. Boy was I wrong.

I didn't think that me being black would be anywhere near the issue that it is. I did not think racism existed in the SC.

I thought at least 1 guy would be buying my undies everynight.

I thought you just walked around the stage posing while loads of bills filled the stage. You didn't have stop dancing and come over for the tips.

I didn't think guys could touch the strippers anywhere ever. At any club in the U.S.

Its weird how we all thought a lot of the same things.

1- I thought every stripper had big fake boobs and looked like he stereotypical blonde stripper
2- That I only needed to be pretty to be showered with money, no need to be nice, funny, or even smile.
3- Thought that I would make new female friends at work
4- Why did I even think that I would meet nice handsome guys to go out with during my off days?!
5- That I would leave with $500 every shift without exception

oh and that you had to know how to dance and do pole tricks as a newbie.

NOPE. :D

-You are allowed to walk around topless/nude
-You gotta dance on a table during table-dance
-Club pays dancers, the rest of income is made from stage
-All strippers are pros on pole.
-Also they are all SUPER-hot tan blondes with huge fake tits. Extremely mean, cutthroat and bitchy, who are busy, talking shit about each other and fighting. Sometimes they blow managers in the office : O

Aurora_Sunset

-That everyone was great at pole and you got tipped tons on stage. Seriously, why does every movie/TV show always show strippers dancing on this packed stage for 1 song and then going back and sitting in a fancy-ass dressing room with their own personal makeup table for an hour between sets? Has it EVER been like that? I doubt it lol

-That club management and bouncers' priorities were having my back... yeah right.

-That guys would actually adhere to the "no-touching" rule most of the time.

-That bachelor party groups would actually be fun.

-That my friends wouldn't denigrate strippers and talk about their tactics for being cheap losers right in front of me... like, really??

1. That I would be expected to act stupid because nobody would want to have a conversation (thank God I was totally wrong! Now I make most of my money talking.)
2. That all the customers would be creepy assholes.
3. That it would be mostly young guys looking to party (haha my customer basis is averaging like 50+ now.)
4. That all the girls would be total bitches (okay some of them are but most are surprisingly nice.)
5. That I would have to walk around with all my money in my g-string all night lol.
6. That lap dances would be some complex elaborate seduction act rather than mostly grinding against their junk repeatedly.
7. That I could never be friends with any of my customers or trust any of them with my personal details.
8. That the bartenders would know to water down my drinks (the ones at this club make them extra strong FML.)
9. That I was too skinny to fit a dancer thong (lol I was so upset when I tried to order them online and they were one size fits all, and I talked to the house mom and she gave me a look like "Are you retarded or just a total narcissist?")
10. That I would live a totally secret second life and never tell anyone (Nowadays I just tell everyone I meet and don't give a fuck anymore. I talk to my grandma about work all the time.)
11. That the drug use was probably exaggerated (A stranger tried to sell me heroin my second week on the job.)
12. That it would make me a worse person (I'm actually a lot more confident and stable since I got over the initial bumps.)
13. That it would make me hate men even more (Some of my customers really give me faith in humanity with their kindness.)
14. That I would never be able to have a boyfriend while working as a stripper (I've since dated an ivy league lawyer and a CEO while stripping.)

That table dances were on tables.
That you mainly had to dance on stage for the majority of your shift.
That you easily made 100000+ p.a and only working part time 2-3 nights.
That when clubs say 'training provided' meant you would actually get some help.
That bucks parties would be good money...coz more guys wanting fun...right????!!
That all dancers were either incredibly classy, smart women OR sad, giant drug addicts with tons of kids.

Prettyglitter
06-30-2015, 07:36 AM
1. That all black club goers made it rain every night. I thought those chicks were racking up constantly but not really lol.
2. That you had to be gorgeous to dance
3. That a lot of girls were doing it just to make it through college (nope)
4. That prostitution was a myth
5. That you actually needed to know how to use the pole and dance in general
6. Ohh I thought I would feel degraded but dancing has boosted my confidence and given me really good people skills. I used to be painfully shy, a lot of people I went to high school with had barely even heard me speak.

I hate to trot out the old cliched line but ....back in the 90s believe it or not in some clubs we would go on for a half hour and have off stage time for a half hour. We'd sit in the back and tweak makeup, change costumes every set, and talk shit! Of course there were no couch dances. You could sit with your reg and hustle tips and tend to his ego (and defend him from other girls).
Club managers and bouncers by and large did look out for us and regularly deposited assholes on the entryway. We didn't tip the bouncers so they didn't have a pimp dynamic to make money. They got a real salary as did the girls.
Bachelor party groups WERE fun because they were heavily monitored. At my favorite club the manager picked girls based on the contact level the guys wanted. He had a stable of separate girls for the high contact dances who were not allowed to work the club, only those specific parties. So when I was booked I get a $50 fee for two sets and all my tips. Then I'd work in the larger main club for the rest of the night.Once the party was over they generally stayed in the building joining the regular patrons so we got 2-3 more hours of tips from them.

So these scripts are based on the old school 80-90s clubs that actually existed. In the Northeast Corridor they existed. I saw for myself they existed in Texas as well. Greed fucked the clubs up. Period. It never had to be the way it is now.

that you have to be a 6 foot tall, blonde super model to get hired

that all strippers wear glitter/love glitter

that strippers had their own cute little chairs and mirrors in the dressing room like actresses (maybe some are like that but most of the places i worked at are just counters with girls' shit thrown all over them) haha

that all strippers wear these intricate costumes and outfits like cop/maid/nurse, and they all have perfect make up and hair at all times

that men just throw money at strippers and they don't really have to do anything but look pretty on stage. HA!

I had most of the common misconceptions that have already been shared. Except for this:

I thought that Strippers danced really fast- like rave club dancing. I had to get my hubby to demonstrate how slowly and what a lap dance looked like for me cause I just couldn't conceive of what it looked like or why guys would be entertained by such slow dancing/stalking around and posing (to his credit he put on a great show :D).

I agree with others that I never realized it was a sales job! I also had the misconception that no one could possibly do this job (dancing naked for a few measly dollar bills) unless it was their last resort and that strippers were all strung out on drugs and alcohol and desperately needed help to get out of their self-destructive lifestyle.

I also thought strippers "act like strippers" all the time in their daily life.....turns out the women I see acting like a stereotypical stripper OTC (e.g. flashing their boobs for attention or acting trashy in public) are most likely NOT strippers.

I didn't know how much small talk would be involved I never visualized actually having to have conversations with the customers when I was young and thought about stripping lol.

I thought I had to be able to do really cool intricate tricks on the pole to be hired at a club.

I thought all strippers would have fake boobs, blonde hair, orange spray tans, etc.
