I pay $800 a month in rent, $100 in electric/rent and $100 in phone/internet for my home - so no, cost of living is not TOO high. But I know it's really easy to spend $1400 a month in rent, I have a cheap place. It's also really easy to make enough money per month to pay that, though.

Gruyere cheese is swiss. My maid misses it so I'm hunting it down.

I just got another person to come to my place. I had a girl who did a GREAT job coming for over a year and then she moved back east. She was awesome. She did cut the sprouts off my 8 year old spider plant though ( spiders take years to grow and have " babies" ) , so I've asked the new person to not do anything to the plants.

I'm the same as Philly. I pre-clean ( duclutter and put everything in a reasonable order ) . The new girl charges $20 per hour . The other person actually charged less , but I would tip her on top of it because I felt like she wasn't charging enough.

Lena : It's up to you whether you want to be there or not. Sometimes I'll work on things in the other room with the door closed and sometimes I'll leave. I can't relax or by lazy ( just can't ) if they are right there working but there is certainly nothing wrong with it! If it were me, I'd prefer no one home, so I try to leave unless I have a project that needs attention. I'm also a really relaxed customer though ( I never watch what anyone is doing over their shoulder ).

$20 isn't a lot. $20 is only for billable hours. Just like any other business owner, they put a lot of other time in ( answering phone, driving to locations, doing paperwork, doing taxes, buying supplies ) ..... so .... no $20 isn't " great money " . It's just $20 an hour billable. I bet by the time they put in all the other time of running a business, it's more like $13 give or take that they actually make.

At any rate ......... I think it's awesome to be able to delegate out something you hate,so I highly recommend getting a maid if you happen to hate cleaning. It makes me happy.

I think you found a keeper. You did not even have to ask her to clean the litter boxes and she did it regardless so she must not be too put off by it. Plus, you are paying her well so I would not feel bad, personally.
