There are many reasons speculated but the only actual reason given by our Holy Book is 'because it is holy'.
While many Jews have speculated WHY it is holy, none can rewrite the book, so that remains the only reason. There are many health benefits (like meat and dairy proteins are not easily broken up by the body if eaten together) and many religious ideas (to separate Jews from their neighbours), but it's all theory.

so there's no elaboration other than basically "you just can't"? that perplexes me.
Lysondra

You don't need elaboration. Your faith in G-d that it is truly what's right is what guides you. You follow it because you have faith that what he said is true, no matter how silly it sounds.
G-d only asks you do your best, he doesn't demand perfection.
If G-d says it's Holy - it is. We don't argue it and would do anything to be seen holy in the eyes of G-d. Besides, it is a small sacrifice in the scheme of life.

Only on SW could a thread on fast food employee service drift off into discussions on vegetarianism and what Jews can eat. God, I love this place sometimes.

Fucking Hell Keira, this is a thread about Fast Food service and employees, not your personal vendetta over eating deadcowburgers and karma. Nobody asked your opinion on eating meat in this thread, so stop your holier-than-thou attitude.
Fuck. I was going to tell txchick to back off of all the snark in your direction, but once again you've managed to make an ass out of yourself and prove her point ::).
I don't understand why they dont just put each other on ignore.*shrugs*

HAHAHAHHAHAH fuck yes!!!
my friend and i once made animal burgers. instead of buns we used beef patties, and our burgers contained grilled chicken steaks, bacon, grilled onion and loads of mustard and ketchup. her parents said it was possibly the same burger that killed elvis, we said it was fucking amazing }:D
Glad someone found it amusing! :D
Those burgers sound absolutely divine.

They should, but then if Keira started putting people like txchick on ignore, she'd have to put a lot of others on too out of the same principle. Probably would be too bored. But anyways.....
The majority of the time, I do get my order screwed up at fast food places. And yeah, it's annoying. But respect goes a long way. I've been there, and I know what it's like to be treated like crap all day and hardly anybody treats you like a human being.
Do you know what brightened my day and shocked the hell out of me working FF? People telling me to have a nice day or asking how I was doing that day.
So I do this most of the time when I go. And you should see the look of shock and gratitude I get from FF employees. I might get my food wrong, but they work hard to please me because I showed them some humanity.
I ALWAYS tell people to have a nice day, it's just habit. I have noticed that when FF workers have told me to have a nice day and I say it back to them a lot of them are just surprised. It's sad that the majority of people just don't have manners anymore :(

i refuse to get drive-through. i have to watch what they're doing to my food. i moved to florida from new york and it urks me that they dont have to wear gloves while handling the food. i have a couple of friends that work/worked in the fast food industry. seems like everyone is just trying to get by. be it in life or just the damn shift.

the gloves thing..doesn't really matter much, unfortunatly. I've witnessed people with gloves on take out the trash and go back to preparing food wearing the same gloves. ( At subway I saw this)
Or handle money with gloves on and go make food. The gloves dont mean a damn thing if your still using the same dirty gloves.
So I actually prefer to not watch them prepare my food. I dont wanna think abotu the unhygene practices or I probably woulnd't eat it. And I love my fast food.
LOL. After reading this thread last night at4am I decided I had a craving for french friies and me and the dog went out in search of a 24 hour fast food place.

I'm really patient with FF workers. If it takes longer than normal for my order I either ask politely what's up or wait. If they are doing all they can to keep things together behind the counter and get my6 order to me and it takes a bit longer or they are new and just learning the ropes I'm real patient.
They are just trying to get up in the world why make it harder for them by being a dick. I pretty much always say thank you with a smile when they give me my food.
It's good to practice positivity.

Certain people often become impatient/hostile when they're hungry or rushed (or both), and fast food drive-thru lines seem to fuel their rage.
FF employees are a convenient target for customers who get off on toxic emotional dumping, and it's a wonder that more FF workers don't snap and climb through the drive-thru window after dealing with several douches/douchettes per day...

Anyhow, I am surprised my little lunchtime rant turned into a 4-page debate on fast food. Only on SW.
I have resolved not to have a public rant if it involves anything less than a terminal disease or loss of a limb.
Actually, your burger is more probably deadcastratedbullburger than deadcowburger. I mean, you can expect having ground-up cow, but it's more likely ground-up steer. Which isn't helpful for pro-animal sensitivities, I know.

100 times more expensive means 100 times tastier, I'm sure!
Have you ever been to a Brazilian churrascaria ("house of barbeque") restaurant, aviendha? It's possible that even a staunch vegan like keira might be tempted by the awesome array of roasted meats carved right at your table...
we love our meat... I LOVE to go to family bbqs... it's all different kinds of meat cooked to perfection yum. making me hungry just thinking about it.

I try to always be extra nice to FF workers... I always say hi, please, thank you, have a great day... and rarely do I get it returned. I guess it's not a huge deal, just a little rude.

Wow what a thread LOL!
I'm always as pleasant as I can be to employees. Their job already sucks and is tough. I'd rather be that person they make a nice exception for/do thngs right or well for if I'm a regular customer) Trust me, from my time in the service industry, it can make a BIG difference.
You really don't want to fuck with the people who make our food or handle things that matter to you. It's their *job*, not *who they ARE*. They're not pieces of crap, and most aren't stupid. (Those who are actually kind of dumb need even more of a break and... They might really be doing the best they can!)
Just hope you're not the "asshole of the day" when that service worker gets tired of the bullshit and decides to dump that milkshake all over you and the interior of your car because you were a bitch at the speaker. (Oopsie! Accident! Sooo sorry!)
Oh, and Jewish people shouldn't eat meat and dairy together due to prohibitions against cooking meat/eating meat in/with "the milk of it's mother". (I'm kind of surprised no one else knew this... I'm not jewish)

I dont eat this sort of junk food often but when I do it's usually drive thru McDonalds and they nearly always leave something out of the order which is really annoying. Now I check the contents of the bag before I drive off.

Okay. My ranty story about ff. Taco Bell Hell.
I accidently left my purse in our local TB. Got a few miles away, realized it, and called on my cell phone. It was really slow in there, not alot of custies. I was panicking and got this guy, Josh, on the phone. I explained to him what happened and where I was sitting, he put the phone down to go look for my purse. Josh came back to the phone, said my purse was still sitting there and he would put it behind the counter while I turned around and came back. Less than 5 minutes later, I was back in there to retrieve it. 'Josh' happened to be the shift leader (it said it on his name tag). I fell all over myself thanking him, trying to give him a tip.....Later realized I was missing 20 bucks out of my purse. I know it was in there cause it was the money I paid for our meals in there with. I had the two twenties and put my dollars and change back from the meal in my pocket leaving only the 20 in my purse. :-\ Guess he got his tip.

I'd probably never tell anyone this IRL but when i was like 13-14 i lived with my boyfriend and we were always late on rent. I needed to make $150 in about 1week which seemed like alot of money at the time. anyway i got a job at chick-fil-a..i ended up climbing out the drive through window on my first day and running to the foot locker next door to call my bf to pick me up. he thought it was hilarious. the people were so MEAN to me! one lady even called me a douchebag cause her order took more then 3 mins or something...

Ooo! Fun fast food story. last night my girl and I were going through the Taco Bel drive-through and both the money-taking chick and the give-you-ya-food chick were freaking out about the car ahead of us. I guess it was like 5 young-ass punks who were drunk and high as hell, all drinking beers openly, trying to pick them up, being fucking assholes, et cetera. Their bill was $5 something and they tried to pay with two tens.
We called 911 on them and a cop pulled them over *right* outside the parking lot within seriously like a minute or two. Then two more cops! We sat and watched for a while just for entertainment. We called the fast food chicks when we got home and told them the fuckers all got arrested. I hope it made their night.
Also, McD's fries ARE NOT vegan. Cam is right. Milk. In fucking fries. Cause that's fucking necessary.

^ McD eliminated the guilty protein from the frying oil additive. I researched this myself. So I think it's ok for vegans now.
Even before this change was made, The Angel of the Century -- who has a life-threatening allergy to all milk proteins -- ate the fries with no ill effects at all.

Although Cam already posted it here I will repeat. From the McD's website:
French Fries:
Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*), citric acid (preservative), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), salt. Prepared in vegetable oil ((may contain one of the following: Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness), dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent). *
CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK (Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients).

There is milk in the McD's fries. They are not vegan. The "beef" flavoring is now made of milk protein and wheat.

^^^Why not? I'm vegan and I'd kill for some McD's fries and a coke. Like, there are people I'd actually kill. I'd say almost every vegan I know would will be at McDonald's the day the fries go vegan. Not everyone is like, well, some of the people here :)
Vegan doesn't mean you only eat alfalfa sprouts :)

McD released a different ingredient list after the lawsuit(s) in an effort to keep it from happening again.
I guess they reversed themselves and decided it would be easier to announce ingredients rather than change their production process. But how many people really read ingredient lists? I examine them like crime scene evidence given the dire consequences if milk slips by...
And I've heard some vegans eat very well indeed. :)

we have a wendy's here I damn near live at. Anyways, I never once complained until like a week or so ago when they royally fucked up my order. THey scare me that's why I never complain. I'm talking fresh prison release, neck and knuckle tats ..and "What do you want?! " screamed at you when they take your order.
Anyways I was like ummm yeah you screwed my order up...girl said "just pull up" and when I did she was like "what did we forget" ..i told her (and had the wrong stuff ready to give back when she said) " Ah here you go ...keep that stuff"
Score!
That's all I have to ad. I love fast food, Sushi and french fries

I hated when people would complain and yell to me asking "Does this look like there's chicken on this taco.." I would just wanna go off and be like..i just work here..i make the food not the rules of how much chicken goes on the damn tacos!! My manager is watching me and breathing down my neck about food costs..HELL!!!! Or they ask whats taking so long.....well lets see here...you ordered 20 tacos, 15 burritos. 8 large fries and 5 large drinks....let's do the math..you tell me why its taking so long!!!! i did work at arbys for one day, the pressure made me crack and i broke out in tears. i forgot about that til just now... i guess i suppressed that memory!!!
i remember i was trying to get the fry section down, minding my own business. this ghetto whore with some serious bling in her face, on her neck, and on her fingers was turning in an application. i just looked at her, i've been told i have a mean look on my face all the time, i swear i don't try!!! she went OFF on me, asking me "why the fuck aren't you smiling?? this is a place of business!" so i totally started to fuck up on the fries.... then i started crying...

now i remember why i have such an appreaciation for food industry workers.

Hmmm...I've never had that many bad experiences with fast food. I've never had any really rude people and most of the time my order is right, and I have "complicated" orders. I worked at McDonalds and Arby's and it was truly awful. Its not THAT hard to make mistakes either, so I am sensitive to FF workers. I wouldn't put up with anyone being rude to me for no reason, and I wouldn't feel safe eating the food if someone was giving me attitude when I was being nice.
