View Full Version : Does Trya Bank's Portrayal of women in the sex industry bother anyone else?

^^^ Not much point in that... Trya would just find some way just to cut to commercials every time another smart woman tried to speak up on this.

Just speculating of course but maybe she has a personal vendetta against strippers because...
a) one of her boyfriends had some fun at a strip club, maybe too much fun for her liking
b) strippers are more in control of their life/earnings than any of her show's 'top' models
c) she suffers from low self-esteem so has to 'boost' herself whenever possible (I mean what is going on with her weight?! Just goes to show she had to starve herself in her prime modeling days)
d) all of the above

***Tyra is having another show on the adult industry. It should air today, April 14th so check it out..
"Strippers, porn stars, escorts, prostitutes-- Are they all the same?" A whats the difference and which is "worse" type of thing... It's going to be interesting!
Honestly, I don't like her treatment towards us, of course I find it insulting and ridiculous. However, I do like to watch her show. How serious she acts about the whole thing makes me laugh. She is SO against us (even though as we all see, she came from selling her body too, just in a different way). I do like seeing different sides of everything, so I like hearing how she/others think about the business, even if I find them judgemental.
We know what we know about our jobs and we can't change others' opinions. All we can do is try to do our best to show people by being good people and that we aren't all just a stereotype.
And as I've read on this site before, it is best that they fear the industry, just means more $$$$ for us!

I haven't been interested in Tyra Bank's talk show since the day she did a segment on stripping and paid a visit to a strip club but backed out of going on stage for her own reasons. Since then, I've viewed her as nothing but a hypocrite. During her modeling days there were numerous times she was in the minds of men whenever she appeared in magazines or fashion shows in scantly clad outfits. Especially for Victoria's Secret. She whined about strippers being in the minds of men yet, she bared quite a lot of skin herself. Strippers entertain for money from men; models pose in skimpy outfits for money which men pay to view. Tyra needs to learn to think before she speaks or just keep her mouth shut. And while I'm at it, Tyra needs to do a segment on how to cover up her big forehead. Something she of all people should know plenty about.

Awesome points. The line between the sex industry and the mainstream modeling industry is a lot blurrier than Tyra likes to think.

It is so annoying that she always chooses women who are unable to articulate why they feel like it is ok to do what they do whether it's dancing or otherwise....then she makes them seem like pitiful voctims of low self esteem. Ok, so her mom chose to struggle and work a million jobs to support here and her brother. That's cool but some mom'schoose to work 3 nights and be there for every teacher visit, field trip, help with homework, andbethere when the kids get home from school...oh, and be able to pay for classes, good schools, etc....errrrgh And some women just choose to dance, domme, whatever because they want to. So, speaking to the choir I know but it's really irking me.
I entirely agree...For this reason and many many more, I do not watch or own a tv (extreme I know).. television is stock full of idiocies and marketing schemes that brainwash the masses or piss of the smart ones. But yes, Tyra Banks production crew must be doing a fine job at searching for the low-IQ types of "stripper"...it would be delicious to see one of our savvy, articulate counterparts go on her show and let her look like an ass!}:D

Sasha Grey was on Tyra and Tyra was obviously PISSED that she couldnt shake her up and that she kept saying that she was in this industry by choice. Its kind of funny!
This episode was awesome. Sasha is amazing. She is young, so articulate and a great example for the adult industry.
You should check out Sasha's response to the show on youtube. Apparently before the show, the wardrobe people were instructed to not let Sasha wear what she was wearing and to dress her so she looked younger. They also cut out a lot of Sasha's response so that it looked like she was just listening to Tyra.
Tyra annoys me. She also goes on about how she's about womens rights.. when really she condemns women for making their own choices. What the hell, Tyrant?!

"This topic is usually something that was always discussed behind closed doors or just pushed aside!! People remember, these woman have feelings! Stop judging them. We will never know the reason for them selling their bodies!! They maybe have a family to look after etc. A lot of girls also do this because of something deeper - undealt issues in their life!! I'm not saying that these "jobs" are right, coz it is not!! But just don't judge them! Sometimes these people just needs someone to reach out and truly ask how they are doing - they need to feel that someone really cares and that they are not just recieving attention because somethng is wanted of them!! Everyone just wants to feel wanted and for these woman this is their way. Their way of dealing with their self -esteem issues or whatever!! And them batteling over the title or role, it lets them think that they actually achieved something, even if it is not OK in the eyes of others! Remember the old saying : "Don't judge a book by it's cover". These girls need help, so if you can't help them would you atleast not hurt them!!! "
-----------------well, at least she's telling tyra not to insult us. even if it's because we're emotionally scarred, damaged individuals and this is just our lot in life.
"If you've ever been told or given the advice don't date a guy unless he can do for you or take care of you you are on the verge of being a prostitute. If you tell your daughter to look for a husband who can support her finacially you are basically a prostitute. Willing to give sex and time in exchange for compensation. If you require dinner and a movie on a date before you will lie down you are a stupid cheap prostitute. If you are sleeping with a guy and you can't pay your bills or your baby is in need or you are you need to be a prostitute and stop being so dumb giving it away for free."
-----------------i loved that one
"You know darn well that you didn't make 265,000 stripping, so give me a break. The average stripper is broke. There's that few percent that are very successful at the game. Stripping is for women that can find no other option to getting a paycheck. I'm not against them, but that's what it is. There are many options. It's sad that at 18 that was the only way you knew how to earn an income. I'm not insulting, but it's just sad to me. When I was your age, I went to college. Financial Aid is available for students trying to better themselves. Today, I'm a RN and I'm so proud of it. As women, let's stop limiting ourselves."

No, actually she's not a great example. She's made a fool of herself in front of multiple cameras before. Just because she can speak well in front of her own youtube camera doesn't mean she is articulate. Articulate people know how to speak well in front of just about anyone. She claims that Tyra edited a lot of what you said. Sasha has a bad attitude, but she's also very meek and anyone worth half their weight in words or attitude could easily make her look like a child... which is exactly what Tyra did. Sasha should have never been allowed on that show. No one should have gone on that show really, but if someone is going to it really ought to have been someone with a much stronger personality like Nina Hartley, Jenna Jameson, or even Jesse Jane. I would have LOVED to see Nina on that show... she would have really put Tyra in her place and she is articulate.
I have a pretty high patience level, but as an adult if she knew that they were trying to make her look like a child... why did she not walk out? Personally, that's what I would have done. Chances are that she was contracted through the production company rather than directly as a publicity stunt. She could have called the company and told them what was going on, left and let them deal with it. If a few people did that to Tyra she wouldn't get away with trying to twist things the way that she does. Plus, most companies would rather their people leave than be made a fool on national tv which makes them lose money. If Sasha booked that on her own and was too naive to leave then she got exactly what she deserved. It's just too bad that all the other young starlets with have to reap what was sowed from that episode.
Tyra really needs to have a reality check, but that isn't going to come from someone who is meek and rather new to th industry... it's much more likely to come from someone who has been around the block and is a seasoned veteran. Maybe Sasha will get there, but it's going to take awhile for her to be molded into that.

^ I hear what you're saying for sure. I think Sasha went on her show to (as she said) "broaden" her audience. Anyone watching the Tyra show would then go research Sasha, and perhaps a few of them would buy her videos, et cetera.
If she were going on the show to truly try and break stereotypes, she would've left it the second the producers changed her clothing. She also would've researched speaking in sound bytes and whatnot..
However, I do think she stayed very composed (considering the circumstances) and was a much better representation for the sex industry than many other people who have appeared on the show.

i'd say she is jealous that she probably had to work her ass off to find jobs before she became well known and when she did find jobs she got paid near to nothing and is one of those people that probably would want to strip but doesnt have the balls (maybe she thought about it during her time before her fame) and she just didnt have the balls to take her clothes off and dance or her parents didnt approve so instead of being the bigger person and saying "i did want to dance but i could never get the courage to do it" she is sitting around bashing dancers. I know a lot of girls that do this exact thing. they say "strippers are sluts or wahtever" but if they got the chance to dance and could get the balls to go up there they would do it in a minute. its jealousy i think.

i just watched that episode and that chick that works at the bunny ranch was talking shit about how she gets a bad rap because of escorts and illegal porstitutes. which didnt make much sense because the bunny ranch is the most well known legal prostitution deal in the country, she gets her rap from THE SHIT SHE DOES EVERYDAY. illegal prostitutes do teh same thing she does they just dont get tested and they arent legal which i understand is a huge deal, but its the same work if you are just comparing the work.

It is the same work, but it's approached differently. A lot of prostitutes have a bad rap because of how they handle business AND the fact that it's illegal in most places. There's things though like stripping that are legal, but people think of them differently. Like bachelorettes that freak out about their husbands to be having a private party with a stripper... they are afraid the dancer is going to have sex with him or do other intimate things that they don't worry so much about with dancers at the club. It's the same thing, but people think of them differently because of the way they run their business. If more prostitutes were working in formal brothels, using protection, and getting tested regularly there's a better chance that people would be willing to legalize it. The thing is though that many prostitutes don't want to deal with all of that... therefore it's going to continue being illegal in most places and people are going to see prostitution all the same even though it's not.

My view on strippers/stripping changed completely after my first week...
Before I started working I thought it was just easy $ but its not at all. There's an art to convincing customers to buy you drinks and dances, an art to dancing on stage and making money... you have to have a technique and and develop a style, be confident and intelligent enough that guys will want to keep coming back and not just buy one dance. it's not about being a whore or being slutty its about being a really good businesswoman ;)
If you can get a guy to drop $400 for twenty minutes of your time and a few dances, that's a skill. strippers have to earn their money they dont get whatever an hour just for showing up... tyra can suck it.

i totally agree. stripping is definitely WORK, and you can make a lot of money but you definitely earn it. being attractive is part of it, but you also have to be socially adept enough to not only engage the customers in conversation but to always be closing the deal. it's a sales job, and it takes skill.
like you guys have said, tyra - all models, especially vs/sports illustrated/etc models - are selling their bodies just like strippers. hell, i got hired as a waitress because i met a restaurant manager who liked how i look, and when i showed up for my first day in a nice black dress, he told me to wear something "sexier" the next time. if you're a woman, there are a lot of jobs in which you're selling your body. maybe it's subtle, and maybe it's not. what makes stripping different from other jobs is you're not tiptoeing around it.
last thing: i'm on an upcoming episode of the tyra show (that has to do with different sexual fetishes/practices), and the experience of filming it was that she's extremely narrow-minded and judgmental of anyone who's sex-positive. i know it has a lot to do with the image she's trying to maintain, but i feel a little sorry for her because she gives the impression of being a pretty repressed person.

I get your point but its not just tyra's opinion.. she goes out of her way to edit her show/interviews to try and make her opinion a fact. Like when that porn star went on her show she had to wear clothes the show gave her that made her look younger and she said she loves her job but the show was edited to make it look like she was a victim. Tyra is a wannabe Oprah, but lacks the brain and class that Oprah has. She just cuts clips to portray her opinion. She's a dumbass that will lose fame when her body withers. Tyra needs to take a lesson from the smart dancers and get an education, we know what's up.

Everything Tyra does screams "RATINGS!!!" to me. In ANTM she's never around for her models until something has happened, then she's all "Aw look how I am here for them when they need me! Aren't I sweet and caring!" The crap listed in this thread is the reason Janice left the show, she even has a small interview about it, about how Tyra edits out anything that doesn't match her point of view or the direction she wants her show to go.
I used to hate Janice but at least she doesn't tiptoe around the fact that she's selling her body and that she enhances her body in order to do it.

I find her show boring as hell.
The show starts with her appearing in the audience yelling and plain old being loud about some shit that isn't even funny or ammusing.
The show caters to a bunch of mindless, oppinionless 18-34 year olds who agree with everything they are told. Just watching the show makes me feel like an idiot.

I was a fan of hers BEFORE I saw the Tyra show. I loved her in Americas next top Model but the Tyra show ruined her for me. Here are some tidbits that came from her mouth about herself that will give you a glimpse of who she is:
*Shes from LA, left when she was 18?
*She was always made fun of in school because she was a skin and bones black chick which is the equivalent of being a heavy set white chick lol.
*Ever since she left LA her life has been about being a supermodel
This woman basically only has a high school education and the only thing she specializes in is the modeling/high fashion thing. Thats her life expierience. She seems like the LAST person a TV network would pick for a talk show, I mean what does this women know about anything?
How can Americans (no matter how dumb or smart they are) relate to her?

The most infuriating example was when she went "undercover" at a NYC topless bar. When it was time to go on stage, she totally chickened out and said she couldn't do it. Bullshit coming from a lingerie model. The only difference is that there would be no paycheck for tens of thousands of dollars when she was done. It was the lamest "expose" attempt.
