I just finished Towelhead by Alicia Erian. The story approaches tween sexuality, racism, politics ans sexual abuse all in one narrative. VERY good read, very thought provoking.

^^^ Oh lord, no, it's a bit heavy for kids. Or maybe we don't give them enough credit, you know?
The first novel that was ever given to me was Jane Eyre.

I'm not sure if it counts, as it is a re-read, but I just finished "Fall On Your Knees".

I'm reading the Law of Attraction.....its kind of creepy bc of how it was written. I think I'm going to take it back to Barnes and Noble and get the secret.

How is it creepy? :O

I just finished reading Lily Burana's Strip City and absolutely loved it. The fact she too had a punk rock background made it even more endearing. ;D

Currently re-reading Acid Dreams: The Complete Social History of LSD: The CIA, the Sixties, and Beyond by Martin A. Lee. I love the 60s!

Next on my list I'm reading this:

The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future (Or, Don't Trust Anyone Under 30) by Mark Bauerlein

I read a couple books a week. I'm addicted!

I'm reading several books as usual, I have total ADD. The first one is "The Divorce Remedy" by Michele Weiner Davis. This is the 3rd time I've read it through. AMAZING book on improving your marriage (or relationship). It saved my marriage once already (and I'm not exaggerating).

I'm also reading "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" (HH recommendation).

And finally - an Ann Rule book of short true crime stories. :) Phew!

"The Room" by Hubert Selby Jr.
I just started it. Supposedly Selby called it "the mosr disturbing book of all time" & couldn't even read it himself until a decade after publishing it.

He's famous for writing Requiem for a Dream, so that might give an idea of the variety of fucked-up that this book is.

The first novel that was ever given to me was Jane Eyre.

I'm not sure if it counts, as it is a re-read, but I just finished "Fall On Your Knees".

I read Jane Eyre when I was 13, and I adored it. I actually remember sitting in the rain at horseshow, reading that book. It's something if I remember reading it, you know?

And "Fall on Your Knees" I read last fall...I remember reading that one on the plane home from my friends place, who lives out East (appropriately). It made me cry.

I'm just finishing "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy, and fuck. Lot of blood! spoiler. I thought "The Road" was dark...

I'm also reading "Middlemarch" in between bouts of Cormac-carnage. I can only read so much of that at once. I like having two books on the go, because I am a nerd.

I thought about reading this book and then I read some of the reviews on Amazon and that scared me enough to not read it....ever. The graphic torture of an animal would probably scar me for life.

The Garden of Last Days, by Andre Dubus III--a wonderfully dark and strong book. I'll also join Nikki-lace-7 and read All Quiet On The Western Front again soon...it still feels like the most powerful anti-war book I've read.

"Life of Pi", but it seems so random and light that I'll leave it for my 17 hour plane ride coming up in about a month.. "50 Great Short Stories" off and on. *yawn*. I don't have that much selection here in Asia for English books..

Just finished The Control of Candy Jones. Amazing true story of a model in the 40's who was tapped by the CIA to deliver covert messages. A psychiatrist, through hypnosis and drug therapy separated her into 2 distinct personalities. Only one knew about the details of her CIA work...so when she was captured in Thailand and tortured for info her main personality couldnt tell them anything.

Un-fucking-believable what they did to this girl. The story is chilling...and a lot of it is in her own words. From both personalities.

Multiple personalities is a passion of mine....I wanted to specialize in it when I got my degree in psych. I still would if I knew how...and had the time and money to get my PhD that I would DEF need to do it.

I'm currently reading a GREAT book "Gang Leader for a Day" by Sudhir Venkatesh. It describes the research by this grad student in the housing projects of Chicago during the height of the crack epidemic. It's about gangs, the way they are run, the personal relationships between people and the economic effects.... it is VERY readable and gripping, and a lot of what he writes about is totally unpredecented in terms of biography.

If you have ever seen the Wire or read Freakonomics, you will LOVE this book.

I am reading "Youth In Revolt" by C. D. Payne. HILARIOUS! It is the diary of a 14 year old boy, his crummy life and the deviant paths he choses to get him closer to the 'love of his life.' Very entertaining if you want a laugh.

I'm looking at something a little more heavy for my next read... I will look for Anomar's suggestion on my next bookstore trip :)

I was a lil dissapointed with this book. didnt meet my expectations really and no I dont really rad a lot of travelors memoirs but now I want to find a better one.

Im currently reading Living Alone - And Loving it! by Barbara Feldon. Its a short read but so far very inspiring.

Strip City ain't bad at all for a traveler's memoir.

Audacity of Hope is currently on my nightstand. I ordered "Hot, Flat and Crowded" today from Amazon, so that will be my next read.

I agree, Strip City was a good read and I really enjoyed it. I lent it to a dancer friend a few years ago and never got it back :-\

But like CK says, it's a bit outdated when comparing it to what strippers go threw today. I think the author, "Lilly", posted here like a million years ago.

by Victor Gischler -- check it out:

"The highways are lined with abandoned automobiles; electricity is generated by indentured servants pedaling stationary bicycles. What little civilization remains revolves around Joey Armageddon's Sassy A-Go-Go strip clubs, where the beer is cold, the lap dancers are hot, and the bouncers are armed with M16s."

LOLs galore. And gore.

ok, i want to read that! check out craig clevenger's 'the contortionsist's handbook'. i just read another carlton mellick iii- you would have liked it. i want to get his book 'satan burger', which that quote from your book really reminds me of.

and currently, ladies, i am reading 'the jungle' by upton sinclair.

after that, i will be reading 'in reckless hands' by victoria nourse
