Anything that allows the head to be pulled around is dangerous in that kind of job
From the link HHL posted: "she has custom khimar with a velcro fastener so that it breaks away if someone grabs at it."

Maybe they shouldn't be wearing button shirts then? Maybe they should investigate the possibility of a police issue Under Armor body suit so that no one could grab any flap of clothing during a scuffle.

Besides the practice is, well, stupid and medieval. IMO.
Is it really up to outsiders to determine what is and isn't stupid practices in other religions?

That is just a silly thought. The point is that officers need to be constantly on watch for ambushes with nothing in their sight path, not that they are constant in danger, but danger is just unpredictable. Further, if some strong-arm thug get hold of some headgear, it is possible that could lead to a broken neck. Those who know something about industrial safety have a leg up on those who don't.

And no, it isnt up to us to decide what a religion chooses as its practices. But we have a right to our opinions regarding its place in our complex society, and that opinion is just what this is.

So it is to not call attention to the opposite sex in a sexual manner.

I think it is a lot more than that these days.

I have met women that grew up in non religious households, that have taken 'the veil' (ie wear a scarf on their heads around men they are not related to) as a statement of their devotion to their religion, in a climate where they are being pushed ot be ashamed of it.

I know in England and Australia, and I am sure in America, since the ahem 'war on terror' bullshit began, many women wearing the religious head gear have been attacked by mobs, and beaten. For a woman to start wearing it, is to show she is not afraid and is proud of her heritage and her god. I am totally not religious and I don't really 'get' it myself. but I think people are over simplifying the whole issue, especially in todays political climate towards Muslims...

Should they be able to? yes I think so, and I think the jewish men can wear their little caps and their beards or whatever... why not?
