Peanut butter is awesome. It is pretty calorie-dense though, so eat in moderation. It has tons of protein and its consistency keeps you sated for a pretty decent amount of time.

peanut butter is the shiz, the bees knees, the apple of my eye..
and as a result i can't eat it too much :P
yeah peanut butter is good - have you ever read any bodybuilding/fitness models forums? they rave about organic peanut butter like there's no tomorrow (killer breakfast - 1/4C oats, 1 T PB, 1/2 Banana, protein powder - nuked with water... soooo good)
ok I'm jumping on this bandwagon too!
no more:
chocolate
bread (except wheat free)
ice cream
soda
ranch dressing
thousand island dressing
sugary jam
potatoes in any form
LOTS more:
homemade vegetable soup
fresh, lean meat
fruit
eggs
soy milk
tofu
nuts
seeds
pulses

I started to eat clean about three years ago and the improvement I felt was immediate and noticeable. I cut out ALL sugar, this includes cane sugar and honey. Sugar kills the immune system (I also know this cuz my dad has cancer and he's on a no sugar diet to boost his immunity). So instead of sugar, or splenda (it was developed originally as ant poison), or aspartame, I use Stevia. It's a natural herb and it's also fiber. It's an acquired taste, but I'm used to it now and it's sooo worth it in my coffee in the morning.
Then when I am tempted to put crap into my body, I consciously ask myself "will this benefit my body in any way, what will be the affects of this on my body?" And that helps me a LOT.
Then there are times when I say "screw it. If I'm Pms'ing, dammit, I'm gonna do it right." So I eat gobs of chocolate and chips for a day or so and get back on track...not before breaking out and feeling disgusting of course.
I also added flax seed to my diet..it's like a little miracle food. And of course, my probiotics which I swear by. ::) They have made the biggest difference in my health...that and no sugar.
I'll have to look into Stevia. My grandparents love splenda (despite how gross it tastes) and I wouldn't mind finding them an alternative.
Flax seed is awesome. I put it on salads, in pasta, whatever.

Is natural organic peanut butter bad for you? I eat it with apples to get some protein. What do all of you gals know about peanut butter? I've recently come across a few things that have insinuated that peanut butter isn't so great. anyone know about that?
It's fatty, but it's not bad for you. Just eat it in moderation.

+1 on the stevia
I've been doing great. Sometimes I get on a roll with work outs and clean diet. I'm going to ride it as long as I can.
I started with candy, now I'm going to add (or subtract actually) fast food. I have almost stopped eating fast food without trying, so I'm going to give myself until the end of the month.
Thanks for the thread UV!
edit:
d'oh, had some fun size candy bars

Glad people are getting something out of this thread :) I've yet to cut the soda :-\ Maybe I'm just not ready yet. maybe once I'm done doing my Nutrition assignment I'll start. It requires me to eat exactly like I usually do with no changes in my diet, so I can't start anything yet.

OUT
Jack in the box milkshakes - I get them at least 3x week. Mostly because the place is right across from my club and the only place open at 2am. After I move this week I should beable to cut it. No more driving 1.5+hours to and from work :) yay!
IN
veggies
fruits - I really need to work on both of these. The problem is everytime I buy them it goes bad before I even finish half of it. So I just don't buy it because I'm wasting money. And its not like I can tear off 1 banana from the bunch or cut a brocolli stem in half at the store:D
Plan of action for fruit: banana chips and bake fruit into cookies and breads. I was thinking of substituting cranberries into oatmeal raisen cookies. I tried eating dried fruit by itself, but I don't like it.
I don't know what to do about the veggies though. Has anyone tried those Debbie Myers green bags? Do they work? Maybe that will solve my rotten food dilemma.

FUUUCK!!! I messed up and forgot to order a drink with soy. I didn't want to make the barista re-make the drink, so I drank it. Bad me! Bad!
For anyone wondering, I gave in to my craving for a Pumpkin Spice Latte. That was my favorite seasonal drink when I worked in B&N cafe, and it still is. mmmmmmmmmmm

Class was talking about type 2 diabetes last night and it scared the hell out of me.
So today I am going to start tracking my diet (without the class assigning me to) and eat less sugar. Right now I am eating a gala apple :D I never eat fruit! Especially apples. I went to the store and picked 3 different kinds of apples to see what I like best. And soda is GONE from my diet.
This class is the wakeup call I needed. I'm going to kill myself with my eating habits if I don't shape up.

I'm in. Also cutting out soda. I drink 3 two liter bottles of diet pepsi a day. I'm going to replace the soda with Arizona diet green tea and also aim to drink 64 ounces of water per day. Currently, I don't drink any water on a daily basis.
will start tomorrow, Sept. 9th and the goal is to have no soda until the 23rd of september. After that time I will allow myself soda as a treat on occasion but will not keep any in the house.
Thanks, UV. We'll bust the soda addiction together!
I suceeded! No soda, I switched to diet green tea, and have been drinking a gallon of water every day.
I also drink a smoothie every morning to start the day off right, and that discourages unhealthy eating for the rest of the day.
I also cut back to eating pizza once a week instead of daily.

Yay Isabella! I'm very proud of you.
I also wanted to add that I'm going to try to drink less milk (even though I love it, I'm a bit lactose intolerant) by buying half gallons.
I also bought some orange juice that has 50% less sugar.
Isa, what's your smoothie recipe?

09-26-2008, 05:20 PM
1/2 cup of the following:
bananas
strawberries
fat free plain yogurt
( all the above frozen. yes, even the yogurt)
fat free organic milk
2 teaspoons honey
1/2 scoop protien powder
1/2 teaspoon ground flaxseeds
a splash of fibersure
sometimes I add in a few blueberries as well.
it's very delicious, very filling, has about 350 calories, but is a good breakfast and very very healthy. Drinking this each morning really sets me up for the day.
I drink it as I am taking all my vitamins and drinking about 1 liter of water.

Hmm. You freeze the yougurt? Doesn't that make it tough to get only what you need each time?
~Isabella
09-26-2008, 05:52 PM
oh, I should have mentioned that..
I buy a big tub of yogurt and I bought 4 oz. tupperware containers. I divide the yogurt and put the containers in the freezer. I nuke it in the microwave for a few seconds to loosen it up enough to get out.
I freeze the yogurt because that big tub spoils before I can use it all, and I hated throwing it out half full all the time, and plus, if you freeze the yogurt, then the smoothie is thicker, and I like it that way because it feels more like a meal and keeps me full longer and it takes awhile to drink.

I am on a body building program, like pre-show kind of hard core program. I do drink milk (1%) and eat carbs like brown rice and oatmeal but absolutely no:
*Bread
*Refined grains of any kind (pasta, white rice, crackers, cold cereal, flour, cornmeal, tortillas, bagels etc)
*Soft drinks
*Sugar, honey, maple syrup
*pre packaged foods
*flavored yogurt (only plain, non-fat yogurt)
*Hard cheese
*"Diet" foods (like fat-free pudding snacks, sugar free jelly etc)
It is working quite wonderfully! I'm eating tons of fresh fruits and veggies, beans and lentils, potatoes, Oatmeal, brown rice, fat free dairy like cottage cheese and yogurt, lean meat and fish, nuts (especially almonds for their appetite suppressing trait), flax seed, peanut butter and dark chocolate.
I am putting on muscle and reducing fat very quickly now. I'm doubling what I am able to lift in the gym about every two weeks. The cellulite is gone from my butt and thighs (it was there a mere 6 weeks ago, now I've got smooth muscle).
I called a photographer today to set up an appointment for my "after" pictures this November. I've lost 4 inches off my waist in 6 weeks! I was almost 34inches and now I'm down to 29in!
I spend about 1-2 hours exercising a day. 3 days a week it is 2 hours and 3 days it is just 1 hour and I relax one day a week.
I also eat whatever I want that on that no-workout day. I had a HUGE plate of spaghetti last Sunday, and my mom is throwing my Stepdad a b-day party this weekend, so I plan on having some of her yummy roast with gravy, Jello salad as only moms can make it (with lots of whipped topping) and birthday cake for dessert. I also love to have a beer or two on my pig out day.
Having a pig-out day once a week is important so that your metabolism doesn't slow down. The low calorie days will burn fat for a little while, then your body re-sets your caloric needs to that lower point. Shocking your metabolism to ramp back up will not only help you burn fat faster the rest of the time, if will help you gain strength and lean muscle even faster!

I recently learned that a glass of milk does as much damage to your body as 22 strips of bacon! And meat is so fattening that it takes 5 hours for your body to process.
Too much meat or dairy is a BAD thing! The absolute best thing you can do is to limit (or eliminate) your intake of them.
I'm trying to eat dairy only once a week, and meat once a month.

This depends on your ethnic origin. Those with Northern European ancestry should have dairy and avoid wheat due to genetic inability to digest wheat gluten. Their bodies need the dairy because of the calcium vitamin d connection. Cod liver oil and cold water fish contain a lot of vitamin d and can be better absorbed by the body of Northern Europeans when regularly consumed with dairy.
One school of thought is to eat foods that your ethnic ancestors ate. Natural selection has already given you the genes to thrive on that kind of diet.

Don't forget ladies, if you're kicking the sugar habit, you HAVE TO MINIMIZE YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE TOO!!!!! Alcohol has a lot of sugar in it. Good work to all of you in removing soda from your diet. I never drink soda, only water, water and more water, sometimes with some lemon in it.
I'd also like to make a recommendation on a substitute for butter, COCONUT OIL(it of course works better when its still hard). I tried it one night when I made sweet potatoes, and it really is quite good. You can use it on toast too.
Oh, and instead of using butter or vegetable oil to cook, use Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I use this to grease my pans, put it in my veggies and I even cook cakes and brownies with it occasionally when I crave sweets. Keep up the good work Ladies!!!!!

Ok, I'm totally fucked then, cuz I'm very mixed and probobly intolerant to tons of stuff, hahaha. All I know is, I definately look leaner after reducing my dairy intake. And feel a lot less sluggish.
I keep craving cheese though. Makes me wish I were just northern European! :P

I've decided not to buy another package of microwave popcorn. It has 5 g of trans fats. I bought some regular popping corn today. I still want to put butter on it, but no more transfats! I've also been really cutting down on candy and ice cream. I want to de-process my diet. I may try the EVOO for cooking. I love butter but I don't need to swim in it.

^^^I dont think that this is completely true.
I eat mostly meats, beans, veggies, eggs, and not much dairy considering that I am kind of lactose intolerant, and I dont really EVER eat bread or carbs of that sort, so pretty much low-carbish. My sister eats pretty much the exact opposite of me, she LOVES bread, pasta, rice, anything carb-y. And she is not at all lactose intolerant.
When I eat the same type of carbs I feel more tired and lethargic after having them, wheras she feels drained if she doesent have any bread. Also I tend to gain weight very easily if i even think about having a bowl of pasta or couple slices of bread, whereas I can eat fatty cheese and not really gain weight but my sister will pack on the pounds.

I lasted like.... three hours without drinking a Dr. Pepper. So I'm gonna have to try again! I have though, been eating a lot more veggies. So I've made some progress I suppose. I LOOOVE sandwiches... so what I've been doing the past few days is eating veggie subs. Lots of bell peppers (because lately I'm obsessed with bell peppers lol), onions, tomatos, olives, all kinds of yummy veggie goodness. It's helped me get in a bigger variety of vegetables.
One thing I've done is cut out dairy. I'm lactose-intolerant... but would still pour milk all over my cheerios. Then wonder why I felt so sick... but I bought some soy milk today. I would just always forget to buy it before and since I'm livign with my parents right now they've always got regular milk, soda, chips, and all that crap around. So, even though I bombed completely on cutting bad stuff OUT of my diet, I did add some good things TO my diet. While I was at the store today I bought some Pita bread and fresh veggies so I can take sandwiches to work with me.
I'm starting over on cutting out the crap, so right now, this is my new Day One with no soda. Hopefully I'll last longer than I did the first time....

I can't say what Isabella does, but I have started to make the same smoothie (minus the flax seeds since I already take a flax supplement). I get the frozen fruit in the bags (blueberry and whole strawberries) and just throw them whole into the blender. It's going to be part of a smoothie, so I didn't think size mattered anyways.

I am extremely proud of myself. I have been eating way better than I'm used to. It's not perfect yet, but it's better.
I haven't had soda or candy at all. My snacks have been carrot sticks and apples mostly. The sugar/candy craving is almost completely gone.
Question: My husband thinks that having the shake Isabella recommended isn't eating better at all. He says that all that fruit is just sugar anyways and it's not eating better at all. I disagree and I said I believed it was better because the fruits have natural sugar instead of refined sugars.
Am I right? Or is the shake not so great?

The sugar in fruit doesn't put you at risk for type 2 diabetes does it? That's what sparked my diet change, so i want to check.
I will say that I am starting to feel a lot healthier.

I dont like bananas either, but you cant taste them :) Potassium is good tho.
To much of anything can cause problems. So if all you ate was tons of fruit, then yeah, that might eventually lead to diabetes in the long run...but one smoothie a day will not cause any problems. It will help you in many ways.
The bigger cause of diabetes is to many carbs. Carbs are converted into sugars and that can eventually cause problems.... Well, carbs and bad sugars like soda....but no, you NEED a few servings of fruit a day. Please dont let him discourage you. You need sugar, you need fruit just as you need fats. everythign in moderation :)

My husband says the same thing about fruit. I can eat it once in awhile, but natural sugar is still sugar:-\ .

The food pyramid made by the government says we should have I believe it says 5 servings of fruit per day. I'm not even up to that yet.

^exactly. Fruit is nesessary. Everythign in moderation though.
if your like me and don't eat any fruit, then a breakfast smoothie is a good way to get in a few servings. Eat an apple with peanut butter as a snack later and your in good shape, on the fruit and protein front.
I am lerning how to sneak veggies into my diet as well, cause I dont care for veggies. Things like Spinash are very healthy for you, but I dont care for it..but you know, you cant really taste spinach hidden in things like pasta. I chop up veggies really tiny and hide it in my food :)

Unless you're cutting all sugar out of your life (which is ridiculous, since your body NEEDS sugar to function) this shouldn't be an issue. As long as fruit is REPLACING the less healthy sugars in your life (pop, candy, etc) you're making a great change in your diet by having five servings of fruit each day.

Heres a link to the new food pyramid, it has been updated. There's alot of good info in this link
You can customize your own pyramid , you enter in what yo've eaten and it tells you what you need for the day, it's pretty awesome.

I found that it is easier to gold cold turkey when quitting junk food. After a couple weeks of eating a clean diet, you will feel so much better that if you slip up, you'll feel it right away.
Gradual changes are fine, but it isn't as dramatic. I need dramatic results to stay motivated. I've given up just about all junk, and even eating something like a subway sandwich leaves me feeling icky.
I cleaned up my diet about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago. It is fast. In about 3 days you won't crave the junk as much and really start enjoying the good wholesome foods.
I agree with that. I had been doing so well with incorporating a lot more greens and fruits in my diet, cutting out sweets and sticking with baked chicken, ground turkey for my main meals.
Yesterday, I had a california burrito and now I feel like crap... I don't even want to dance today...I think once I workout I should feel a little better...:-\

Awesome! Well, not the sick part, but it's great that your body is losing its craving for the candy!
