New Orleans will always hold a huge place in my heart. It has always been my favorite city. I'll never forget climbing into St. Louis Cemetary 1 at night to give Marie Laveaux my dreadlocks that I'd cut off. Somehow I knew right where the cemetary was and walked right to it from the Quarter. I think that place is somehow part of my being, like it's in my blood or something. I've never felt more at home anywhere but I haven't settled there because of all this dramatic weather and poverty. How sad!
When I heard about Katrina, I was in tears. This instance is no different. It is my sincere hope that all the homes and families are safe from this.
I can't imagine WHY this thread had to be turned into drama but that's SW now I guess. We can't discuss Kleenex without someone wanting to argue. Shame on you bitches and all my best to the residents of NOLA.

NOLA's primary problem isn't its elevation. Its that the measures that the city has taken to protect itself aren't good enough and aren't being properly maintained.
Half of the Netherlands is below sea level and after a Katrina caliber disaster in the 1950's the Dutch took it upon themselves to build the most advanced flood control system in the world.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000238/
So it can be done, its just a matter of whether its cost effective to do so, and whether our government will commit those resources to do it. Don't hold your breath.
so by the logic displayed....
LA, TX, MS, AL, FL shouldn't have people living here because it is hurricane alley.
Disasters can happen anywhere. I don't think its wise to dismiss though, that they're a more probable occurrence in some places more than others. It does dismay me how many of our citizens continue to place themselves into these "more likely" areas, seemingly without taking the risk into account.

Poor Florida has been slammed over and over again with weather - New Orleans was discussed and petted, during Katrina when the real bad stuff was happening in Biloxi/Gulfport ( I was there. )
Argument is not going to help anything. This is just bad.. making it worse is not going to help. There's not much anyone can do against any sort of natural disaster besides GET OUT and offer to help the bruised, battered and emotionally devastated.
Property can be replaced. People and critters can not.
Please everyone in NO, Florida and the Ms Gulf Coast, be safe and just remember that if you need something let someone know.
Stay safe and Blessings!

My neighbors are from NO, and they had a bunch of friends show up yesterday afternoon loaded down with everything they could fit in their trucks and vans. They said it took 18 hours to get here. I make that drive all the time and it normally takes 9 hours tops. I can't imagine sitting on the interstate that long trying to make it up to TN.

And as one hurricane crashes ashore, another is born. Start your good karma and prayers for Florida and possibly points north of there.

I think our focus here should be on those who are being forced to evacuate...they lived in NO for a reason, and we are not to judge them for their choices, but we should be showing compassion.
A lot of us do things that others don't understand, but when we are hit with hardship, it is nice to know that people are willing to help us, be it by saying a prayer, offering a home, lighting a candle, or just checking up.
So if any of you are from NO, please check in, and keep us updated on the goings-on.

I've got a friend down that way that I *know* would never leave his home because he's hard headed, and he's not answering the phone or his text messages. He was yesterday, but nothing today at all. Dammit.

Damn Ginger, I pray he's ok; and you hear from him soon. I have been watching all day, and while the levees are overflowing, it's not as bad currently as it was with Katrine, thank goodness.
I will keep you both in my thoughts babe.

When we had a bad hurricane the cell phone towers went out and the landlines did too. Thats probably the case, I wouldn't worry too much.

That's what I'm telling myself. Especially since the cell phone company he has totally sucks when the weather is good, so it being effed up now is quite likely.

A good friend of mine mentioned Hanna and I thought she meant the one that fizzled out, 'Flo' maybe? I forget the name, it was a joke as storms go after all the hoopla, though not to the people on that island it hit before fizzling out.
This is the worst part of the hurricane season, and one thing's for sure, people somewhere will be hit with some serious shit before it's over. We can only hope not too many have to lose their lives.

nola didnt suffer any levee problems except for some
water washing over the industrial canal (not breaching. )
---according to the radio
lots of trees and power lines down. only two people so far
in my neck of the woods died due to the storm. they were
in a house and a great big tree smashed down.
other than that, it SEEMS to be pretty calm.
luckily we've got a little more time in nola for them
to work on improving the levee system.

Not so, no joke. "Becoming stationary" (as Hanna is presently doing) is NOT the same as fizzling out. Hurricane force winds still exist, the next 12 hrs or so will be critical with a new direction & speed being more clearly defined.
Either way, best wishes to FL residents that Hanna steers out to sea, or fizzles. Best wishes for safe return for all Gustav evacuees, which is now downgraded to Tropical Storm. Prior poster(s) noaa.gov link is a good 1 for keeping abreast of hurricane movements/changes.

We dont get hurricanes here I cant imagine how frightening that would be. I hope there aren't any human casualties resulting from this one (I know there sadly has already been in other countries). Be safe SW'ers in that area.

You don't? They call them cyclones down there, but aside from the fact that they move and spin the opposite direction, composition wise they're the exact same thing.

Unless you were referring specifically to the Melbourne area. By the looks of those maps Northern Australia gets hit all the time.

Ugh...some people here havent recovered from Wilma yet. And the way my luck has been....my house will take a direct hit from them all this year....ugh. Or it'll stop me from traveling since we always get hit worse at the end of season and I have a crapload of traveling to do in October. Great.

Every 2 weeks me and fiance go out of town and it takes us 5 hours to get to where we are going . We usually come back the same day.So that is 10 hours of sitting. We always joke about how we can't wait till we get home just so we can sit on the sofa haha.
Do hurricanes hit the DFW area ? Im a bit worried since I have never been in bad weather like that.
Corgan

^ i wouldn't be too worried iris. it would prob be a tropical depression by the time it got there. i'm no expert on it though.

No, no! I forget the damned name--I meant the one that was supposed to be a hurricane but wasn't, that hit here as a 'tropical storm' 3 weeks ago or so, but did kill some people long before getting close to Florida--which is of course no fucking joke at all--but by the time it got here, considering the media hype it was receiving, it was a fucking joke.
I mean people were staggering drunk all over downtown when the 'eye' hit, the cops were using bullhorns to try to get them back inside or into shelter. "This storm is not over yet!" on the bullhorns. But it was, all it did was rain some more and blow a bit.
Real hurricanes or cyclones are nothing to joke about, of course. Unfortunately, all the nonstop media Hurricane Hype barrages encouraging fear and desperation is like 'the boy crying wolf' sometimes, and can breed complacency.

I was thinking something along these lines today. On the one hand it was fortunate that Gustav ended up not being as devastating as was feared (thanks to not hitting NOLA head-on, and losing some of its steam prior to landfall). But on the other hand, much of that "fortune" could be attributed to better planning, fortification of storm defenses after Katrina, and getting many more people evacuated well in advance.
I wonder how many people that did evacuate were now thinking "I should've ridden it out" because it was "just" a Cat 2 when it struck land.
