I love this thread! Sad as it is, I LOVE Walmart for the simple fact that when I go there, it always boosts my self-esteem! If I'm having a fat/fugly day where I feel horrible, I just pop over to Walmart and suddenly, I'm the most slender, beautiful person there! It's so bad, lol.

LA only has one Walmart though, so I haven't gotten to do much Walmart ego-boosting lately. :(

Anyways...

Let me add: and

It is quite possible that they could not even afford JC Penny. Furthermore, it is possible that they got the clothes from a church or some charity. You do not have many options when you are picking clothes from a charity.

I think it is unfortunate that some of us find other people's misery amusing.

When I was a teenager, I lived in foster homes and state sponsored half way homes. All of my clothing came from donation shelters and Goodwills and yet I didn't wear anywhere NEAR the shit that those "People of Walmart" are wearing. In fact, to this day, I wear Goodwill clothing, "recycled" clothes and I've even gone dumpster diving and gotten some killer clothes that way as well. I know you don't know me, and me saying I have killer style isn't really verifyiable, but I will just say it anyways. I've always been well dressed, I've always gotten compliments for my unique, interesting killer style, so to say that making fun of poorly dressed people means we are being mean towards "poor" people is just fucking ridiculous!

In fact, I've known many very wealthy people who couldn't dress themselves out of a paper sack and who look eerily similar to these "People of Walmart". Quentin Tarantino is one that comes to mind. The point is, no amount of money will buy you fashion sense and no lack of funds will prevent a stylish person from being well dressed. IT's that simple.

As far as finding "other people's misery" amusing--I think not. It's you who's bigoted to think that those people are "miserable" To me, they look pretty happy in their fugly clothes, shopping at Walmart. Who are you to assume that they lead unhappy lives? And in that vein, who are you to assume they are poor? I shop at Walmart and I make around $5-10 grand a month.

So maybe you need to be more open minded AND less of a shitstarter. Can you please work on that?

You know, I've never quite understood why its so but there seems to be two ways of trying to be a little taller in this world.

Dude, we are not making fun of poor people.

No. The fun is being made of people's tastes, because after all the folks here are so much better and smarter and thus have much better taste than those unfortunate folks who haven't got a clue.

After all, I know that because I own three tuxedos and a couple of dinner jackets because I have the need to attend the occasional formal function with the odd congress person, senator or two, thus I am truly better than that fellow with the wolf denim shirt.

::)

The more I learn the more I am sure that I'm not better than anyone else, just different in some ways then they.

It amazes me that those "Walmart shopping, God fearing, gun toting, types" get diminished by those with "better" educations and fashion sense because they are viewed as being small minded and thus limited in their view and scope of the world. Yet it is frequently those of "better breeding" I find making comments that sound petty and small in their condescension of those they feel, for what ever reason, are beneath them.

The Blue state/Red state disconnect is becoming palpable around here. [Mind you, that is a socially left leaning independent saying that - not a tea bagger]

Ive been doing very well dancing lately and I've taken a second job selling online advertising to bands, so I'm working from noon til 5 in the valley doing that then I drive directly to my club, get there at 6 and work til close (2-4am depending). I do this 5 times a week & when I'm not doing that, I just go to work at the club. I make money, but I do work damn hard for it!

**Edit: I get an hourly wage selling adverts but I also get commission so I get to use my selling skills and it's actually helping me make $$ at my real world job. I've only worked there for a month and I'm already making more sales than any other employee. My boss used to be a stripper too and she hired me on the spot when I told her that cuz she "knew I'd sell well", lol. I'm supposed to have a minimum 4 year degree but I guess fellow strippers understand that means shit when it comes right down to it.**

...GR, those are your standards on the topic you measure yourself by. Others have their own standards on the topic (which can be the same, similar or vastly different) and put them equal or higher than you. People sometimes even laugh at themselves over their limitations. Would you really condemn(devalue, scold, whatever) every person or comedian for every joke at the expense of others (particularly when the others dont know about it)? Seems like the courts have already ruled on that one since leno and letterman are raking in the money off of it.

I've seen the website and I think it's incredibly funny. Now that I've said that, here's two observations. Apparently WalMart is concerned about it's image as it is portrayed on that website. If you take a look at their commercials, they are now all geared towards mid to upper middle-class "traditional" families essentially offering "the good life for less" at WalMart. So I would conclude that sites like this actually bother them. The other observation is that my youngest son graduated college with a 2-year culinary degree, and he's a baker at a WalMart store. Based on what sort of jobs he could get, they pay him reasonably well, his bennies, while not fabulous, are adequate, and he's comfortable working there.

Wow...good for you! I've done sales before and hated it. But I was selling a product/service(ad sales for a magazine that sucked and in fact folded after I left, and event sales for a prominent business paper that also folded that branch after I left) that I didnt really believe in and that makes ALL the difference. My sales were good (I in fact outsold at the paper from the previous year when 10 people were doing the job I did alone!), but my heart wasnt in it. I can sell like crazy when its something Im passionate about though...which is why I have high hopes for my non-profit when I get it up and running.

Dude, lighten up. You're reading way too much into this. I know I've made some fashion faux pas in my day and I'm sure more than one person got a chuckle over it. We've all been the butt of a joke and it's really not a great tragedy.

Very well said. There are some people who have no achievement of their own. They constantly seek out unfortunate people to make themselves feel better.

There is a long standing comedic rule of thumb that it is OK to make fun of your own but not near as smart, or cool, to do so of other groups as it comes across as hateful, not funny. [Don Rickles being an exception to that rule :) ] Even Leno and Letterman are careful not to take it too far, or if they do find some way to pull it back immediately after. After all, their sponsors depend on the spending habits of those folks as much as anyone else.

People who make their living being funny are usually pretty smart about it. I figure they have a good reason for having that rule of thumb.

Its a fine line but it exists.

One is defining a behavior, the other the persons themselves.

Example: "Walmart people are tasteless.", as opposed to. "Calling Walmart people tasteless just because they shop at Walmart is what is actually tasteless."

I'm not attempting to define people, but a given behavior, as tasteless. The people may, or may not, be just ducky. I don't know them so I couldn't say either way. Its the observed behavior that appears rude.

I'm light hearted and funny. I just don't usually do it at someone else's expense. Well, at least not at those who can't readily hit back anyway. :)

wishing well......objection non responsive.:D GR, ya know thats not true. "Jay Walking" clearly makes fun of other people right in front of them on the sidewalk. Unlike the walmart website where no one knows they were peg'd. They make fun of other groups all the time. Not sure about how this "pull back" theory works in real life.

So, what is wrong with the goats? Can you elaborate further?

Cyril is in a small town in norther ireland.....walks into a pub sits next to a guy.

Guy: "Ello friend, let me buy you a pint. I am Seamus, What do they call you?"

Cyril: "You see over that hill, there are 40 houses....i built each and every one of those houses......but do they call me 'Cyril The Housebuilder'?.......NO!"

"In each of those houses there are about 15 cabinets, i built every last one of them with my bare hands...as well as thousands of other cabinets across this countryside....but do they call me 'Cyril The Cabinetmaker'?........NO!"

"I have worked 30 years as a roofer, I have put roofs on over 500 houses..the finest craftsman in the land....but do they call me 'Cyril The Roofer'?...................NO!

....but you fuck ONE goat!.............."
