^^^ I think that's a great idea. I'm a kid at heart, so I wouldn't mind taking time off to be a stay-at-home dad... I'd be great at taking the kids hiking, kayaking, kite-flying, etc.,... but I wouldn't be so good in the kitchen or the laundry room (I know how to put clothes in the machine and press a button, but I can't fold the clothes right after they're done).
I do see two practical problems, though: (1) people still assume that if the guy is at home while the wife works, he is a PL scum who can't hold a job, and (2) potential employers may be a little reluctant to hire a professional that's been deliberately "out of work" for a year or more. (This is specially true in the medical and legal fields and other technical fields where a lot of development occurs in one year, and you can be left behind by taking a year off.)
Self-employed people, obviously, have the greatest flexibility to do this.
