If we're having a discussion about the significance of 12/21/12 on the world, I don't think anyone should be calling anyone else's contributions to the discussion 'crazy'.

Does anyone remember that group of people years ago who thought the end of the world was coming to they packed their suitcases (I dont know why they thought they could take belongings with them) and they stood waiting for it?

no, but I remember some nutty cult leader preaching in 1997 that the world was going to end on a certain day, so everyone who wanted to be saved had to quit their jobs, sell everything they owned, dress in white and climb trees so they'd be closer to Jesus when He came back.

Some people actually did it. :O Can't imagine how awful they felt the next day, when they had to face the fact that the world was going on as usual and they'd been dumb enough to sell everything they owned and quit their jobs.

Probably, they were supposed to 'donate' the proceeds to the leader... :P

I could be wrong, but I don't think that was her point, I think she meant that tother European cultures had been to America before ol' Christopher.

If I remember correctly, some Vikings even briefly had a small settlement somewhere in on the coast of Canada. Lief Ericson (sp) I think it was. I think he's supposed to have been the first European to make it to the Americas.

Thank you. I just finished American History 17A (Pre-Civil War History) class a few weeks ago so its all fresh in my mind. I could go grab my book and have some backup if needed but I dont think that's necessary.

I just want to point out that the Y2K 2000 fiasco apocalyptic sensationalism was a result of a prediction brought about by technology... not thousands of years of cultures across the globe that have parallels in their stories and calendars, not to mention Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce and various other seers of the world predicting MANY things that have come true, also predicted that 2012 will be a volatile turning point in global consciousness.

it's way different than the numbers on a computer changing to "00" and technology geeks thinking their program will cause an infrastructure collapse.

I still wonder what happened to all those people who thought 1999 was the end.

So when 2013 rolls around, for all who sincerely believed this, I am really interested in what they are gong to do. I mean beyond saying "oops" of course.

Or it could just be some people have deluded themselves and imagine a change that is no different then any other year. My money is on that one.

I know this won't clear anything up because some people don't read whole threads, but the theory behind astrological ages is thus (pulled from wiki because it's late and they say it better than I could) :

"An astrological age is a time period in astrology which is believed by some to parallel major changes in the Earth's inhabitants' development, particularly relating to culture, society and politics. There are twelve astrological ages corresponding to the twelve zodiacal signs in astrology. At the completion of one cycle of twelve astrological ages, the cycle repeats itself. Astrological ages occur because of a phenomenon known as the precession of the equinoxes. One complete period of this precession is called a Great Year or Platonic Year[1] of about 25,920 years."

People who believe in this do not think that a giant clock strikes at the beginning of the new age or that the earth is destroyed or that a five headed demon will eat your dog. They believe it is a cultural, spiritual shift that will manifest very gradually.

Now please, more comments about how nothing will happen that day, just like y2k...Or else I really WILL think the world is ending :D

Eratosthenes accurately measured the circumference of the earth 200 years before the birth of Christ using shadows, measurements, angles, elevations, and math in Egypt at the summer solstice. Had it not been for the bulge at the middle of the earth, he would've been spot on. Pretty amazing.

Indeed. The earth is technically an ovoid, not round, due to that very slight "bulge" in the middle.

I recently read Daniel Pinchbeck's "2012: The Return of Quetzacoatl" recently and he writes about how he thinks the event will bring about a general massive shift in collective consciousness for the better. Interesting book and I recommend it to anyone who has any interest in the topic.

I guess the only way to really find out is to wait and see...

I really enjoyed that book, the only misgiving i had was how the last 100 pages or so are about him really wanting to sleep with some chick but his baby mama wouldn't let him...

Other than that -- I've seen him speak live 2x and I think he's a great ambassador for the cause. (Breaking Open the Head is one of my favorite books.)

I suspect that if the earth stopped spinning, it would settle to a rounder shape and be a trimmer, fitter planet. But when it stopped spinning, we would all be catapulted off into space. So that would be a bummer. Maybe it'll happen in 2012.

Now that would be some shit right there! Maybe we'd all be sucked into our ideal lives on a happy parallel universe via countless black holes created via the Large Hadron Collider....

Damn, I just came up with that and I'm not even on any sort of mind-altering substances!

This is not a reply specifically toward you DR, just a general point.

--

In the Universe I live in the astrological bodies do go through cycles. For example:

The earth (and other planets) circle the sun. The moon circles the earth.

The planets may well at lines up up with each other in various ways, which can lead to certain interesting effects like eclipses.

Sometimes our planets line up in various ways and invariably people predict magic things, or predict catastrophe, and yet, it never has happened:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070819215840AAkJjch

All of this is because of one simple fact. Bodies in our universe that move in orbits that are circular (or elliptical, or the point is - GO AROUND EACH OTHER). If people would just spend like a few classes studying, they would know, apparent patterns will happen when bodies move around each other in de-synchronized ways and you wait long enough.

Let me get right to the point. I believe something magic/spiritual is associated with these patterns the same way I believe something magic happens every morning when, amazingly, the sun rises on the horizon. And probably there are cultures that do think that it is a magical god and something magic happens to all of society each day, or each year. And honestly... my wish is for the day when our society has out grown such utter nonsense. It does nothing to advance our culture or lives, but it does go on promoting belief in mental fictions in preference to fact/reality.

It will be the end of an era and the begining of a new one, if we will want to see, by my opinion. Pretty much, like Keira pointed out. What exectly might happen, I have no idea, cause I don't understand enough.
As I read somewhere, Mayan calendar has already ended around the year 1987 and we are now in the time of apocalipse, time and events are accelarating. The old concepts are falling apart, until the final battle, when the new World will emerge. I guess that would than be called Armageddon.
I think, recent events could be indicators, that something is really going on and that the time, when we will have to choose betven survival and extinction, is inevitabely approaching.
