They used to do this at my club but not many girls would participate.....the few nights i did i got welts, broken vessels, and bruises. I stopped doing it eff that. it was the most degrading work ive ever done the way all the men laughed and actually cheered when we were struck.

^ that's exactly what it is. A public spectacle. The Blue Flame lounge is a ghetto young clientele club, and all these $30K a year millionaires want to hurt and humiliate girls like they're in a music video. It's not about any kind of healthy enjoyment for anyone. I can't believe any woman would let herself be abused and humiliated for a lousy $20. Aside from the ideological argument that it's WRONG to encourage and charge men to abuse women, it's physically impractical because you are going to be fucking SORE and possibly bruised. They want to hurt you! Why else would they sign up for it!
In my opinion it's classless and enables men to participate in misogynistic behaviors.
Very well said! I concur!

It's ATLANTA. It's all wannabe rappers who get off on abusing women, like rap tells them is cool. The OP has already stated they are hitting hard. It's institutionalized abuse for entertainment.
One club in Atlanta has what's called the "Slap A Bitch" contest, where the customers get to hit girls in the face.
I don't know how anyone could possibly be defending this.
There are videos of it, if you google it.
I'm shocked because I never encountered any of this while dancing in ATL. And I danced there for 3 and a half years.

Nope, no way never. I can just picture a group of guys laughing at me when I'm bent over in front of one of them getting smacked as hard as they can. Extremely degrading.
But I find lots of things degrading, like having to do a free topless dance once a night out on the floor.

I have no feeling what-so-ever in my ass. I'd probably do it, but get the cash up front. If the guy did just try to hit as hard as he could to hurt me I'd kick him in the shins. There's having fun for $20, and then there's getting violenct for $20. Or pushing boundries for $20. Breaking the law for $20.
But there's always going to be those guys that have to take EVERYTHING to that level. Whether its a booby kiss, lap-dance, ass-slap - they're going to do something horrid, they just can't be civilized and have a good time. They can't help it - they're abominations. But they shouldn't ruin get to ruin everything for every other customer.
End rant.

The point of the ass slapping at this club is to get a girl up onstage, and in front of the whole club, smack her on the ass as hard as you can and get cheered on by your misogynist friends. It's not in a VIP room and between two consenting adults for fun. The point of it is to hurt and degrade a woman for bragging rights. I think some of you are misunderstanding the context.
davka
10-21-2008, 01:32 PM
Well I was definitely misunderstanding the context. Shows how absolutely naive I am about some places and practices. I have never seen anything terrible like that in the clubs I've worked in. You can all understand why Viola is getting passionate about this right? When such an absolute conflation of violence and sex starts happening in the club, it could become a dangerous trend. As a woman who survived violence as a child, I could never ever experience this without feeling degraded and triggered. I also thought this was happening in private in the lap dance room and I could see how in that context, it could be sexy and endurable. Not on public display.

Yeah, I was imagining it in the context of the ass-slappers I have experienced and that would be guys just wanting to touch your ass, slap it playfully, etc. But the way Viola describes it and the city, it sounds horrendous.

Atlanta is a strange place.
I'm sure I'm going to get called a racist here soon because it takes place in a black club and I'm white. I already was in a PM. It's not like I ever said white clubs are void of abuse.
There's definitely a culture here in Atlanta that is NOT what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was shot for, not what Rosa Parks was arrested for, and not what countless civil rights activists were sprayed with fire houses and attacked by police dogs for. Atlanta is supposed to be a town where you DO NOT experience racism, whether you're black, white, or purple. It's supposed to be a place where everyone should get along and everyone can accomplish their dreams and live peacefully. But there is an undercurrent of misogyny and an obvious current of racism ALL WAYS. You cannot be white in Atlanta and say you're alarmed at the crime rate, or appalled at the state of public schools without being called racist. WTF?! I say that I disapprove of hitting women in a club, and because it takes place in a black club and I'm white, I'm racist all of a sudden.
Teenagers and young adults (black AND white AND Asian AND Hispanic AND whatever) are so influenced by the music that is popular here that tells them it is not only permissible, but applaudable to degrade women and make them your bitch and ho. So because I disapprove of any form of expression that fosters this feeling (whether it's country, rap, glam rock, whatever) but in this case it's hip hop, I'm racist. I was actually VERY surprised when I moved here that there are specifically, obviously, separate white and black clubs. White clubs can only hire a small percentage of black girls, something like 10%, and unless you have a very specific look or attitude, you cannot as a white girl make money or be hired at the black clubs. We're preserving the culture that made black and white bathrooms separate in the 50's in our strip clubs of all places?!
So I wouldn't be racist if I was like "Oh! This is delightful!"
And by the way, most of the white clubs here are skanky, too! 9 out of 10 of all strip clubs are.

i think VS is absolutely correct and justified in her opinion. Especially now that i understand the atlanta club scene a little better. there, an ass slap is not just an ass slap, but an unacceptable glorification of the rap culture and degrading to women. there is a big difference of what is being described here and an ass slap in the CR where you've been a "naughty little schoolgirl" One is about sex (or the illusion anyway) the other is about power. When i saw the title i thought it was going to be about the $20 ass slap in the back, and i was gonna vote "ok" cause i let guys spank me before after i warned them about not leaving marks, this is a whole another animal and it would be personally degrading to me to support that. they can just keep the $20.

I think it's different if playfully done in the intimacy of VIP. Done on stage as some kind of performance where people cheer you on is a totally different animal.

Misogyny didn't stem from rap music. It is sad about many of the videos and music today, but don't lay all the blame there.
Anyhow, what club has a Slap-A-Bitch contest?
I myself wouldn't participate in a $20 ass slap routine, not because I am bothered by the idea but because of drunk assholes who would want to hit hard for their macho ego. So no dice- the few bad apples out there ruined an easy way to make some quick bucks. I would rather go around getting my ass slapped than doing dances for the same amount of money. Unfortunately abusive men don't leave their antics out in the car parking lot.

Hmmmmm...I fully agree with you. Atlanta is a very strange place not only for this aspect but I will say that whenever I'd visit this town...it seemed like I was being enveloped in a sick, thick fog. Atlanta is Sodom & Gomorrah to the nth degree. Atlanta is a place where your sick perversions can be acted out and its acceptable.
Hedonism to an extent would happen in Atlanta especially back in the Freaknik days. And Atlanta is my stomping grounds for dancing.
As for the "Slap A Bitch" contest...That is so sad and sorry on so many levels. But again....black women do not get held up to the same standards as white women do. Black women are degraded at every level especially from our own communities and stars. So I can see how who ever thought of this contest could do so. Black dancers have been shitted on for so long that unfortunately it is now acceptable to tolerate such a contest.
What club is this contest at Moet or whoever knows? Is this contest at the Blue Flame too?
Now the "Slap that Ass" or whatever contest for $20, I would do. However, as far as allowing any man to reel back and swing with all his might in an attempt to dislodge my ass cheek from my body, I wouldn't accept. That type of abuse, I couldn't tolerate. That situation would turn into a scene from Mortal Combat.

Uh...I don't think anyone's suggesting that rap videos invented misogyny, so I'm not sure what your point is. It is, however, a form of music that (in the mainstream) does glorify abuse of women. So yeah, as long as their singing about pimpin the bitches and slappin the hoes, they do indeed deserve some of the blame. I can't think of any other genre or art form prevalent in today's culture that applauds controlling and abusing women as much as mainstream rap/hip hop.

Much of it encourages and glorifies the abuse of women, and the kind of guys who come to Slap A Bitch (and I imagine the $20 ass slaps) are fans of this music emulating their heroes. I think there's a pretty direct correlation.

They must've gotten that Slap a hoe contest from Hot 97's Smackfest they used to hold way back in the day. It's women vs women and men vs men though...not that it makes it ok..lol. I'm on the fence about the original question though. When it comes to the way women are portrayed in rap...I think it's a reflection of the women they come across like the groupies that degrade themselves by acting in such a "hoeish" manner. Now, of course this doesn't mean they have to write about it or generalize it, but isn't that what most of them claim to do, write about what they've seen and been through.

I think hip-hop and rap music/culture contain so much more than misogyny. Rap music has a lot of value, although I don't deny the misogyny.
I think heavy metal music can very often be quite misogynistic. Remember that song "the lap dance is better if the stripper's crying." That was a rock group. Now, no doubt there is a lot of misogyny in rap and that certainly needs to be addressed and I see that conversation happening more now than ever and black women rappers and feminists are really holding it down as far as that goes.
But we can isolate misogyny in rap music without making rap music out to be a completely misogynistic thing.
misogyny is so prevalent. people love seeing women hurt. horror movies depend on tits slashed and sexy girls getting all hacked up. These things satisfy men so much. I am right now looking up on tv to see a scene on television where a white woman is getting beaten by a white man and her moans sound more like pleasure than pain to me. This is everywhere. Not just in rap music. It's everywhere and it's fucking scary as hell.

Not all the guys are trying to hurt you some just wanna smack some ass other yeah they try to hit you hard as hell. You dont have to participate if you don't want to there was girls who didn't do.
I think that Babes or Onyx has a bitch slap contest. I always thought it was two chicks slappin the hell out of each other not a guy slappin you. Hell no I wouldn't participate in it.
Clubs in Atlanta do all kinda stupid contests to attract customers.
I just heard on the radio that Pin Ups are doing a pillow fight on Tues nights now. We all know that is not what we think it is.

My ass gets slapped all the time for a lot less up here in NY. I think part of the reason why I don't feel degraded is that I have fun with it too. 1st off: I have a big ass, why not smack it a little? Half of the fun is watching the guys get all excited and what not, and then their excitement when they see that I can take a good ass slap. Then other girls come over to join in and the guys tip her to slap my ass, me to slap hers, blah blah blah.
It's not degrading if you're able to have fun with it. But that kind of fun isn't for some people. As long as I'm always in control. I can look at a group of guys and tell which one is gonna be the vicious ass slapper vs. the playful ass slapper.
Now, that whole Slap-A-Bitch nonsense...? Yea, I dare you to slap this bitch, watch her pull out a .38. My face is a whole other story. That's serious. My ass is for fun.

Exactly. I don't think it's about abuse as some in this thread claim. It's about fun. It's not degrading. At my old club we did a "Pussy Tip Toss" where a girl would sit on stage, open her legs and guys would try to shoot balled up dollar bills in a shot glass placed in her crotch. The first three guys to get it in got a free shot of liquor. It was fun and a lot of guys participated so the girl on stage made good money. Some might think getting balled up dollars thrown at you (and some hitting you in the head) is degrading but it was in the spirit of fun, like the $20 ass slaps. For the record, when another dancer slapped my ass (on stage, in the dressing room, on the floor) they did it way harder than any customer ever did. Most customers (even the ones who *gasp!* listen to rap music) aren't misogynists and aren't out to just hurt women.
But seriously, is there a club in ATL where men pay to slap the shit out of the strippers (in the face) or is someone confusing the radio contest? That just sounds crazy to me.

What!? Customers slap strippers? Now THAT'S degrading. I wouldn't even do it with another girl because if someone hits me in the face...well we're going to fight. And by fight I mean someone will have to go the hospital to remove various shoes and other objects from their assholes in addition to getting some serious plastic surgery to repair stomping damage done to their head and face. I'm not normally a violent person but I don't play around when it comes to face hits AT ALL.

I would hold my thong open too and tell them to put the money in my bank which they did with glee. In fact, if I just held out my garter I only got a couple of bucks but once I held out my thong they tipped a hell of a lot more. It's funner for them than just handing over a dollar I guess.

To each their own. In the past when customers have balled up dollars and thrown them at me (with the intent to hit me in the head or crotch) I've been pissed off and found it rude.

Agreed. "Making it rain" is different, because the bills are open and flutter down, instead of hitting you. I've always been confused about the loonie and toonie shows in Canada, too. Sure, you can make a lot of money, but what about the assholes who hit you with the coins on purpose?

Is this done nude?

No, we had on thongs. It is rude when a guy balls up a dollar and throws it at a girl on stage but if it's part of a game then it's ok with me. It's all about context. At the clubs I've worked at, the money is made on stage. I could go for days without doing dances and I still made really good money. I like the performing more than the lap dancing.

I balled up money to throw on the stage because I couldn't get to the stage but I never was trying to hit anyone in the head or the crotch.
